AI GeneratedThis video compares the off-road capabilities of the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands (Sasquatch package) and the Subaru Outback Wilderness. While the Subaru is a competent vehicle for camping and light trails, the Bronco Sport proves to be a superior off-road machine due to its aggressive tires, robust underbody protection, and specialized chassis geometry.
Hi everybody. Welcome to the Truck King YouTube channel. I'm Matt and we are here today with two
off-road focused SUVs. Over here we have the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands with the Sasquatch package
and over here we have the Subaru Outback Wilderness. Well you know we're going to
take them off-road on our trails. We're going to see how they handle the dirt and the mud.
Let's get into it. So let's start this one off by talking power here. Over here in the Subaru
we're making 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and that's from a 2.4 liter turbocharged
boxer style engine and over here similar power 250 so 10 less horsepower but the exact same torque
277 pound-feet of torque and that is through a two-liter engine. Now behind these engines we get
a little bit of difference. We have a CVT in the Subaru and we have an eight-speed over here in
the Bronco. So over here on the Ford you get the Badlands Sasquatch package. Now the Sasquatch
package can come on the Badlands as well as the Outer Banks model so you can get it in two
variations but here today Badlands. So what are you getting with that package? Up front here we're
getting that large bull bar which is pretty cool. You're getting the unique styling in the grille
and I love that they've got the two the silver painted metal that carries right down into that
skid plate so you've got lots of protection. Certainly for when we get out on our trails we're
going to be using that. Coming around the side here you do have a set of 29 inch Goodyear Territory
RT tires so getting out here in the mud today shouldn't be a problem. I love these little hooks
you know I'm just going to show them off they're not new or anything but you know when you are
going off road or you got a canoe on here or even just a roof box having a fixed tie down point
without having to go in under the hood always welcome always handy. You get your badges you
get the accents and you get the unique wheels here as well and around the back actually you get these
really beefy recovery hooks built into the bumper there. Now I'm hoping we're not going to need
those today but you know at least we've got them they're up high they're out of the mud
so let's go have a look at the Subaru and see how it stacks up. So over here on the Subaru now
the wilderness package does get a unique wilderness grill and I don't know about you
guys but if this was 20 years ago I might have called that Subaru in black plastic a little
gaudy just not very sightly however Subaru they're following in Bronco's footsteps big
stamp name on the front I don't blame them for that but it's a little could have been done better
put it that way. Down low you're getting the hexagonal LED fog lights and moving around the
side here you don't have a ton to talk about compared to over there on the Sasquatch we do
have a set of Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires here now they are more of an on-road
focused tire so we might be looking at a little bit of a battle of the tires when we get out in
the mud today we will find out. I did really like coming around here and it's something that maybe
people don't talk about much on this car but they've pulled the cladding out of this so you're
marketing it as an off-road vehicle and you've pulled a lot of that cladding out from under the
door line there so you've given yourself better angles on the side especially for break over and
getting over obstacles so that should be handy today really nice set of roof rails up top again
with the nice gold accents and lots of different things you can set up up there and I don't even
need Liam to follow me here because there's nothing to talk about I've got no tow hooks
on the back no recovery hooks I hope this one doesn't get stuck. So right now I want you guys
to drop down into the comments below and let us know what you think of this Badlands Sasquatch
and this Outback Wilderness and while you're down there check out a button that says hype if you guys
hook us up with some hype and some interactions that means we can keep bringing you the content
that hypes you up. So we're going to be going off-road let's talk about what's under these
vehicles. First I wanted to point out that the bottom of the bull bar does include your recovery
points so there are two large fixed rings here on the front of the vehicle and like I said before
you've got that nice aluminum skid plate that continues seamlessly through the bottom and just
to show you the classic magnet oh I lied that's actually a mild steel that's not quite aluminum
I don't quite know what that is it's an alloy of some nature but regardless nice metal skid plate
into the bottom seamless transition into our engine undershield which is also a thick piece
of steel behind here we get subframe and then we've got kind of just more heat shielding I
would say than anything and of course that sound deadening and aero almost carpet material all the
way down to the back fuel tank gets plastic oh no fuel tank gets steel okay okay I'll take that
steel on the fuel tank is actually not all that common in this segment so that's actually really
good for Ford and then on this side we seem to be either missing a piece or maybe they just don't
include one we're not quite sure don't see any damage but for today it's just bare floor so
