Why Americans Are Falling Behind, Even With Two Jobs

Fountain Lights Career Hub

The American Dream is increasingly unattainable on a single income. In the mid-20th century, one middle-class salary was often sufficient to cover housing, healthcare, education, and savings. Today, however, wages have not kept pace with the rising costs of essential goods.

Housing, childcare, healthcare, and education have increased dramatically, while stable jobs with benefits have declined. Union coverage has weakened, precarious work has expanded, and savings have become harder to maintain.

As a result, most households now rely on two incomes simply to meet basic expenses. In the current economic context, work alone no longer guarantees financial stability.
