this was my very first street photography video i made before i started this channel and fell in love with talking to strangers.
When you're in the barrel, everything just slows down.
It's just slow motion.
You can't even, I can't even process it.
It's just, it's the greatest thing in the world.
Yeah, so my name is David Smith.
People call me DJ, I'm a junior.
I've lived here on the North Shore going on 10 years now.
I moved from the Big Island.
I'm from Florida originally.
And yeah, the island life is what it's all about for me, man.
It's, I couldn't imagine life anywhere else.
It's just the most amazing place in the world in my opinion.
You know, I've been around the world and I can't seem to stay away from the North Shore.
You know, it's, I consider it home now.
And the morning, you know, I tend to sleep in on the weekends
because I'm up early in the weekdays.
I'm a construction worker.
I set tiles.
So usually I take the opportunity to sleep in a little bit
because the mornings tend to get better here.
Sometimes there's a morning sickness and plus, you know,
all the people are frothing in the morning to get out.
So usually we wait for a lunch session.
We call it gentleman's hour.
So usually we'll score in the middle of the day, which is better.
Then we'll surf all day, all afternoon.
And the evenings usually get good too.
Glasses off and we'll get like a nice sunset session in
and go have a couple coldies and grind some good dinner
and do it all over again the next day.
Financially it's getting more expensive.
Back then $20 has more substance.
You can go to the store with $20 and you could get a lot of stuff to feed your family.
But now rent's going up.
The cost of labor is still...
The minimum is still within the $10, $11
when the cost of food and gas is going up every single day.
And you can see it right now.
It's just running the business too.
Trying to keep up with the change in price, the inflation.
But then it's hard to raise the price on the locals
because we know that they're working hard and they're not making a lot too.
Isaiah Lumsden, surfing, having a good time, trying to get barreled.
Going to college, hopefully, but not too sure about it.
Trying to figure out life and just go on life's path and trying to figure it out.
Surfing is almost like a religion.
When I go out and surf, it's no other connection.
When I connect with the ocean, I've never felt that feeling before,
that energy and that peacefulness.
And when you're in the barrel, everything just slows down.
It's just slow motion.
I can't even process it.
It's the greatest thing in the world all the time.