let's see what the Subaru has so we're here under the Subaru now and now that we're underneath I can
report there are recovery points there are tow hooks here and here but they are so recessed
under that front lip that getting to them in a stuck situation would not be my definition of fun
and then I've got my magnet for the only piece of metal under here this little guy this is aluminum
but I would like to point out that it is riveted into plastic so this undershield here the splash
shield plastic plastic we have some carpet type material a little bit further back here
and then when we get all the way back to our fuel tank plastic plastic so that is a one material
story here under the wilderness and somebody else has already had this uh off-road and pretty dirty
so why don't we go do the same and we'll see how these two do when we hit the trails hey everybody
listen we got a new shipment of giddy up so what's a giddy up well this will get your butt
into your tall truck or your lifted truck and if you're not over six feet tall as your kids and
your wife aren't you really need one of these go below to the link in the description and it'll
take you right to the sale page so we're sitting in the outback now and before we get out on the
trail I figured let's check out our off-road modes and our off-road cameras and see what kind
of goodies that we're working with here today so down in the center I do have a dedicated camera
button which is nice so I select that guy and that actually will help me cycle through or I can
use the touch screen up here so let's see what we've got we've got our nose camera our forward
camera do a little bit of movement here so you can see that yeah okay it's a little slow to refresh
but still good to see that right off the bumper especially having that dedicated line for how far
a wider angle there oh and that's my side down from the mirrors that's also nice for just wheel
placement in the front and then we do get that kind of augmented bird's eye which is nice oopsie
sorry and then reverse cameras we've got your standard I got a wide angle it allows me to look
down the sides but it doesn't really show my reversing that's okay we can still see at least
wheel placement if we need it that's nice and I do like that when this thing starts yelling at me
on the trail I'll be able to shut those off real quick and not have to listen to the beeping as
far as drive modes go here in the Subaru I do have our x mode so you'll see up here in my instrument
cluster the button is right here on the steering wheel just thumb operated and I have x mode with
the snow and dirt and x mode with the deep snow and mud and then just regular so we're over here
in the Bronco Sport now and I'll start down low here with my different selectable controls so you
do start with your goat mode selector there and goat for anybody who isn't familiar the goat over
any terrain mode selector and as you roll that wheel you cycle through your different modes you
got normal slippery we also have eco sport off-road rally and of course rock crawl so we do have a lot
of options to play with and we will get to all of those when we get on our trails now different
modes there also do lock you'll see here the lights came on and rock crawl my four-wheel drive
lock selector as well as my rear locker now as far as our cameras go I do have a dedicated camera
button right there I'll turn that on and then I've got my different options so that is just a forward
looking camera for off-road mode and it does show your wheel track there which is nice we've also
got the 360 at the same time as well as having that wheel track that's actually really handy
then we also get a wide angle in the front which is really framed well by that bull bar there but
that's okay in this package we get our mirror camera so we can see our wheel placements there
and then we have our reverse camera which doesn't have a whole lot going on it seems to only have
oh there we go yeah wide angle and a regular angle that's about all we got in the back now
that's nice the side view cameras do look at the back wheels here so you can see where you're being
placed while you're on the trail not that you're going to be backing up that much in this thing
but I do think it's time to select our forward and go hit the trail oh actually you know what
there's dad let's go get dad maybe we'll bring him off-road yeah why not look he's in the camera
see how long it takes him to notice oh he still hasn't figured it out all right oh there it is
yeah we'll get him in the video today how's that sound all right let's get off road and have some
fun so we've jumped in here in the Subaru Outback and like I mentioned in the Ford we did pick up
dad he was just wandering around in the forest so figured Steve's off today he's a little under the
weather so uh at least you still get two Elmer's in the video we should still have some fun
we're going to start out here in the meadow today we're going to hit our mud troughs and then our
off-camera ruts and I think we're going to start with we got mud so why don't we go deep snow and
mud mode so we need mud because it's really slippery yeah we've got x mode on we had torrential
rain here yesterday yeah so there's water in places that we slick water in places we were
not expecting it yeah so let's check out the trough now yeah it's full of water you can't
even see the edge there the water I'm not worried about like I said it's just it's gonna be super
slippery yeah so the battle here with these two vehicles is going to be tires I think in this
obstacle well I've had an overhang yeah we do have a little bit more ground clearance here in
