Video Summary
AI GeneratedAn adult humpback whale was recently spotted in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta near Rio Vista after entering San Francisco Bay. While aerial searches by a helicopter have not yet relocated the animal, experts are monitoring the situation to ensure the \"wayward\" whale finds its way back to the ocean.
He's here. Three whale launch. We have some new video from a viewer to show
you right now. This is a whale spotted in the delta. Denny Glover says he
spotted this will in the Sacramento River just south of the Rio Vista
Bridge while he was fishing yesterday. Thank you, Denny, for sending this to
us. The Marine Mammal Center tells us this is an adult humpback whale that
entered San Francisco Bay earlier this week, has continued traveling east
through the bay and into the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta near Rio Vista. And
you can see it's just cruising along. And so we're cruising the skies right
now on KCR three whale watch from live copter three right over the delta.
We're looking for that whale. We've been zooming in. We saw a couple
shadowy spots that I know our photographer in the sky is seen and we
zoom in and we haven't been able to spot the wheel today. No sightings of
the whale have happened today. Yesterday was the last known recorded
sighting, but we are flying over the water and we are looking. So here's the
thing with this. These whales, uh, they're not supposed to be in the
delta. Uh, they well, let's tell you about this case first and then we'll
talk about that. We'll go back to live copter three. Uh, in May of 2000 and
seven, a pair of whales named Delta and Don swam roughly 90 miles up the
Sacramento River and they were stranded for 17 days before both the mother and
the calf. They made it out again. And then people have been around since the
eighties. Remember Humphrey? Yeah, the whale known as Humphrey. The whale
spent several weeks in the Rio Vista area before returning through the bay
to the ocean. So let's go back out to these live pictures from live copter
three. The whales, they consider them wayward. They're not supposed to be in
the delta. Sometimes they chase food, they get into the bay and they get
their bearings off and end up going up the delta. And so we have watched these
situations. We've watched boats try to get them turn around and going the
right direction. We've seen these whales make it all the way up through
the delta, making all the way to Sacramento and that's where they hit a
roadblock. There isn't much you could do. So it becomes worrisome because the
food supply starts dwindling as they get up and the goal is to get them back
out into the ocean. Also, I think they kind of start losing their sense of
direction, almost like, you know, uh, when, you know, for a pilot were to were
to lose their sense of up and down. I think it's kind of the same sort of
thing possibly, but we are on whale watch right now and we're looking for
that, that hump back. Maybe it already found its way back. Let's hope, let's
sure. And no one's seen the whale today. So maybe it's already on the
way out and not turned around. Didn't take that. Maybe I bet you was google
maps, not apple maps. That's all I'm going to say about that. Hopefully not
map quest. Maybe my map quest, there
