The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that no planning permission was granted for a religious structure near Terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport and has directed that it be removed.

The development comes after BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya raised concerns over the structure and visited the taxi parking and VIP arrival zone near the airport. Somaiya questioned how the unauthorised construction was allowed to come up on government-notified land.

With the MMRDA confirming the absence of requisite approval and ordering action, questions are now being raised over enforcement and oversight around a sensitive airport zone.