the outback though we've got nine and a half inches of ground clearance in the outback
ground clearance but I'm afraid you're gonna stuff the nose yeah we're gonna find out well
better tell Liam to let us know he knows he knows he's watching he's watching you're pushing mud a
little bit a little bit I think you're okay I think you should clear if you can start moving
all right we're gonna try to climb here folks yeah you're good now okay okay that's actually
not too bad considering how deep that is oh a little steering input there and again I think
that was more tires than anything but okay actually pretty impressive so you had nine
inches of ground clearance over here so let's see how we set up on these off cambers and we'll see
how our breakover angles you mean the wrecked cambers that you guys wrecked that we haven't
fixed yet yes those exact ones so let's get lined up here all right so here we go with our off
cambers now so we do have an approach angle of 20 degrees which you'll see in the trough where we
kind of kissed the mud there not the best but also dropped right into something yeah that's
that is that is plow yeah that is one of the holes that you made yep that is just plow time you need
to go to the right let's go check it out hold on hold on all right so the brain trust right now
is outside looking at everything yeah well the first thing is you need to be more to the right
yes you need to go about two feet to the right I see that I was trying to avoid the section that we
did some damage on there we go now we're moving okay so yeah we're going more to the right yeah
here we go okay so there we are up now let's see how the breakover works on the doors
I mentioned off the top that they've eliminated some of the cladding under the doors oops
there's two tires in the air it's figuring it out okay okay well done they eliminated a lot of the
cladding under the doors so there's less to rub which is kind of what I was hoping to show off
there's our other two tires traction control action all right it figured it out nicely done
well it does but it's rough it is rough it is rough and it takes a while to figure that one
out now we're not going to do the big ruts because if it struggled with the little ones that's going
to just be a complete turtle fest yeah so we'll uh we'll hop out of here we'll get over in the
it fares on the same obstacles all right so we've jumped into the bronco sport now
and dad has already got this set here so goat modes we are in our off-road mode off-road mode
we've got the four-wheel drive lock on but we have not locked the rear I figure we don't have
that option over in the Subaru so we may as well give this a fair shake yeah see what it does but
I did uh shut the traction control off okay that's fair I mean so if we do get spinning
it's fine like I said the mud is this is going to be a battle of tires so I think that was the
slipping that we felt over there yeah in addition to the you know that front bulldozer blade digging
into the side of our mud pit there yep so let's see if we've got better angles over here all right
well let's drop in all right yeah yeah no hesitation no spin it just walked right through there
whereas the Subaru I kind of had to think about the line I had to kind of pick a pick a way to go
then of course we had the spin climbing out so that was made it a little bit tougher that was
the thing I mean it was okay but like you know I guess at the end of the day if you get out
then it did all right but it just seemed to be a lot more drama in the Subaru yes all right we're
lined up now for the off camber and so we do have a little less ground clearance over here in the
bronco sport we actually have almost three quarters of an inch less at 8.6 inches of ground
it doesn't concern me as much as the overhang yeah so over here I think we're in better shape
than okay you had a little bit of wheel spin just yet come bring it to a stop there just
to compare it little wheel spin but this thing figures it out right away unlike the shaking and
rattling we had over there yeah now just for a laugh let's do the big let's do the big ones all
right let's do the big ones so we've got the taller off camber now and I mean I was not bringing
the Subaru in here a little wheel spin there two tires in the air but that's okay oh yeah oh okay
there's that rut that Steve and I made all right did a fabulous job yeah so there's there's your
real difference is that that was a battle of fascia and tires there for sure yeah um and over
here I mean they called them both off-road modes but let's face it which one is really off-roady
here well yeah but it's also nice for me like I said we did not lock up the rear axle yeah so and
I always love to have something in reserve I know lots of guys will come on and they'll go oh no you
gotta lock everything up go in four low do everything before you even get off off payment
I'm like no no let me go in and fairly normal modes because then when I do get in trouble which
I will then I'll have something to fall back on so we made our way out here in the Subaru to the
left hook and again I'm going to go into my only two drive modes x mode deep snow and mud that's
what I've got I've got no other lockers no other anything I'm in drive and I've got my feet that's
about all we're working with here what about the traction control I've got traction control it
says it's off I can turn it off but in x mode yes it does turn it off automatically the only thing I
can add here is I do have a pretty decent nose camera so maybe we'll keep that on for just
watching obstacles well that's good or you could look through the windshield yeah no I'm gonna
