Getting Ready for Fall! Must Haves, New Decor Haul + Decorating Plans

Hi sweet friends, it's Amy and welcome back. Today I'm super excited because we're heading down to my decor storage area to pull out all of my fall decor. We're going to unpack my bins, sort through everything, get organized so it's easy to see what I have and pull from it as we start decorating. I'll also take you into my floral closet and share some of my favorite fall florals and my other must-haves for fall decorating. These are my favorite pieces that I seem to reach for year after year. I'll also give you a glimpse of some of the new pieces I've picked up and I can't wait to use and if you've missed any of my recent videos, we've already started transitioning our home into fall. As we go, I'll chat about some of my decorating plans for this season, so let's get started. Alright, so I thought I would start out today by pulling out my bins. From year to year, sometimes I forget what I actually have and it's always fun to just remember what I have and show you the pieces that I like to bring out every year. When I pack everything away at the end of the season, I really try to utilize every bit of space I can. So you'll find pumpkins tucked into other pumpkins, they are combined with ceramics and lanterns and all sorts of different things, but when I'm getting ready to decorate the next season, I like to pull those bins down and organize everything a little differently. I start by grouping similar items together or sometimes I'll group things by the room I think that I may use them in. It just makes it so much easier when it comes to decorating that I can just see where it is and pull from that area quickly. As we move a little deeper into the season, I'm planning to keep many of those warm transitional colors I've already been using, but now I'll start layering in more of those unmistakable signs of fall, changing leaves, pumpkins, acorns, and some richer seasonal florals. Even though we've already started transitioning some of our rooms, when I begin my full fall decorating, I'll still clear those spaces and start with a fresh canvas. I find that I'm much more creative when I can look at an empty space and reimagine it. Now that I've freed up a bin, I like to start organizing some of my pumpkins and you guys can see I've collected quite a few over the years. I usually group my white pumpkins together, then some of the softer fabric and colored pumpkins into one bin, and then I like my woven, more textural pumpkins all gathered together, and then my really large pumpkins usually have a bin all to themselves. So I'm just going to work on sorting and getting this all organized. So I already have all of my wall art here from fall kind of stacked, so I can come and grab it, and then I have this I need to open up, and I have placed here on the bottom. Another thing that I like to keep in mind from year to year is switching things up. Sometimes something that I used in the living room may end up in the kitchen this year, and sometimes just changing where a favorite piece lives makes it feel completely new again. Also, once I start decorating, I'll mix some of my newer finds with pieces I've collected and loved for years. I think the mix of old and new is what keeps our home feelings familiar and nostalgic, while still giving each season its own look. In addition to the ones that I just unpacked, here is where I store all of my pillow covers and my throw blankets that I might use for every day or during other seasons of the year. I also have my seasonal art stacked here as well, so I thought I would share that because I do have lots and lots of pillow covers, as you can see. I thought it would be a good time to sit down and share my must-haves for fall. These are the ones that I just love to bring out each and every year. They're not trendy, they're just pieces that I absolutely love, and they give me that warm, cozy feeling for fall. So first thing I like to do is incorporate lots of amber glass and copper. Amber glass is just such a rich color, and I have several of these bottles that I've collected over the years. Some of these are from Hobby Lobby, others are from antique stores, or even thrift stores, and I just love using them around our home. I like to put florals in them. I've also grouped them as a set or collection, which really is pretty during the fall time, and so I love the richness that these bring. And then copper pieces. Again, these are pieces that I've collected over the years. Nothing of this is from a season ago. These are old, old pieces. Some are antique finds. I love bringing out my copper tea kettles. This was the small one. I also have a large one. Love this color for fall. Here is a little pail that I just love to bring out each and every year, and many of these pieces are actually stored over on my everyday decor shelves here. Like behind me, I have baskets. I love bringing baskets and texture out during the fall. I think that is a way to warm up your space. Another piece that I like to bring out each fall is this little Southern Living at Home, like, container. I've used this so many different ways. I've added candles inside of it with florals. You can add just a beautiful table arrangement. You can even turn it up this way and kind of use it as a riser, put maybe candles on top of it, and just use it different ways. But I just love the texture. Again, that copper is a love of mine, especially during the fall time. I also have a little colander here that I got thrifted, and it was very bright. And so what I did was go in and kind of antique it myself so that it gives it a little bit more of a richness and dark color. And then