I Planted 1,059 Dahlias in My Front Yard... 107 Days Later | Dahlia Garden Tour

Oh yes, good morning dahlia growers. It is the Dahlia Mandrew here and I'm going to take you for a tour of my front yard dahlia patch. It is August 30th. It's the 107th day since planting dahlias and things are really blooming. So I'd probably say maybe 70 percent in bloom, give or take. It's quite in bloom. It just doesn't look like it because I'm cutting every single good bloom that comes and I'm making bunches. I'm putting them over on the flower stand right here. Look at this dragonfly. Oh, I thought it was gonna land on me. So it is a rainy day today and traffic has been slow this morning. I haven't had to deal with too many customers and I have a big jump on everybody with the stand. There's 13 or something out there and supposed to be just more cloudy and rainy all day. So I'm gonna take you on a tour while it's dry in between rainstorms here and show you some of the blooms. I didn't have to cut a ton yesterday because of the rain. So I'll show you now before I start cutting all of them down for the day and maybe I'll cut a few for you too. So this is the first row. You can see it's getting quite dense. I can't really walk through it without bumping into dahlias anymore and we still have a lot of growing to do. We have all the purples here but this one dazzling magic. I don't know why I did that. It's hilarious though so I'm leaving it. We got short creme de cassis here. Can you even see that? No, you can't. Let me show you. We have short creme de cassis right here and then over here right next to it this is where I have my philip mingus senior. This is the dahlia that I am like super excited for. I got it from cutting and I've never done cuttings in my life. I've never bought in cuttings before and I have two of them right here. So they're small right now but I've disbudded everything except for the one bud and it's growing really thick stuff. I don't know, it's kind of funky looking. This one here too. I've got another just like one bud and another one bud so I'm disbudding that one because I really want to see that get as big as it possibly can and yeah I'm not going to get a ton of chances because I started it pretty late so we'll see how it all grows and how it comes together but I'm really excited for this. Next to those I have my castle drive and it is blooming and it looks awesome. Right across from that I have my Isabelle which is a version of, well it's not a, it's its own version. It's like Cornell bronze but purple. Check it out. Neat eh? And so I got a bunch of those. Okay we're going off the tripod. You're in my hands now. So here we have, here I snuck in a couple of crazy loves. Hope you love them. The Lupin Chris section doing well and then right across from Lupin Chris I have Diva really starting to bud up. You can see and a few others. I'll keep going. So I'm moving the camera like around my chest like I'm beautiful. Taller than me. Bear with me on the names here because I'm in fact with many varieties that I won't remember. This one's Skiply Grande. My labels. This is Penhill Watermelon. Oh man it's so cool. I really love that. I hope it gets cloudier today so I can. Labyrinth. This is a Mackie Bloom. Apple Blossom Double. So if you are new here this is right outside my front door. Check it out. Here's the front door right here. Here's our kitchen. Front porch. Golf course in the distance and then dahlias. So that's where we're at. There's a thousand fifty nine dahlias in the front here and they all have to get dug up in the fall. So if you're new here now you're caught up. So this whole row here. So this whole row here is almost all completely new variety and they're all labeled. I can't remember all the names as I go through them so I have to look at the names. I'm learning them though and the ones that I love, the blooms that I love, I'm like oh like I know their names off by heart now. And then over on this side we leave oh yeah we leave the middle here because we like to have dinner out here and just chill and it's nice to have like a big open spot. I know I could fit two more rows but I'm not willing to sacrifice that freedom of like dragging a table out there and having dinner because we love to do that. So over here I'll take you through everything too. These ones were all early bloomers because I planted them 40 days earlier than all the other varieties. I had about 35 to 40 tubers that I started like 40 days early and so all of those went in as plants. They've been blooming for like months. And then beyond that I've got Bloom Chris Jean which is just starting to bloom and then Bella Bermera which is already in bloom, Elsie Houston, Otto's Thrill which isn't blooming yet, and then Peaches and Cream. I'll show you this little Ferncliff Dolly at the start of this row. But over here oh yeah and this one Ferncliff Fuego, pretty neat. But then keeping going, so this here is the Bloom Chris Jean section. Look at how tall it is. So this one is almost as tall as me and it's blooming. I got lots just starting to bloom right now so it's going to be like a Bloom Chris Jean festival out here. Just look at the size of this one. It is huge and it looks so perfect. Like I don't even think there's a single bug bite, maybe one. I was going to cut it today. I might. I'm just not sure if I want to leave it another day or not. But like look at the size of this thing. It looks so beautiful. They're so tall. I'm super happy with the Bloom Chris Jean section and like it's just coming alive. But right next to it I have Belle of Barmera. And then I'm going to drop the camera down. Stay with me. Okay ready? Watch this. This monster is your Belle of Barmera and then 16 of its buddies all around it. And then I have Elsie Houston coming as well. But like I said I'm cutting blooms every single day so it never really