The B-21 Is Coming, So Why Is the US Spending $21 BILLION on a NEW B-52 Upgrade?

The U.S. Air Force is spending $21 billion to modernize a bomber built during
the Kennedy administration, and ten of the thirteen programs are already
behind on cost, schedule, or performance.
At the same time it is paying Northrop Grumman to build the B-21 Raider
faster. Here is why it refuses to choose.
A July 2026 Government Accountability Office report put the total B-52
modernization bill at roughly $21 billion across 13 separate programs. The
Commercial Engine Replacement Program alone now exceeds $15 billion, up more
than 38 percent. The Radar Modernization Program triggered a Nunn-McCurdy
breach and the Air Force gave up five performance requirements to keep it
alive. What America gets in return is 75 airframes, roughly 70,000 pounds of
ordnance, and, in the right configuration, up to 20 precision weapons per
aircraft.