I also did last year pick up a new piece that had that copper look. It's this cute little candle warmer. It looks like an acorn. And yeah, as you see, I'm not all about the pumpkins. I also love squirrels and acorns. You'll see that a lot in my fall decor. And so I thought this one was so cute. You can put your scent in a little cup here, and then the light heats it up, and it just radiates the scent all over. Again, just love all of the browns and just the copper and amber glass that I like to incorporate into my fall decor each season. Of course, for me, I absolutely love and cannot resist my florals and fall garlands for the season of fall. I mean, I just think that if you pop in fall florals into your everyday decor, you're going to be set and transition your home beautifully for the next season. So right here is our closet full of all of my favorite florals. So let's go ahead and take a look. All right, so this is my floral decor closet. I have all of my florals throughout the season kind of stored in here. I took them from totes and put them in here, and it's been working really great. Now this section here is all fall. I hang a lot of my garlands and things like that up here and let them drape down. I also have just some florals stuck in between the wire, and that stores very, very well. This section right here is more for my everyday wreaths, and then up here on the top, I have a stack of wreaths here that are all fall inspired. I have to say this one right here is one of my favorites. I love just the different color of leaves. It's so drapey and nice. Now there are a lot of fall off, so I actually have a bag up here that I've collected all the ones that fell off, and I kind of scatter them in and around my vignettes, which really looks cute. Here is some really pretty magnolia leaves that are velvet. They also have some pine cone embellishments. I have some fall arrangements and containers there, but I do like to create a lot of my own. So as you see, I kind of have the beiges and creams that I work my way into the more colorful fall leaves, greenery. These are also another of my favorites. I think they are actually like a mum, I think they're supposed to be, but they're in the tan color. But I do have quite a bit of fall stems that I'm super excited to create beautiful arrangements this fall. Another change I like to make in the fall time is switching out my throws. So I take those linens and very soft, lightweight cottons, and I remove those and add in chunky knit blankets and ones with these rich, really pretty fall colors. These are two of my favorites. I think they both were from Hearth and Hand a while back, and I know they do have some really great cable knit throws. This one has just really cute fringe at the bottom, and this one has some tassels. So I always like to look for that kind of detail as well. And then I always like to stick with neutral colors, browns, these taupes and creams. I think that just brings richness to your space. And of course, olive greens, you're going to see that a lot as I style this year that I'm bringing in a little bit more of those deep, rich olive tones. For fall, I also like to switch up my books that I like to use as risers or even just as an accent. So I like to bring in the colors of fall. So I've picked up like this color, as well as this one here. I like to source these in antique stores as well as thrift stores. I also found some dark ones way back a couple probably five years ago, and they were like a dollar each. And because they are like this type of material, I could take a piece of sandpaper and rough up the edges to make them look a little bit more worn. So I really like that idea. So you can definitely do that. You could also pick up ones that you can change the color yourselves by painting them to match your decor. So I like to use these again in with my vignettes to give a little bit of character. You can also use them as risers. You can stack them and then add your decor on top to add just a lot of different dimension because you do want your decor to move across your table, not just be plain, you know, on one solid surface. During the cooler months, I always think it feels really warm and cozy to add candlelight or just various types of lighting around your room. Now I found these last year at Hobby Lobby. I love just the little leaf detail. They are gold, and I like to incorporate gold in with copper, kind of just a mixed metal. And so you can definitely style these on coffee table books and a vase full of florals. And then you have a pretty little vignette maybe on an end table. Another way I like to bring in lighting is by sourcing different shapes, like pumpkins, that are actually the shape of a votive. So you put a votive candle in here. These are great for shelves, across tablescapes. They just really add that twinkle and that coziness during dinnertime and the night hours. Another way I like to bring in different sources of lighting is with your accented pieces. So I love this one that it has some cutout detail and you can see the light down in there. And so when it's evening time, these just look so pretty. They kind of cast a different type of image on and around your room. It just makes the space just feel extra warm and cozy. All right, so since I'm sharing my storage methods, I thought I would go ahead and share where I keep all of my seasonal plates and dishes. So right here in this cabinet, I have most of our dishes. So let me just go ahead and show you what we have. Back here, we have some of these scalloped little plates, salad plates. I like to use a lot of salad plates and just switch them out. And that way you can get a different