looks like there's tons of blooms. Uh oh, looks like we have a customer. On the end of this row I got peaches and cream. So look at this variety. It is super cool, super nice. Isn't that amazing? And people ask me why I cut my stems so short and honestly it just doesn't matter because my bottle arrangements are about this tall so if I get it in there that much it's never gonna be dry. So that's fine. And then the plant is going to do its thing and shoot me buds. I'll show you. Look at this. The plant is still going to give me all these buds and look even these I could get away with and if I didn't want to get away with it I could just disbud like this one. It looks like this is going to be too small so I'll just click click and then I'll cut it here and you know that's a what nine inch stem but not even maybe yeah maybe nine inch and that'll be fine for me like that'll be more than enough for me like I don't stress about cutting super deep into the plant so that I get longer stems because it all just depends what you're looking for and some plants give you super long stems just on their own like I have uh like I have a few that just naturally will give me like a 30 inch stem or like a 25 inch stem like I'll show you in a few minutes bye Shannon's going to work look at they're as tall as her over there it's pretty amazing so this row this is where I've got all these cool oh man there's so many cool varieties to show you I'll just show you so you get the peaches and cream that I just cameo really cool variety too and some big white ball variety beside it it's kind of a mix there's like three different types of white in there here's the first auto's trill some big big buds from auto's trill coming oh we got another customer showing up this here is my cafe ole section lots of buds I'm taking every single bloom and then we've got my ferncliff inspiration this is really tall too this is over six feet um budapest blush but the blooms look at this here I'll try to do a selfie I don't know if this is going to work budapest blush the blooms are only just now starting to show color they've basically just been white like duds the whole time and then the back petals I don't know if you can see this but the back pedals here I guess I don't need to be on camera burnt I'm afraid so that's that row I'll jump back on the tripod in one second but look at this this is our zinnia patch my camera sony a7s3 great photo camera asparagus my bunching table which I love hiding in my pear tree so going into this next row we've got totally tangerine really small right here you can't even see it it's itty bitty I'll show you in one second actually I'll show you right now look at so totally tangerine really small and then I've got jomanda the section of jomanda which is great none of it's quite ready it's almost ready but jomanda takes a long time to fill in that green center and then kimono buzz which I love as well I'll show you kimono buzz a little closer this is kimono buzz a little bit closer beyond kimono buzz we have sylvia which a man I got so few sylvia this year last year I had like tons of sylvia I sold so many sylvia I lost so many sylvia and by the time I planted I had like five and they didn't even perform well so I have like two I think okay sylvia plants which is exciting because I love it it's like my favorite um but then beside it I have these Applesenia snyga absolutely gorgeous bloom but look at what happens on the back it's just like my budapest blush so it burns on the backs before it ever really hits good like nice openness so I think it might be like a climate issue like my climate is too hot for budapest blush and Applesenia snyga I've had it before with another variety called Grand Prix it just hated it here and it's the same exact effect so I'm pretty sure that's just a climate issue it's like these dahlias don't really like it here maybe it was bred in a cooler climate I'm not positive about that but it feels right um and I think it makes sense and then after that I have more um what do you call it uh Penhill watermelon so I had planted Penhill watermelon in two spots don't ask why long story uh I explain it in my dahlia growing guide which uh oh the dahlia growing guide by the way is going to be amazing I'll just take a second to talk about the dahlia growing guide so basically out of the last 107 days that we've been in the garden I have filmed 60 of those days 60 so more than half of the days I've been out here with my camera doing this talking to the camera but in more of like a follow along with what I'm doing kind of vibe so just for an example I'd be like today we're going to be corralling again for the third time just like we did back on day 27 and day 63 and everything's going to be referenced by the day and it's going to be packaged into weekly videos so each week so then the first week you're watching that video is the first week that I'm growing dahlias and then we end up growing the dahlias together through the whole season so every week you're referencing the video so you're able to see exactly what I'm doing out in my dahlia patch not in a this is what you have to do kind of way but in a this is what I'm doing and this is why kind of way so as you grow you're just skipping all of the guesswork so if you're the person that bought like 100 dahlia tubers and it's your first year and you just don't want to blow those dahlia tubers and you want to make sure you do it right you get the grow guide and you follow along with me and you basically end up growing... jeez whoa that scared me oh I got goosebumps and then you end up growing those dahlias along with me someone with 10 years experience and you and you're following the steps that I'm taking and so you know with confidence when you go to your garden okay this is what I'm doing and this is why I'm doing it you're not guessing and you're