72 Hours in Arizona! (everything to do in Scottsdale)

We are on a cactus safari! Hey everybody and welcome to the U.S. of A. It's time to put our cowboy hats on and explore. I get to say yeehaw! Yeehaw! This week we're in Scottsdale, Arizona. And there's certainly no shortage of gems across the city. From the Old Town Strip to a stagecoach tour of the desert. Do you feel like you're in the Wild West right now? I've never done this before. Never. So saddle up and come for a ride. Let's just see how big these cactuses get. This is the tallest one I've ever seen. And make sure you stick around to the end to see if Hunter can face her fears and go in a hot air balloon ride at only five years old. Okay everyone, welcome to day one here in Scottsdale, Arizona. We are so excited to start exploring. And we thought, as it's day one, we are all a little bit jet lagged. What better way to get over jet lag than going for a little hike. Cool. And the landscape here is incredible. So different to Australia. Like in Australia we have deserts, but it looks so different. For us, they're red dirt and flat and not much to see. We're here, we're just surrounded by these rugged mountains. There are cactuses here that are like five times the size of me. So we're going to go out and go on a little hike. So everybody, just behind me is the McDowell mountains. And we've got a nice gentleman called Danny from Cliff Creek Outfitters. And he's going to give us some history of the trail. So we're not just doing a walk. It's an educational walk at the same time, which is good. Saying that McDowell was named after a general. Everything named after him. But if you guys are wondering, we're doing the Gateway Loop Trail. But 0.4 miles, we're going to take it slow. So look at some scenery we don't have back home. Like this humongous cacti in front of us. That's the tallest one I've ever seen. It's the tallest cactus you've ever seen? So first of all, people will walk by and all of a sudden they have a piece of this on them. What happened is, on the end of each one of those needles is a microscopic hook. So I'm going to lightly touch a needle to my skin. Oh wow. So what happens is, the hook breaks off. It's actually underneath my skin. So I pull, pull, pull. And the hook now just broke off underneath my skin. This is such a nice way to deal with the jet lag and kickstart our trip here. I mean, when you think of Arizona, it is this environment that you're seeing. And at the moment, the weather is absolutely beautiful. I think right now it's maybe 20, 23 degrees at the moment. So I'm just walking out, shorts and a t-shirt. We're out here in the nature. Smells incredible. Our guide's been incredible. He's been, I feel like if we just came out here by ourselves, we would have walked around, looked at some cactus, taken some photos and maybe read some of the information. He's showed us like some of the most dangerous cactus to come across, because that's always fun with the kids. Some of the animals that he's seen around here. That trail was perfect for families, especially our age of our kids, because they were able to just walk it in crocs, essentially. But it is a beautiful first sunset here. Good morning, everyone. Today is a big day for Hunter and I. We're waking up before the sun has even risen for Hunter to go on her very first hot air balloon ride. As a dad, I couldn't be more proud of her, as she's really nervous for her first time. As a parent, it's crazy to think of the first time you did something and then seeing your kid take that same step of bravery too. Oh no. It got cancelled. Like five minutes leaving the hotel. Hot air balloon flights are always contingent on weather conditions. So stay tuned to see if it happens. Okay, guys. This morning we're kicking things off at Arizona Boardwalk and we're doing two things that the kiddos love here. There is a huge aquarium and a butterfly sanctuary. It's so cute. Oh my goodness. Whoa. No, no, no. That's a tiny one. It's got a clown feet. And look, it's Nemo and Nemo's dad. Is it? Look, that's Nemo's dad. Oh, there they are. Come on. That's a tiny one. Wait. Okay, so we're actually not here for the aquarium. We specifically came here to check out the toilets because we heard that they have voted America's Best Restrooms. And I need to see this for myself. I need to see this for myself. Who needs to go to the toilet? Not that. You saw this? What's that? A shark. And we saw even more. No way. Like big fish. The friendly one? Yeah. I don't know if it's picking up on camera how many butterflies are in this room. Like, oh my gosh. Wait, this is the most butterflies I feel like I've seen in like a butterfly sanctuary before. Oh my gosh, this place is so cool. It like started off with this 15-minute 3D video