drive down here well just for the bumper just for the bumper today because we are that is true and
I guess maybe you know you can spot rocks better yeah exactly because in our part of the world rocks
in place of my wheels a little bit better a constant so like we mentioned in the meadow
we've had a ton of rain so lots of mud in here there we go yeah I mean this thing is competent
well here's where your clearance is going to be good because we got deep ruts and we certainly
don't want to get high centered yeah like that yeah like that and then go a little bit to your
nasty rock right there yeah we're going around it we're going around it I'm gonna put my back
wheel on it here I think right there yep oh yeah all right well everything is slick and muddy and
wet and see if you can make it up there spinning fish tailing okay okay um I think you can do
better I think we can do this I just well we're back in the dry you just need to let your tires
spin till there is nothing dry right now until they eject the mud if you look out your window
there's nothing dry well right now it is because we're on the hill under under the grass is just
slick look look at that look at that yeah yeah well I get that okay okay so you got to get to
there where there's no grass correct correct yeah that's gonna be yeah and that's all tire
that's all tire struggle there nope let's try a little left a little right here how's it look
right here I don't have you're good go to the right okay oh come on oh I don't care about
obstacle detected it keeps telling me obstacle detected it's just seeing weeds
yeah that is kind of a problem particularly when you're in off-road mode it's like yeah
yeah we're gonna back up a little just pre-water here yeah I don't get right into it maybe a little
bit of flat ground we'll get some momentum you gotta you gotta be willing to stay in it for a
bit if you can feel it cutting though so I don't know traction is off traction's off I don't even
think traction on would help in this situation so I don't want traction on so you saying it's
I'm saying this is all four-wheel drive all four wheels
all right nice foot to the floor yeah keep her going keep her going keep her going I don't want
to fish tail off the trail here not the time to lift all right all right I got a flying microphone
here but yeah all right we made it holy cow all four wheels all four wheels spinning it did climb
out of there yep all right that was significant let's uh let's reevaluate what we're doing here
well you got two choices you either turn around and head back the way you came
yeah or we go down the steeper hill but at least that way we're going down but when you
but when you drop into the mud you got to be going yeah we got to have a little momentum
let's do it I think I think if this thing can make it through here that's actually
pretty impressive I was surprised it struggled with that hill but again I'm leaning to I'm
leaning tires yeah that was that was a struggle of tires more so than the vehicle yeah no I agree
with that we've got power we've got the all-wheel drive that's not a concern here now these rocks
might be a bit of a concern stay stay right I'd say stay a hard right yeah okay nice and gentle
here yeah the has the years go by here these rocks become more and more exposed yeah well
more we run over them okay there's just one you're going to drop I'm heading I'm heading
towards it I just don't want to hit this stump over here but I'm watching it in my camera you
see that one right there yep there's the drop okay all right well now decide how you want to
do this because like I said once you're in you can't stop yeah this is water and mud it's going
to be a gun it's going to be a mud slingers paradise coming up here in a second yeah you
can maybe stay out of it for uh for about 10 feet if you go left yeah and try to stay on the high
side of that one right but then you'll dump in right over there I see it I'm going to move this
I'm going to yeah Liam is just flagging us I'm going to move this big rock I think okay so I can
go do that I'll sit here and think about what he's doing okay like I said once you're in
hell for leather boy we've moved I moved two rocks so we can get a little speed here
and uh we've advised Liam to stay out of the way because it's going to get splashy if you
I'd actually back up about 10 feet I'm serious you got to go here yeah I think you're right
we do have a couple recovery hooks in the front there's no recovery hooks I don't want it I don't
want recovery hooks today I don't want to be doing no recovery yeah it's usually you that has to
recover us so that's kind of unfortunate I guess we can call mom too many mosquitoes for recovery
all right here we go let's roll all four wheels are just spinning
we have to not lift up there was a little rock there a little kiss on the side
and then we slow down because holy cow there you go oh yeah well done okay that was
speed was our only choice there for sure that was balls to the wall man it was it was there
wasn't much slower I could have gone there I mean we had a couple of uh we had a couple of
little kisses but quite honestly we didn't we didn't crash as bad as I would have thought so
that little bit of extra clearance is doing its job and I will say I mean it didn't I was also
expecting I braced myself for that big throw me around bump at the bottom and yep it didn't it
really ate it up yeah the suspension over here is quite nice a little momentum out of that last
mud pit oh and we're out yeah okay well all right no recovery here bronco shouldn't struggle but
let's uh let's go see how it does yeah but I'll be driving so we've jumped over into the bronco
sport badlands now we're going to do the exact same trail in the same direction that the Subaru did