not risking those valuable tubers and it's gonna be packaged into a full season of content from week one to the week that we put them into storage so this is going to be the largest dahlia growing guide that's ever been created me more information packed into this season of videos than like anyone has ever done before I'm not kidding I have filmed like three and a half terabytes and we still have like two months of the season to go I'm putting everything that I know into this and I haven't even been working I took all this time off work just so I can focus on this make myself my biggest film client because that's what I do for a living and really just make something that I'm super proud of that I know I did my very best on to help people grow with confidence and you know just not risk their valuable tubers and not plant and blow up because selling tubers I realized there's like this major desire to grow the huge amazing dahlias but then you plant them and you get disappointed and it's like that could turn you completely off from dahlias if you have one year's bad experience maybe you'll try a second year but maybe the second year goes crappy too and then you're less likely because you're spending money you're losing your tubers every year you're not growing good dahlias and you're putting in all this time and effort and you're not getting the results that you want it's just like disheartening and sad and I know and I know that feeling because like literally I did that for so many years um this is my ninth season growing so next year when you're all buying the guide it'll be my 10th year and this will just help remove all of that guessing and really help you grow with way more confidence and be able to reference my garden with yours the whole season but anyway let's get back to the tour this is the frankfurt inspiration it's so nice all right so this is my really tall budapest blush and it's maybe 6.3 feet but over here this is my kimono sit cut and it's got to be like seven feet look at how tall this is and remember I was telling you it gives really long stems like just on its own so without a single disc bud without anything this is just the stem length so if you want like super long stems just naturally this one's amazing another one that's really good for that is sylvia sylvia just gives you natural super long stems uh what else actually my cafe au lait gives me pretty long stems too there's a bunch of like really good long stemmers but kimono sika is great look at and it's super sturdy too you know no bend really at all no snap not much risk the the head is super strong too so i mean i'm being really rough with this i would never be this rough and you can see oh i kind of i think i kind of damaged it a little bit there but you can see it's just like ultra strong kimono sika we got a hummingbird fight oh i did not expect to get a hummingbird fight that was amazing the row next to all of my exciting orange ones that i just showed you is uh it's a bit of a mix it's like a i didn't really aim for a color i just kind of um with a bunch of varieties this one is uh avanti it's not ready or i'd pick one but avanti's right here and then behind that i have um brown sugar robin hood and a few others i'll just take you for a little walk so you can see it avanti not blooming yet i mean i had a couple i've been picking them like crazy it wasn't supposed to be here it was supposed to be sitting on this section right here it's been delivering pretty good pretty steady i've been taking everything like strong and mighty dazzling magic all on its own standing tall standing tall dazzling magic and all it's blurry my snow hodoris section is totally blowing it this is my snow hodoris section it's so far not blooming but i'm anticipating it will be fun blooming this is my kelvin floodlight a couple of um sad weird looking blooms not sure what happened but this area is um just what is this uh it's all from vessies and there were it was like a mixed eight pack and it came a little late and i saved a little spot for it so at the back i've got um that one big honking uh what's it called uh randy mingus randy and then uh it looks like i've got a bohemian spartacus next to it which is funny because this is my spartacus row at the start of the spartacus row i have at the start the spartacus row i have these beautiful um what are they uh black beauties uh cauley hill black beauty and they're so cool they're quite black this here is my straggly urchin it's not blooming yet just kind of starting to and then this is my this is my my spartacus row it's kind of blooming funky as well but i'm getting a couple it will start blooming really nicely in the next few weeks at the end of this row i have pinky swear this one is spent on the back these ones get spent on the back this is an example of ones that get spent on the back before they're spent on the front so looks like it's got a lot left to give right but then you know they're just like weak on the back and they drop petals so if you put them in arrangements it's like it's just there's petals all over the counter they kind of stink so really good on the plant oh that's cool not great off the plant oh but also just like look at the beauty so does it really matter like they're so pretty i could just stare at that all it's really nice um and then here we have copper boy copper boy always gets small for me i don't know i think it's just a small variety but copper boy so we're gonna move on we're gonna go just past the spartacus row into the purple into the purpley lavender pens gift row super fun row for the dinner plate fans because i have these giant pens gift that everybody really loves and i've got mission galactica up here at the front but back here it's just filled with giant pens gift from here on it's all pens gift and they're like massive let me find a good one look at this