all about the monarchs and how they migrate. I didn't even know about that. It was incredible. And then we went and looked at the hatchery where they all hatch from their cocoons. And then this is the final stage where they come out and there are thousands of butterflies. Oh, there's one on your back. There's one on your back. Hi. Hi, there's a butterfly on. Did it land on you? Other way. We've got to make a wish now. Oh my gosh, how gorgeous is this place? We've come out for some Mexican. It's called Diego Pops. It looks so nice. I love like the big pink sign outside. I just love Mexican food every time we come to the U.S. So I was like, the first place we have to eat out here has to be Mexican. Have you guys been keeping track of our adventures in 2026? We've been in Asia and Southeast Asia most of the year. We've had some good Asian food, but we've yet to have good Mexican food. So we are on foot for today's first lunch here in Arizona. Steve, the drink menu is on like a Mexican license plate. They have so many margaritas. They do prickly pear margarita and a cactus flower margarita. Watermelon mint margarita. Oh, I like the idea of that. I know. I feel like, should I get the prickly pear just because it's like cactuses? You know? She asked me what rim we wanted and I said, whatever you think's best. So I have a feeling yours looks like a spicy rim and mine's got a salt rim, but prickly pear and watermelon. All right, cheers. Yum. The last time I had one of these, we were in Arizona. Was it? Yeah, but we were in Sedona. Oh yeah. So maybe it's like an Arizona thing. Every time we come, I have to get a prickly pear margarita. All right, so I've gone for a watermelon lime. It feels like it's coming into summer here. So this sounds like a very refreshing option. That is so refreshing. All right, I need to try it with this. It looks like a spicy rim. The difference between the straw and the rim is like completely different. You meant to get like a little edge of it, right? Oh yum, I love it. Yours is so good. Wait, if you come here, get the watermelon. It is delicious. Oh yeah, she had the lemonade. She said it was really good. She said it was sweet yet sour, which I said is what a lemonade should taste like. Have you ever heard of a Brussels sprout taco? I'd never seen that on a menu ever. I was like, I need to try that. I'm one of those people who loves a Brussels sprout. That looks like a kid's worst nightmare, Brussels sprout. What do you think? Come try ordered Brussels sprouts tacos. And then we also got a bunch of shrimp tacos. I think we got a bit excited here because then we also got two salads. All right, cheers. Brussels sprout taco. Oh, it looks so good. Alrighty, I need 30 year old Jessie's review and seven year old Jessie's review. I'm pretty sure I like Brussels sprouts at seven. I got you onto the Brussels sprouts. I'll give it seven out of 10. I think it needs a little bit more flavor. Or maybe it's the corn tortilla. I'm more used to like the wheat. To be honest, seven out of 10 for a Brussels sprout taco. Should I try one of these shrimp ones? These look so good. Oh, look at this. Avocado, prawns, cabbage, and the sauce. Okay, this looks like my kind of taco. Let's give it a try. Wow. What is that sauce that's on there? That is so good. Nine out of 10. I feel like if I got the Brussels sprout on a wheat taco, it would have been nine out of 10 as well. Alrighty, everybody. Straight after lunch, we have come to do probably the coolest thing ever. We've come into a place called Rancher Hat Bar, which was like a block away from where we were having lunch. And Jess and Hunter are going to be making their own custom cowboy hat. The entire process is custom. This is a huge one. There is so many choices. Of course, you have like different styles, what material they made with. The whole process is custom. So you can come down here. You can essentially pick if you want. Sew it into it. Just this walkway is so cool. And then they have this whole section. So if you wanted to put some like dry plants in there, you could. I feel like I need to brush up on my cowboy movies before I decide what to go through. You can also put like different chains on there, different materials. And then the whole process is done at the Rancher Bar in front of you, which is so cool. Like just look at some of the things you can put in here. He kind of looks like Pharrell. So I got this. Wow. That looks cool. And this. I like that. That was such a unique experience. I feel like coming to Arizona, choosing out your very own cowboy hat. And this is something I'm going to keep forever. And later on in the week, we are going to a ranch. And I thought, what a place to wear it. And how cute. Hunter and I have a little matching hat. And I feel