Jeanne Calment Family Timeline (1875–1997) | The Oldest Person Ever
Jeanne Calment lived longer than any other fully authenticated person in recorded history - an extraordinary 122 years and 164 days. Born in Arles, France, on February 21, 1875, she lived through two World Wars, the rise of automobiles, aviation, cinema, television and more than a century of human history before her death on August 4, 1997. Guinness World Records continues to recognize her as the oldest person ever.
But Jeanne’s incredible longevity also came with profound personal loss. She married her distant cousin Fernand Nicolas Calment in 1896 and gave birth to their only daughter, Yvonne Marie Nicolle Calment, in 1898. Yvonne died at only 36 years old, while Fernand died in 1942 at the age of 73. Jeanne also outlived her only grandson, Frédéric, who died in a car crash at 37, as well as her son-in-law. By the later decades of her life, nearly every member of her immediate family was gone.
This family timeline follows Jeanne from her childhood in 19th-century Arles through marriage, motherhood, devastating family losses, extraordinary longevity and worldwide fame. She continued riding a bicycle until around age 100, lived independently until 110, became the world’s oldest living person in 1988, and later became the oldest person ever verified. At 114, she even appeared as herself in Vincent et moi, earning another Guinness record as the oldest actress. Her unprecedented lifespan remains unmatched.