so you can just pick them you don't even need to cut them look at that isn't that amazing honestly that's just it's amazing it's truly amazing and there's there's so many of them like every morning that i pick them i'm just in awe it's look at how remarkable it is like lost lost for words this is the other side of the route but i just wanted to show you this is mission galactica i've been waiting to pick this because i wanted to photograph it but i clearly missed the window i was letting this one like stay on the plant for as long as i could but once you see petals on the ground you know you missed it look at this so if you're wondering what mission galactica looks like it's it's interesting but look at see the back pedals just crumbling off of it waited too long mission galactica i like how it's getting stormier throughout this tour it's been like an hour so far of me kind of just like putzing around out here and now it's like windy and it's cloudy and it's moody uh so anyway we're here in the cornell zone look at this this is so nice actually look at that full arm length just broke it off comes off so easy cornell like come on i have no idea how i have not been growing cornell in the past it is so good stem test durable strong you know amazing tight centered bloom that's not going anywhere oh my gosh it's striking like the center is so tight still and like i could have left it for sure and it would have orbed up a little bit more but hokey smokes that's so nice the hummingbirds are back wait i have to go back over here to this row the spartacus row because there's something that i missed that i want to show you that's so nice all right i forgot all about these two look at this this is black satin look how dark it is it's like darker than arabian nights but it's rounder and it balls up a little bit it's super cool and then this one i don't know the name of it i think it's lavender perfection it's pretty small though but the plant is a little bit straggly still so i'm hoping it'll get bigger all right let's go back over we were right oh yeah we were in the cornell cornell row so beyond cornell beyond cornell so beyond cornell is ferncliff rusty let me just zoom in on the buds there's actually so many i'll take you off the tripod and just show you how many there actually are it's amazing so the row starts with cornell but then it turns into ferncliff rusty and ferncliff rusty absolutely pops off like you get buds so quick and long stems and blooms like crazy so i'm taking like every bloom every single day and the next day i'm delivering another round so this is what the garden looks like from back here i've got my table all my rows you can see how much it trimmed off the bottoms of my rows already because it's just been the wettest august ever and i'm dealing with some powdery mildew so i'm just constantly um lifting the row so that they get good airflow trimming their skirts um and then here we've got cornell bronze this whole row is cornell bronze and the row beside it was supposed to all be boom boom uh which you can see it's dominantly boom boom right now but i've filled in all the gaps with other varieties because it was missing some spots because my boom boom did not perform well oh and look at this if you've been following along if you haven't this won't the branch that's turning into a plant so this little branch here um broke off of a plant and i just shoved it in the dirt for a little experiment video and so people following along will know what i'm talking about but that's where it lives um and then yeah so this is boom very um you know normal basic varieties that a lot of people like to grow just to have um you know filler in their varieties this plant is not healthy it's got powdery mildew you can see and i'm trying to combat it but as it does it's getting blown centers where the healthier plants do not have bloom centers and then this is the flower stand which got blooms in the sunshine i don't know who did that but i put them in the shade can't have blooms in the sunshine so it looks like i've already made a couple dollars so i have this sign please do not wander in the dahlias some peace and love so people don't hate me um because man sometimes we'll come out like at the bathroom you know in a towel and there's just people like standing on our deck it's crazy um there's like no um no boundaries but i don't want to put up signs all around the dahlia patch because i feel like it's like a bad vibe to have like do not enter no trespassing so i'm trying to be really polite but if you do see this in your mind i'm coming here don't wander around come to the flower stand wander down the road look at them from the that's the update from the front yard dahlia patch guys i hope this tour was cool i hope you like seeing some of the blooms and where things are going um this might be a new angle for you from seeing the patch so this is the uh kind of main road this is our dead end street here and then you see i've got the flower stand right here and people when they pull in they just kind of park right here walk over to the flower stand grab their bunches and take off i couldn't be are turning out i'm really glad that i did plant as closely as i did because i'm getting to see so many more different blooms at so many more different times for sure the plants could get way bigger and bushier if i didn't plant them so closely so if i had way more space i would probably space them out more but with the space that i have i don't mind squishing them and i think i figured out how to grow them super closely without much of a problem so it feels pretty good to actually uh start it do it this way and see it through and now have all these awesome blooms so i'm cutting every day i hope you're watching the daily cutting and i'm stacking content for this dahlia growing guide i'm so excited for it it's going to