like that's going to be a memory she's going to keep forever, isn't it, Hunter? Your very first cowboy hat. No, and Hunter kept choosing the cutest things. I was like, I'm just going to copy Hunter. She kept choosing the best things. But I love how she's got a little guitar pick and everything. Oh yeah, and the feather. I was like, if I was going to a Taylor Swift concert this year, this would have been coming for me. Cole has fallen asleep. And we just saw down the road, there was this art installation. Kind of interactive. And Hunter absolutely loves art at the moment. If you ask what she wants to be when she grows up, she says artiste. Not artist. Artiste. So we've walked down. Cole is asleep. And we're just going to be walking through all the rooms. And as you can see, they're kind of interactive. You can walk in. And you can also be a little bit noisy, which is nice. You know, some museums seem to be quiet with the kids. But these are like perfect for little ones. So we're going to go and explore while Cole has his sleep. You guys found the best seat? Yeah. My life is weird. Does it make you feel funny? Yeah. Whoa, Dad, look how cool it looks. It looks so cool. You love this kind of thing, don't you, honey? I think you should be the art. Hunter is one with the art. Whoa. Oh, that looks so cool. Cole is just over there in the pram having a nap. And we're watching the slideshow. Honey, imagine he wakes up. He'll be like, wow. And we're watching the slideshow. Come in, guys. Come in. It looks so cool. Come in. Whoa. Look at this. It's up. Look, it's Dad. Whoa. Look, you're in it. Wave both your arms. Look at my face. The rest is not. Later. So we've come to dinner to Craft 64. And the reason we came here is we heard they do amazing pizzas. And they actually hand make all their mozzarella and all their dough here fresh daily. And also, when I saw the drink menu, all the drinks are made here in Arizona. So many from Scottsdale. They have, like, so many craft beers. Our cider that we just got. Did you get the apple cider? I got the apple pie. Oh, yeah. It's called the apple pie cider. And it's from Phoenix. Want to cheers? Boom. Cheers. Oh, my gosh. It tastes like an apple pie. Really? What? Oh, my gosh. That does taste like apple pie. It does. This would be a great drink in Australia for Christmas. OK, we had to order the bruschetta because I wanted to try this homemade mozzarella cheese. Oh, my goodness. I'm going to have a bite with it. Are you ready? It looks like homemade bread, too. Ready? It's fresh. Fresh? Bruschetta always tastes so fresh. That is delicious. I forgot how big the portions are here. We also got the cheesy bread. And this isn't even, like, the pizza hasn't even come yet. We ordered way too much food today. Are you kidding? Oh, my gosh. Look how good this pizza looks. That looks so good. When it's, like, double decked on top of your plate. You just know you've ordered too much. Yum. That looks good. And look at the base. It looks good. All right, Carl. Thumbs up or down on the pasta? Oh, thumbs up. Thumbs up. One thumb or two thumb? Oh, you know if he likes it if he's dancing. Double thumb? Oh, it looks so good. Wow. And it's got the homemade mozzarella on it. Yum. Stop. I feel like we're about to make everyone hungry. It's so good. It looks so good. When was the last time we had pizza? Because we've been in Asia for so long. This is so good. She wants to show you how much she likes the pizza. Are you ready? Oh, wow. It must be good. But I need to taste it as well. Wait. That's like a 10 out of 10 pizza. Oh, God. This is yum. Why is it on your side of the table? Can I put it under my side of the table? No. Quick. Rubber handle. It's pretty good. Maybe we should go back to the hotel and go for a swim. Should we? Yeah. Do you want to go back and have a swim? Okay, we are now back at our resort and we are staying at the most stunning place. We are at Adaro in Scottsdale. It's about 25 minutes out of town, but I feel like that makes it extra special. We are surrounded by the desert, surrounded by the mountains. The sunsets here are unbelievable. And something that's really, really cool is this hotel is in a dark sky zone, which means tonight we should be able to see the stars so clearly. But this place also has an incredible pool. So this afternoon, we're going to have a pool day. It is so nice to hop in the pool at this time of day. It's so interesting. Here in Scottsdale, the mornings are chilly and then it ramps up to get warmer. Still decent weather. But it's so funny. At like 4, 5 p.m. is the peak of the day and that's when you'd assume it would go down. So coming in at like 5 o'clock is incredible weather. There's like three pools here. We're in the family pool and it's just so beautiful. Like