Jansson Stegner’s figurative paintings stretch the limits of realism with hyperbolic distortions that critique gender norms and the social and cultural conventions of sexuality and beauty. The women in Stegner’s paintings, such as the bicep-flexing figure in TBT (2018), are sporty giants, while the tiny-footed fellow in Fireplace (2018) demonstrates how men are pictured as lithe and impossibly elongated. While the artist admired the simplifications and exaggerations found in comic books when he was younger, he now looks to canonical artists that had an elastic approach to figurative realism such as Egon Schiele and Alice Neel, and Mannerist painters such as El Greco. Stegner completed his MFA at the University at Albany, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions since 2002. He has had solo shows at Almine Rech Gallery in New York City and Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels.
