John Deere Tractor Gets Split In Half. Can We Find The Problem Inside??

Apparently, the proper way to replace a clutch in a John Deere tractor is to split the entire thing in half. Seems reasonable.

Mechanic Tim had a tractor with a failed clutch that needed to come apart, and instead of doing it the normal way, we decided this sounded like the perfect first real test for my knuckle boom crane.

Neither of us had ever used a crane to split a tractor before, which meant Tim got to trust me with several thousand pounds of John Deere while I got some much-needed practice on the controls. What could possibly go wrong?

Of course, there may have been an ulterior motive here. Tim is the same guy who recently helped me tap into and modify the ridiculously complicated hydraulic system on this crane truck. So was I really bringing the crane over to make his job easier… or did I just conveniently arrange the crane’s first real workout while the guy responsible for modifying the hydraulics was standing five feet away and available for immediate warranty service?

Either way, we had a tractor to split, a failed clutch to get out, and a crane operator who was about to find out just how smooth he could actually be on the controls.

Time to split a John Deere in half.