you're in a desert or an oasis and there's so much water flowing. Like there's waterfalls everywhere. You've got the cactus. They've designed it really well. But I think everyone is going to enjoy the pool. We just had dinner at Silo, which is their local restaurant. It was so good. I'm so full. We had salmon and ice cream and it was delicious. It was so tasty. And then just watching the views because the sun actually sets behind us. So you could just see like almost the mountain range appearing in front of us with these pink hues. So beautiful. Perfect spot. The sun sets here. The best. We wanted to eat outside because the weather was so good. Had a little Aperol Spritz because it felt like summer. And then we've just come to a place called The Lawn, which can you see? Looks so beautiful. Looks so nice. And there's this little gentleman. With a telescope. A really big telescope. Like, it looks expensive. And I think because we're in the dark zone, we're just waiting for the stars to pop up. Oh, I actually see one already. Oh, you do? He'll probably tell us. It's probably a planet. We're probably going to learn all this stuff now. Is it Venus? Because it's the first one you see, isn't it? Let's go ask our little man. Our guide. And it's just on the property. We walk like 10 steps from Silo and then, you know, once we're done, we just walk into our room. Which is so good. So good. Can you see that bright light? That's the planet Venus. Have you learned about that in school? I found my star. Which star? That was my birth star. Yeah, like, you know, they only appear in your birth month. Those ones there. Daddy's one Venus guy right there. What? Where is it? Highly. 2 October. Maybe that one? That's your one. Gemini. Good morning, everybody. It was so nice seeing the stargazing last night that we decided to have breakfast at the hotel at Silo. Had some amazing pancakes and oats. Perfect to kick start today. Because we're doing another adventurous day. First stop is the desert botanical gardens. I've been to botanical gardens before, but I don't think I've been to one that's so prickly. There's just so many species of cactus. And seeing as we're in Arizona, we got to see a lot of cactus while we're here. Because we just don't really have them back home. Daddy, there's a huge cactus. Where? Behind you, Dad. Oh, my goodness. Alrighty, let's see what I can share with you guys that we've learned being at the botanical gardens. So, if you didn't know, Scottsdale is in the Sonoran Desert. And here is a great way to see all the different cactus or the cacti. There's over 50,000 just in this area. And so many species. Like, look at this one compared to these ones. Like, these are just sitting next to each other. And then even the large ones over here are all just in front of me. There's so many different species. And the cool thing is these cacti can live up to 150 years. Like, look at this big one just here. Most of them here at the botanical gardens are about 50 to 70 years. But, wow. It is such a good spot to come if you want that desert vibes. I love your binoculars. The kids found binoculars in the gift shop. And now they are on a cactus safari. We're on a cactus safari. I wanted to show you what I got because whenever we go traveling, I love to collect one Christmas ornament and one magnet. And this place delivered the goods. Look how adorable this Christmas ornament is. It's a little cactus. If you want anything cactus themed, that is the shop to go. They even sold seeds to grow your own cactus. And then here's my little magnet. How cool is this? We've just come down to Old Town. We're going to have lunch here. But this place looks so cool. Like, super old western vibes. It's really cool. So many little shops. I see a lot of places, you know, selling the cowboy hats and all the fun souvenirs. It's a very, very cool spot. Alrighty. We're walking through Old Town. It's the middle of the day. So we were like, what can cool us down? And we come to the sugar bottle. It says, Welcome to the Sugar Bowl. The day before Christmas in 1958 was Sugar Bowl's glorious opening day. So it opened on Christmas Eve, 1958. It is older than Milan Grandado, this place. Friendly persons who own it and run it are the very same people who that day begun it. So the same people who bought it all that time ago still owns it now. And it literally feels like we've stepped back in time to an old timey American diner. Or an ice cream parlor. I don't know what I ordered. I think I was just like, wow, they have so much on here. This is the tin sundae. So it has nuts, some cream, cherry on top, of course. Ice cream. Wow. That is so delicious. And the serving size. Whatever is the word directly after generous, that's what this is. These are the biggest ice creams