South Korea defeated Australia 3–2 in a dramatic bronze-medal match at the 2026 AVC Men’s Continental Championship, completing an incredible comeback and securing qualification for the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Championship.

The match was played on September 13, 2026, at the Kitakyushu Municipal Gymnasium in Fukuoka, Japan. Korea claimed the bronze medal with a 3–2 victory, winning the match 16–25, 25–18, 22–25, 25–18, 15–9.

Australia made an outstanding start and completely controlled the opening set. Their height and powerful blocking caused major problems for the Korean attackers, with Australia producing five blocks in the first set alone. Korea struggled to find its rhythm, allowing Australia to take the opening set convincingly, 25–16.

Korea responded immediately in the second set. Lim Sung-jin’s aggressive serving created several important opportunities, while Heo Subong and Lim Dong-hyuk began to dominate in attack. Heo also delivered a service ace that extended Korea’s advantage to 13–7. Korea maintained control and won the set 25–18 to level the match.

Australia recovered in the third set and established a 15–10 lead. Korea fought back through Lim Sung-jin, Lim Dong-hyuk and middle blocker Lee Sang-hyeon, eventually tying the score at 21–21. However, Australia played better in the decisive moments. At 22–22, Lim Dong-hyuk’s attack was stopped by the Australian block before a service ace helped Australia complete a 25–22 victory.

Leading 2–1, Australia moved within one set of winning the bronze medal and qualifying for the 2027 World Championship. However, Korea refused to surrender.

The fourth set produced the most important turning point of the match. At 13–14, Korea’s opposite hitter Lim Dong-hyuk was forced to leave the court after experiencing back pain. With one of Korea’s most important attackers unavailable, Heo Subong accepted complete responsibility for the offense.

Heo scored an important open attack to give Korea a 15–14 lead before producing three consecutive points after Korea moved ahead 18–15. His spectacular performance helped Korea win the fourth set 25–18 and force a decisive fifth set.

Korea carried all its momentum into the tie-break. With Korea leading 2–1, Heo Subong, Lim Sung-jin and Lim Jae-young produced three consecutive points to create an early advantage. Korea then surprised Australia by using quick attacks through the middle. Lee Sang-hyeon scored important first-tempo attacks at 6–3 and 7–4, preventing Australia from fully using its height and blocking strength.

Korea remained calm and maintained control throughout the rest of the tie-break. At 14–9, Lim Jae-young’s attack touched the Australian block and went out of bounds, completing Korea’s remarkable comeback and beginning the bronze-medal celebrations.

Heo Subong was the outstanding player of the match and finished with a match-high 28 points. His performance became even more important after Lim Dong-hyuk was forced to leave the court in the fourth set. Lim Sung-jin added 15 points, while Lim Dong-hyuk recorded 10 points before his injury. Middle blockers Park Chang-sung and Lee Sang-hyeon contributed nine and eight points respectively, while setter Hwang Seung-bin added two service aces.

Lorenzo Pope led Australia with 23 points, while William D’Arcy contributed another 14 points.

Australia dominated the blocking category 13–8, while both teams recorded four service aces. Korea’s superior attacking efficiency ultimately decided the match. The Korean team scored 66 attacking points compared with Australia’s 52 and finished the match with 103 total points against Australia’s 95.

This was much more than an ordinary bronze-medal match. The top three teams at the tournament earned direct qualification for the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland. Korea’s victory therefore secured both the bronze medal and the final Asian qualification ticket, while Australia finished the competition in fourth place.
