This Painting Is Weirder Than It Looks. Here's Why.

This painting is American Gothic by Grant Wood, and while it's one of America's first iconic portraits, it's also, well...a little "different" as they'd say in the Midwest. While European portraiture historically favored royalty, this was a new kind of portrait. Plain. Simple. Of farmers. And where is she looking? And some people (in the Midwest) felt it was mocking them. Where they right, or taking things too seriously?