and sundaes and brownies I've ever seen. What is this? What did you order that's bigger than your head? I don't even know what this is. Oh my goodness. Thank you so much. This looks so old. Look, you pop the coin in and it drops down. Ready? So this is like an old rock. Is that cool? What was that? All right, this afternoon we've headed out to a ranch. So I thought, what a way to debut our cowboy hats. Then at a ranch. Yeehaw. Is the expert coming yet? Yeah, you're going to be so good at it. You're randomly so good. Boss level with Hunter there. You're close. Oh, you almost had it. Stop it. Stop being good. Boss level. Pop on the hat. I got the hat on. Put on the hat. All right. One and done. Oh, stop. Where are you going? You have to pat the piggy. See? No, I am not. I am not. I can see why he gets nervous, though. He's literally in line with the goat's heads. Hunter, are you the goat whisperer? He literally just came and put his head on me. It's like, I just want a mummy scratch. How cool is this? So this place is known for their sunset horseback riding. But you have to be six. Our little ones are five and three, so they do stagecoach riding. And here it comes. Look at this. Do you feel like you're in the Wild West right now? I've never done this before. Never. Look at this. So Hunter, before cars, this is how people went around. Mom, Dad, little ones, this is Uncle Steve. And then you have Dan and Prince as your horses. Go ahead, amigo. Yeah, baby. There you go, lovely lady. All right. All aboard. Even more of a reason to have those hats now. I feel like this is the perfect first day for these hats to exist. Mom, where are we going? Where are we going? I think we're going for a ride all around the ranch. Wow. Definitely gives you the perfect feeling of what it would have been like in the West, going around in a stagecoach. They surprisingly go slower than I thought. I don't know, maybe we're just on a leisurely stroll. But in terms of space, they look huge compared to what I was expecting. But as you guys can see just over here, we are going past the cactus, the mountain range in front of us. The sun is starting to set. This is actually such a unique experience. So these were pretty popular around the Midwest in about the 1850s. And this was technically their public buses before train, like the big railroad was built in America. Of course, stagecoaches did come from England, from London. That's where they were really popularized before, of course, the car was invented. And it's pretty tiring for the horses. So about 10 to 15 miles, there would be things called relay stations, and they'd switch out the horses so they could continue on their journey. If you really want to live out your Wild West fantasies, they have a pretend shotgun. If you guys have heard the terminology riding shotgun, where you're right next to the driver, it's because in the West, someone literally would be holding a shotgun to fend off robbers because a lot of times it was banks moving gold. I honestly would never have had it on my bucket list, but when I saw they did it and the kids were too young for horse riding, I was like, this rounds up our ultimate Arizona trip. This is just so unique. Alrighty, everybody. Today is Mother's Day. So we've loved our stay here at Adaro. It's a little bit out of town. So if you guys want that like secluded, beautiful mountain views, relaxing vibes, this is the spot for you. However, we're going to be moving closer to town. We're going to a family resort for our last few days here in Scottsdale for water slides, pool, and making the most of Mother's Day today. What do we see out here, guys? Oh, that looks amazing. Oh, how good is this, Colby? Who wants to have a pool day? Me. You? Me. Stevie, this is kind of cool. Happy Mother's Day. For Mother's Day, we've got a little cabana at the pool at the hotel. We have never done this before ever. So we came in and we were just expecting maybe some like deck chairs. There's a full-blown TV. We have our own fridge. Isn't this so cool? Fully stocked with waters. It's like a safe if you want to leave your valuables in there. There's menus to the two restaurants and you can order anything you want and they'll bring it to the cabana. It's like a little shaded area. They have a fan that also turns into a mist fan. So I feel like all day today for Mother's Day, we're going to just be swimming in the pool. He said the water slide's about to open and then we can just come and chill here in between swimming. I don't think we're going to be using our rooms today. I think we're just going to be living into this cabana. So the cabana overlooks the like little water canal. Yeah, there's all these huge koi fish here. Going to do a Mother's Day cheers. What did you order? A watermelon refresher. Also, can I just say, Stephen is trying to convince me that everyone called CJ, that everyone in America called CJ is the acronym of Carl Johnson. Please tell me if this is true. Are all CJ's Carl Johnson? 