What if an entire 482-square-foot home could fold up and fit inside a standard shipping container? Li Cheng created the Unfold House with that exact goal: making prefab housing easier and more affordable to manufacture, ship, and assemble almost anywhere. The $80,000 home arrives with its walls and roof folded inward and can be unfolded in just a few hours, revealing a surprisingly spacious interior with 12-foot ceilings, a full kitchen, king-size bed, bathroom, laundry, and large picture windows. By concentrating the plumbing, electrical, and other systems into a fixed central core while the rest of the structure collapses for transport, Lee hopes to dramatically reduce one of the biggest expenses associated with modular housing: shipping. It’s an ambitious concept designed around a much bigger mission—finding a new way to tackle the growing cost of housing.