look without having to buy a complete set. So I have these. I also have the matching bowls in the back here. And then this section right here is most of the ones that I'll pull out for fall. All right, so down here, I do have some green plates. They could come out for maybe early fall. They would look great because they do have the green. Not sure, sometimes I use them more for like spring or transitional periods. I also have the olive green dishware, stoneware that was from Target. So here is the salad plate. I also have the dinner plates in the back. Also have these type of salad plates. So I can mix and match. I could put the green. I could actually just use some white. I could use brown plates. You could really mix and match this. Each of these have a different scene, but I really love these. I think they look a little bit like an antique plate. And I think they're going to look good with the new ones that I purchased from Hobby Lobby this year. So I'm excited to incorporate them. I also really love these. I think these were from Hobby Lobby as well, but they just have a simple weave pattern. And so that's really cute to incorporate. And then I also have these tidbit little dishes. And so you could definitely make a tablescape or an arrangement by just adding something here in the center. I think that makes a cute little display as well. I almost forgot. I also have these maple leaf dishes. These are really pretty to put on a tablescape or just place in the kitchen to bring out that beautiful leaf pattern. These are actually even trimmed and a nice little gold. So it just adds a really nice rich detail. All right. So let me go ahead and put this all away and we can pop on over into the office. And there, I want to show you a haul from Magnolia as well as just a few things that I did pick up new for fall this year. I'm super excited to share them with you. And of course, start decorating with them real soon. All right. So now we're all situated in our office and I wanted to share some of the things that I picked up from Magnolia. Now I purchased these when they were all on sale, but I have to be transparent and honest. A couple of these items surprised me. I should have known better. I usually look at the sizes, especially on Amazon, but for some reason I did not look and confirm the sizes of these. So when I got them, I was kind of shocked. So this first one is this cute little leaf. I think it's adorable, but I actually thought it was probably double the size. So when I unwrapped it, I was a little bit in shock, but it is really pretty. It has lots of detail and I know exactly where it is going and you'll have to stay tuned and it'll fit perfectly. So be back to see where this goes. Another gold piece that I'll just go ahead and get out of the way is this cute little easel. Again, I thought it was probably this tall and when I unwrapped it, it was little itty bitty. So I was a little bit surprised with its size as well, but I love that it is brass. You can move the pieces or the little stand here so you can really get a good angle on your artwork and frame. And because it is kind of heavy, I think it will be able to withstand a pretty large like art piece, but you know, I was surprised. So I thought I would share these pieces with you, maybe in hopes that you won't be surprised if you ordered them for your homes as well. Now I was super excited to unwrap this piece. So it's a cute little riser and I love the detailing. It kind of has like a brass, but it's an antique brass and then just look at that carving. Absolutely gorgeous. I love the rich tone in this piece and I'm hoping that it's a large enough that I can maybe put my utensil crock with utensils and salt and pepper. So that is one way that I'd like to use this. And so I'm super excited to maybe try that out. It would also look great on shelf styling. It'll give you that variation in height, which is real important with decorating. And again, that detail is so, so pretty and I'm really happy with this purchase. If you've been here a while, you know my love for wall art. I'd love to switch it out. I think it just really can transform your space. And if you purchase not as expensive artwork, you can do this change. So a lot of my pieces come from Hobby Lobby, but I thought I would splurge just a little bit and get something a little bit more expensive. And I think this really looks gorgeous. I think this could be used for everyday decorating, but it's also going to really coordinate well with my fall decor too. I love the green matting. And then again, they just have great detail with their woodwork and see the beading along the edges kind of has like a double matting and then the trees themselves kind of looks like it's on an antique paper. So there's just lots of detail here that I think that you don't get in the Hobby Lobby pieces, but you also aren't paying the same price, if you know what I mean. So I love this one. I'll probably use it year round and not sure where it's going to go, but I hope it goes somewhere for fall. And then lastly from Magnolia, I did purchase these really pretty tea towels. That's another little tip that I like to give is to switch out your tea towels, maybe on the front of your oven or your dishwasher door. We have a lot of sterile solid pieces that are in the kitchen. And when you soften them up with like a tea towel or maybe an oven mitt or potholder, that fabric kind of just softens the look. It makes the kitchen look a little bit more used and homey. So I love this one. I thought that the colors were gorgeous. Love the olive green. It has a little bit of kind of like mustardy yellow, and then it has this pretty burgundy, which