The Story of London's Lost Fleet River

Beneath Farringdon Road, a river is still flowing. The Fleet, once one of the most important waterways in Britain, ran through the heart of London for two thousand years before the Victorians sealed it inside brick tunnels and erased it from the surface. It served as a Roman harbour, a medieval sewer, a failed Venetian canal, and a ticking bomb that literally exploded through the streets in eighteen forty-six. It has never stopped flowing. The city simply decided to bury it alive.
