At EMO 2019, Makino showcases its latest advancements in digitalization, Industry 4.0, and support for emerging sectors like electric vehicles. The presentation highlights high-precision 5-axis machining centers and collaborative robotics designed to assist operators, emphasizing a future where automation enhances human skill and enables localized, high-value manufacturing.
Hey, what's up everybody? This is Titan, Titans of CNC.
And I'm in the Makino booth with my man Endo. How are you, Endo?
Doing well. Pleasure meeting you and thank you very much for coming over to our booth.
Awesome. Thank you for having us.
Anytime.
So, Endo, this booth is absolutely amazing.
Thank you very much.
So, technology is on display here at EMO 2019.
What is the theme that you guys have in this booth?
We have two themes on this one.
And one is for the digitalization.
So, the industrial 4.0, the IoT connection.
And also, the other side is the new technology that is coming to the industry, like the EVs and all that.
So, we are trying to look for a solution that we can support our customer on those kind of needs.
Oh, that's awesome.
So, you guys got massive machines.
You guys are big in aerospace and pretty much in every industry.
And now you're coming back with the technology and it's on display in a huge way right here at EMO.
That's correct.
And Titan, not just talking, but I can show you around and see the actual machine.
I think that will be much more interesting than just talking.
Oh, I'm excited. Let's do this.
All right, let's go.
Okay, Titan, this is one of our latest 5-axis machining center.
It is called the A500Z.
And it's one of our popular A51NX, which is our 4th axis machining center.
And we now have a very unique 5-axis component on it.
And we made it as a 5-axis machining center.
It will cut very good and it has a very quick motion and good repeatability and accuracy.
So, we'll be showing some demo.
And one of the demo that we'll be showing is a ductile iron.
And we'll be using a 125-millimeter face mill to face mill the part.
And after that, we'll have a Ketametal 85-diameter drilling for that cycle.
Man, this thing is fast.
It is. Yes, thank you.
Absolutely incredible.
So, Titan, there's another new vertical 5-axis machining center.
So, this is another 5-axis machining center.
And it is a very quick motion.
So, I would like you to see rather than me talking.
But the C-axis is 120 RPM.
It's a very quick motion.
So, this robot that Makino has built, it's called the iAssist.
And this is more assisting the operator.
And as you can see, if you come in close, it will not try to hit you.
And it will try to understand where we are at and try to move in a different zone.
So, this tool will be supporting the operator to change tool.
And it can also do some pre-setting on the tool side as well.
Yeah, production.
And based on that production order,
this iAssist has been getting an order of which tool needs to get picked up
and which tool needs to get delivered into the machine.
So, you see like this collaborative robots and even your vehicle.
That's just the future now.
It allows the operator or machinist to actually work on like that.
That's exactly correct.
I think the automation has to help the human.
And human should not be doing something prepping for the automation to happen.
So, one of the important factors is to have the people, skilled people,
to do something more skillful or something more complicated or something more creative.
And let these robots to support us from the manufacturing point of view.
So, you guys have a lot of robots at Makino?
Yes, especially from some of our machining site.
We do have robots like FANUC robots, vision sensors, and things like that.
But, yes.
So, machining point of view, we do have many automation including the pallet handling system.
And we actually have a huge 1.5 ton FANUC robot actually picking up parts
and mini robot kind of planting all that.
Amazing.
So, I think our next step is to bring this technology into our assembly side.
Assembly is another very key factor which is very difficult to automate
because you have to have your know-how and the skill to make a very accurate machine.
Are you excited about the future of this industry?
And, again, I think we are seeing more of the technology being more advanced.
And, obviously, 5-axis, one simple thing that we can talk about,
that the coming future to allow one chucking and five-sided machining
or continuous 5-axis machining.
So, definitely, I think we are seeing more future and more needs about different kinematics.
But, again, I think the most important part is if you have parts in,
parts completely out is, I think, the future.
Completely out without having to just keep flipping and putting all that work in.
Right.
I think we are making that step one by one to the future.
It's funny.
A lot of people look at automation and they think, and it's something I say all the time,
people are always like, oh, it's killing jobs, it's killing jobs.
And I'm like, you know what?
All these jobs are gone.
You've already lost so many of these jobs.
Automation is going to allow people to stay where the parts originated.
You know what I mean?
So, you can actually make the parts in Detroit through automation.
You just don't have 100 employees.
You got 30.
But they're well-paid guys, right?
You can make parts in Japan.
You can make parts in Australia.
No matter where you're at, you can actually make them where you're at because of automation.
So, don't be scared of that.
Embrace it and learn it because those are good-paying jobs.
And our kids, they get to make space vehicles.
And they get to worry about just taking us into the future.
It's an exciting time.
Endo, thank you so much for your time.
Thank you very much.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Thank you very much for your time.
Amazing.
I'm honored.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
