For Japan, World War II did not begin with the attack on Pearl Harbor, but years earlier, when the Empire embarked on an ambitious expansion across Asia to secure natural resources, strengthen its military power, and establish itself as the dominant force in the Pacific. Convinced that the West was attempting to contain its growth through economic sanctions and trade blockades, Japanese leaders considered war inevitable. From the invasion of China to the outbreak of conflict against the United States and the British Empire, Japan fought a war vastly different from the one unfolding in Europe.

In a matter of months, the Imperial Army and the Japanese Navy executed one of the most astonishing military campaigns in history. Pearl Harbor, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and dozens of Pacific islands fell under Japanese control in a series of victories that seemed to confirm the birth of a new Asian empire. However, this rapid expansion concealed massive logistical challenges, an industrial base unable to compete with American production, and a war that became increasingly unsustainable as the years went on.

The situation shifted radically after the decisive battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, the Philippine Sea, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Step by step, Japan transitioned from conquering territory to desperately fighting to defend every single island. Strategic bombings destroyed much of its cities, fuel shortages paralyzed its fleet, and thousands of pilots participated in suicide missions known as kamikaze attacks. Finally, the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, alongside the Soviet Union's entry into the war against Japan, rushed the Empire's surrender on August 15, 1945, bringing an end to the Pacific conflict.
