Beautiful French Narrow Gauge Model Railroad – Saint Libéral HOn3½ Scale Diorama

Experience the romantic charm of 1950s rural France with “Saint Libéral”, a breathtaking H0m scale (HOn3½ scale) narrow gauge modular model railway layout built by the talented members of the Club de Modélisme de Draveil. Instead of building a high-density mainline railroad, the French model train enthusiasts focused on capturing the serene atmosphere of a fictional village nestled in the heart of the picturesque Limousin region near Limoges.
During the post-World War II era in the 1950s, meter-gauge narrow gauge railways wound through the French countryside, playing a vital role in transporting agricultural goods from village to village. Over time, these rural freight routes expanded into passenger service, bringing iconic French diesel railbuses and autorails to the tracks. The Saint Libéral model railroad layout brings this bygone era of historic French railway history to life with extraordinary craftsmanship, masterly scenic modeling, and precise miniature engineering.
Since construction began back in 1992, the members of the Club de Modélisme de Draveil have continuously expanded and refined this modular diorama world. Designed as an interchangeable modular model train exhibition layout, Saint Libéral can be configured in various setups up to a total length of 6.80 meters (22.3 feet). The model train layout works like a living diorama, telling a rich story about countryside life, vintage transportation, and French provincial culture in the 1950s.
From a technical perspective, the layout is built on Peco H0m scale meter-gauge trackwork, complemented by turnouts from Peco, Tillig, and Pilz, driven by slow-action Fulgurex and Lemaco switch motors. Most locomotives and rolling stock are custom-built on chassis from Tillig, Zeuke, Peco, and Bemo. The realistic structures, vehicles, and scenery feature heavily customized and kitbashed scale models from French manufacturers such as Haxo Modèle and L'Obsidienne, alongside German models from Brekina and Wiking. Combined with hand-crafted scratchbuilt buildings, realistic trees, period-accurate automobiles, and vintage French advertising signs, the miniature world of “Saint Libéral” captures the authentic spirit of post-war France in 1:87 scale.
