The narrator and Mahina visit a remote island to hunt for surfable waves during a massive storm. After scouting the reefs via drone and boat, they find a few manageable breaks. While some waves are too shallow or unpredictable, they enjoy several rides before strong winds force them into the island's stunning blue lagoon to explore.
We are back. Mahina and I have plopped ourselves on another remote island.
We kind of only have one goal being here. This island happens to be in the path of a massive
storm, and so I looked at the charts. Way out here in the middle of the ocean, a huge storm
is going to pass over this island. We do not know what we're going to find. We have no idea
if there is waves here, but that is why we're here. We're going to look around,
we're going to check the reefs, we're going to look for setups, and hopefully, ideally,
we're going to find something surfable. And by surfable, I mean something I can surf, so
those standards are kind of... gives me a little anxiety because, you know, sometimes those waves
can be very heavy. And so we'll be looking for something semi-manageable, and if we find it,
we'll surf it, and if not, we'll be able to explore another beautiful island,
check out some reefs, and mark it off the list as far as waves go. And this swell will only show
one side of the things here. There's a hundred other days that... there's 365 other days of the
year that there could be other swell directions and other winds, so you never really know. You're
just here on that one tiny piece of time that there might be waves. And so we're going to
explore all these reefs, and the plan is, today, we've got ourselves some bicycles,
mode of transport on this island, and we're going to go see if we can find a fisherman
willing to take us out past the reefs. The lagoons here are pretty big, so it would be a very long
paddle, which we will do if we have to, but ideally, we find a fisherman or a boat that's willing to
possibly pay them or something, take us out, check out some of the reefs from deep water,
and on the clean side of the island. So that's the adventure. Enjoy the video.
So we've been looking around for a full day. We met a super epic boat captain. He took us out.
The wind was so much stronger than we expected, and so the swell was probably hitting tonight,
filling in tomorrow being really big. There's a few reefs that I think have huge potential
that I managed to spy out with the drone and then check them with the boat,
but ideally, tomorrow, we'll head out and be able to see it break on the boat and then potentially
surf it. We've come inside the lagoon and are just exploring some islands and living it up together.
Filmed a few more epic waves and just keep looking and enjoying it. Might go for a little swim.
The hunt continues. You, the viewer, was just the POV of a crab hole.
You have become the crab, the observer. How did that feel? Comment below.
Oh, it's like taking over. Crazy, man. What's your name again, brother? Nathan. Nathan.
And go a bit closer.
There we go. Okay.
What do you see down there?
The reef shelf that I saw in the drone.
The wind is super strong.
Waiting for a set on a new reef. Watch it feel, take it easy,
and if I see some good ones, I think there's a corner here to the channel behind me,
and I'll try to catch a few. Here comes a big one now. Look at this wave.
It's got something going on.
Super shallow little flabby anvil, so I think we'll try a set here in a minute.
I'm going to try to film one with the super slow. I'm going to try to catch a few,
but this reef is so subdued that I wouldn't want any more than this, just considering how remote.
This surgeon.
Hey, got the legs need warming up, but had a fun little bowl on it. No barrel.
What is this thing? It's such a double up.
Look at this thing.
First surf back.
It's not quite there, quite there, but fun to surf anyway.
Good gear. I'm so excited to have good gear on. I've had surf booties and
gave this wave a try, gave it a chance. Look at the next potential spot.
Oh, I took my leash already.
If your man is not wearing booties, a hooded rash guard is not core.
At least you got a couple. It was fun to try. It just was like not really doing the barrel thing,
but like kind of trying so short. And then the gnarly ones, it barrels again on the second half,
so you couldn't go on the gnarly one. The gnarly one was clamping and then opening and then clamping.
I can see in the reef, like the reef would like force it to double up and then it wouldn't go
all the way open. I was like, ah, I'm going to check it out.
Good.
Let me see the blue. So the wind has driven us inside the lagoon. We went looking for a
few more waves and just the wind was picking up stronger and stronger. That happens. The wind is
what brings the swell, but sometimes when they're combined, it just turns into a kind of a storm.
And so we have come inside the lagoon and are now just exploring. And it's one of the
bluest, craziest looking lagoons we've ever seen. Just sand, big strips of sand and this bright,
bright, deep blue. And so we're checking other parts of the reef on the swell facing side of
the island, which is massive. It's taking the brunt of the swell, but it's also taking the
brunt of the wind. You can see some huge waves out there, 15 to 20 foot. Okay, let's ride.