is really, really popular for this year. I'm not so sure that I'll be bringing in a ton of burgundy. My colors are really bright and vibrant, and so I'm not wanting to have to transform or go out and buy all new. So I did incorporate and buy some new things that will help to bridge the gap between the trend of dark and moody to light and bright. So I hope that my upcoming series for fall decorating will be useful for you if you're in the same situation where you just really can't buy all new. You love what you have. You want to be a little bit on trend. Like I always say, you don't really want to be trendy. You want to bring in pieces that you love, that you want to bring back 20 years from now. And that's a lot of my decor is things that I started out with when Scott and I first started homemaking. And so I think, you know, that's important. You want a feeling, something nostalgic and memorable, but then also maybe transform it, use it a different way so that it's new and magical from year to year. Great, so the last few pieces came from various stores that we've already shopped together. I kind of wanted to share them with you so that you know where I'm with my decorating this fall. Sorry, I ran downstairs to the decor storage room and I'm out of breath. So give me a second. Alright, so now that I've caught my breath, like I mentioned when I was showing my dinnerware, I did go ahead and pick up a few pieces in this pattern that came from Hobby Lobby. I think it's so, so pretty. I think it has that vintage feel. And again, it's not screaming fall by any means, but it's just those rich colors that I can't wait to incorporate. So this will be one of the mugs that I'll probably display over on our coffee bar. And that video will be coming up, I think the first one. I'm super excited. I also picked up this cute little duck. I have a wooden duck that came from Amazon. I'll link it down below as well as this one. But this one came from Michaels. I think it's super, super cute. I think it's a mallard duck, I think. I'm not sure. But I am hoping that I can incorporate this into our floating shelves over on the coffee bar as well. But I couldn't resist him. And it's one piece that I picked up for the fall decorating this year. Now the new hearth and hand line, I absolutely loved it for fall. If I had a huge house, huge storage, and a huge budget, I would have probably did some major damage on that collection. But a few pieces that I wanted to share with you that I did pick up is this really pretty oven mitt. And then this one as well the potholder. Again, it has the brown, kind of burgundy brown with the olive green. So I think it'll really go nicely with the Magnolia tea towel set. And again, I'm just trying to add a little softness in the kitchen. And I love that this looks a little bit vintage. And then the last item that I'll show with you today is another piece from Michaels. This is a pillow. You guys, you got to stop me. I love this pillow. It kind of has that herringbone look. And it's just rich. And I think it just screams fall. It has it's reversible. So you can use it with the brown side here or you can use it with the brown here. I did only get one because I do like that collective look. It is trimmed and kind of like a dark, dark brown, maybe even black. So that's kind of what it looks like. But I thought this was a really nice pillow. It has a nice insert. A lot of times I buy the pillows and then remove the covers and put my own pillows. But this is one that I'm happy with. So can't wait to decorate with this on our sofa for fall. After sharing all of my new decor, I just couldn't resist playing around with some of it before we end today's video. So I'll bring you over to the kitchen and we'll create a cute little fall vignette for the kitchen counter. I hope you enjoy it. All right, friends. You may not realize, but I don't like map out my decorating room by room. I kind of will have a few things that I want to incorporate. I like to plug and play, move things around, pull things from different rooms, add them into a vignette, stand back and look. To be honest, I do a lot of standing back and looking, seeing what could be moved or situated to make it look better. And so I do a lot of off-camera work. And it may look super simple the next day because yes, I have it all ready to go, already figured out. So definitely give yourself grace when you're decorating. Give yourself time. I like to spend a day pretty much every room and get everything kind of like where I want it or at least a couple vignettes that I am certain of. And then I'll work the next day filming and fine-tuning everything. So, you know, like I said, about a couple days per room. That can take quite a few hours, even weeks to get your whole house done. So don't worry if you feel like you're behind. You're not. Social media always pushes things to where that you feel like you're behind when you're actually ahead. Like Hobby Lobby has Christmas out. Are we behind? No. Just there's always looking to the future, looking way, way advanced, getting prepared for those who like to plan out detail by detail. It's great to have things out. I also like to just pick up things that I love, things that I think that might not be there when I go back. And then when I do do the decorating process and decorate my rooms, that's when my creative juices really flow. So a lot of times I don't know what it's going to look like until I'm actually finished. And so I thought I would share that little detail with you. Maybe that would help you to just relax, have fun with your decorating and definitely join me back next time for the kickoff of my fall decorating series.