yep um we both said the same thing getting out of the Subaru which is the before it's going to do
it how much less it struggles is where we're kind of curious right now sure so all right we were in
x mode off-road over there you're in off-road mode again over here yep whenever you're ready
four-wheel drive traction control is off have not locked up the rear axle so that we can keep it as
as even steven with the Subaru okay okay ready to rock yeah let's do it okay all right I think
the biggest thing over here is going to be the angles so we have a 31 degree approach angle
and a 28 degree departure with a 21 breakover which Subaru doesn't even list a break over
I'd have to go digging for it so and we don't have that air dam down low so I mean even now
you could see the trail that I had to kind of pick my way through we're just we're walking
through with no no concerns in the world that's it running through a little warm sofa all right
this was where I got stuck yep right here and it is still you're spinning you're spinning but you're
still moving yeah well it's digging oh there goes a mic there it is mic drop okay they both dropped
the mic there you go all right and we're up okay so honestly that was like a tiny bit of drama just
enough to have fun you were spinning the back end got a little sideways going up the hill
but I mean that's also the ground right now because it's so saturated yeah right you felt
it too under the grass it was just oh yeah but again tires I think the big battle here was my
tires on road biased got caked up right away yep these Goodyear Wrangler territories they
either ejecting mud or just handling them better yeah not to mention taller tire we're not dragging
anything in that mud yep so easy easy peasy so let's head over to the other side and we'll uh
do the downhill rock crawl and see if you need as much speed as I needed
to get out of the other side of this trail okay I think I just saw Liam flying by with a million
mosquitoes on him were they carrying him was he yeah he's coming his feet were off the ground
oh there he is okay all right he looks like he's ready okay so we're heading downhill now
okay I'm gonna try to follow to the right same as what you suggested you've got the same camera
that I've got so you can see that stump that's the only thing I was worried about
is skewing this far right a little mud in the brakes there
lots of mud in the brakes there oh okay there's a sound ABS is doing its job on there okay that's
okay are we ready here we go we're ready all right so you're gonna you're gonna speed it too
okay here we go and we're in whoop
deep mud deep mud but okay there's that same rocks I bumped with the Subaru
speed is the winner there yeah okay I could have gone maybe a little slower a little softer
but I mean no struggle no struggle you didn't have the wheel spin I had I mean I was almost
I almost had my foot on the floor at one point no I didn't have my wheels I didn't have anywhere
you felt like you had so much more just control in that mud and just walked it out good job good
job Sasquatch yeah yeah all in all you know and just as a general thought right now I mean I've
driven a lot of Broncos which I mean I love them and so I've always felt that the sport was a bit
of a you know Namby Pamby right grocery getter Ford Escape with a different body shoved on it
but you know what this thing is legit yes it's legit judging by what we just did right there
uh smacked a bunch of stuff but then again that's what the skid plates are for this thing actually
we were talking about this on the rack before we got out here it has a full steel skid plate under
the fuel tank well and that's one of the few vehicles in this segment that I've actually
seen have that type of armor yeah so yeah no well done well done Bronco absolutely every
every hit that we took uh you could hear that it was like it was hitting uh some kind of a skid
plate and it wasn't tearing it wasn't tearing it anything no no lights on no we're out of the mud
we didn't get stuck yeah no lights on that's always a good that's always a good sign let's
go collect Liam from the bugs and we'll uh we'll head out of here and wrap this up okay fair we
are coming to the end of this video guys and I think the big takeaways here are Subaru Outback
off-road really competent did well tire struggled so maybe with a better set of off-road tires it
would be that much better certainly was not unimpressed however Bronco Sport Sasquatch
no struggles we were very confident with what we were getting into we knew we would get out of
it did everything it promised to do very very well and like my dad even mentioned it was it
was almost impressive for the type of vehicle it is but I think the bigger story here too is
pricing here in Canada Bronco we're looking at just north of $59,000 and over here just a little
bit over $51,000 so we're looking at an $8,000 difference so if you want to compare those you
could get a really nice set of off-road tires over here you've got a slightly longer vehicle
you've got more cargo space a little bit more leg room a little bit more compact so I mean pricing
it does kind of position itself as that kind of camper weekender canoe kind of off-road adventure
guy versus true mud but I think ultimately what do you guys think drop down into the comments
what would you take would you take the Bronco with the Sasquatch or would you look at this
Outback with the Wilderness Package and as always when you're down there don't forget to hit like
hit subscribe hit join to become a member of Truck King and then of course circle right back
to see what we're going to be testing next thanks for watching
