Heavy Machines Flow

Australia’s road trains are already among the biggest trucks on Earth — but some were engineered with truly extraordinary amounts of power. In this video, we count down Australia’s 10 most powerful road trains, starting with legendary 500HP highway machines and working our way toward extreme twin-engine mining combinations claimed to produce more than 1,500 horsepower.

We begin with Australian trucking legends such as the Mack Super-Liner E9 V8, before moving through machines including the Western Star 6900, Kenworth T909, Mack Titan, Scania V8 and Volvo FH16. These trucks show just how far production road-train power has evolved, from the famous rumbling Mack V8 to modern European engines producing around 770–780HP.

But the really extreme machines appear when we leave Australia's public highways and enter the world of private mining haul roads. The video explores specialized Kenworth C509 and C510 road trains, enormous multi-trailer combinations and powered trailers that carry their own engines. Instead of relying entirely on the prime mover, these systems can use a second engine farther back in the road train to push the load and maintain momentum.

At the very top are the legendary twin-engine Australian mega road trains associated with Jim Cooper and Co-Ord transport operations. Historical operator accounts have linked some of these extraordinary systems with outputs approaching 1,500 horsepower, including one reported — though independently unverified — configuration at 1,520HP. These machines represent some of the most extreme heavy-haul engineering ever attempted in the Australian outback.

From triple and quad road trains crossing the desert to six-trailer mining combinations hauling ore through remote Australia, this countdown isn't only about horsepower. Cooling, traction, gearing, axle loads, weight distribution and the ability to keep hundreds of tonnes moving through brutal outback conditions can matter just as much as the number printed on an engine specification sheet.

Which Australian road train do you think deserves the number one spot? And which engine would you trust with a fully loaded road train in the middle of the outback?