100%. If you're Carl Johnson, please leave a comment below. Our server's called PJ and we're trying to work out, what's his name? Peter Jack? Paul Johnson? And then Stephen just goes, well if it's CJ, we know it's Carl Johnson because all CJ's Carl Johnson. So I need to know this. But anyway, food to the cabana. How's that refresher? It's yum. It's refreshing. It's refreshing? Yeah. Very memorable Mother's Day. I'm happy. It's all connected to the sandbar which if you're not in a cabana, you can still order from there. We had some delicious from tacos. We've been living off tacos this whole week. This is good. This is so nice. Look at the palm trees. There's a beach with sand. This is the family pool as I'm sure you guys can tell. There's a full blown water slide behind me. Like a three story water slide. Are we doing it? Let's do it. Good morning everybody and welcome to pretty much one of our last days here in Scottsdale and Arizona. We thought let's do one last bit, head out to the desert because the views are just so incredible. And we decided to jump on a jeep tour by Scottsdale Adventure Tours and we're essentially in this wicked open jeep. Head out into the Tauntaun Desert. I hope I'm pronouncing that right. And we're going to go see some giant cacti and learn all about it. But how wicked is this? We've just driven out. We've been on it for about an hour now, taking it all in and we've done our first stop. Look at these beautiful views. Are you touching the cactus? Just like that. Just like that in the middle? I'm a little bit scared. Can I try? So I put it, do I put it here? There? Yes. Out of all the ways that we've explored the desert since coming here in Scottsdale I feel like the jeep tour, that is hands down my favourite. It was so fun. Especially once we started off-roading once we got into the forest. It's like bumping up and down, learn so much about the cactuses, about the wildlife. And now we've come to a place called the MIM. It's called the Musical Instrument Museum and here they have instruments from over 200 countries. I feel like it's such a unique place to come and show the kids. So we're going to learn all about the instruments. I think it's a really nice thing to do. It's summer here in Scottsdale middle of the day. A museum would be great. Also hear me out guys here for the music museum for the kids but then I realised this is the number one rated attraction here in Scottsdale. Legit we looked on Google and it had like a 4.9 that alone has piqued my interest. I am now very much on board to checking this place out. This is actually so cool. So we just explored some of the downstairs and we just, what was that instrument called? Apollonia Apollonia? Or the orchestra It all played by itself He's loving the headphones But upstairs is the world area. So you can go through all the different continents all around the world and look at all the instruments. I think it's going to be super interesting Yes Where do you want to go first? Africa? Europe? America? Oceania? Asia? Let's try and find some Australian instruments. What's really cool is we have these headphones on and it's all proximity so you can just walk up to the instrument and we'll start playing. So we went into like the famous area it's one of the first exhibitions. You can see like Elvis' guitar and it's quiet and then you walk up to it and it instantly plays which is so cool and you can just walk around it like fades in and out. It's done really well. Hey look here Papa's back What's this sound? I'm a horsey So finally at the end of our trip we were able to get the hot air balloon rescheduled So it was finally time to see if Hunter would put on her brave face and face her fears Are you ok? Yes Are you so excited? Yeah It's really cold Come huggle It's 5.40 in the morning Do you know I got you out of bed two hours ago Are you excited or are you nervous? No. You're feeling no? Have you got little butterflies in your tummy? No No you don't? That's good that means you're excited You know I am so proud of you. Before you were born, mummy would go on adventures like this and we were so excited when you were born and today is the day that we get to do those adventures and you've got to be one of the youngest 5 year olds ever going hot air balloon I'm so proud of you Let's warm you up This guy is going to put on a big fan and it's going to blow it up and it's going to get you to the biggest balloon you've ever seen and then guess what it's going to use a little bit of fire and it's going to go and it's going to warm us up Yeah.
