For nearly 12 years, Vanessa Antonino wondered the same thing.
Where was Floor? Was she safe? Did someone take care of her?
Or had the little dog she loved disappeared from her life forever?
Vanessa had no way of knowing that more than a decade later, after thousands of days apart,
one unexpected phone call would give her an answer she had almost stopped believing was possible.
Years earlier, Vanessa was going through one of the hardest periods of her life.
She didn't have a stable home and was living in and out of her car.
But through all of it, she had Floor. Floor was a tiny chihuahua.
And to Vanessa, she wasn't simply a pet. She was family.
Vanessa refused to give her up, even when life became difficult.
While she worked, Floor sometimes stayed inside the car because Vanessa had nowhere else safe
to leave her. Then one day, Vanessa returned to the car, and Floor was gone.
Just an empty car where her dog should have been.
Vanessa searched for her, but she had very little money and very few resources.
Animal shelters had no answers. There were no sightings that led anywhere.
Floor seemed to have simply vanished.
Years later, people involved in the case would say they believed she may have been stolen.
But Vanessa couldn't know that at the time. All she knew was that her little dog was missing,
and the guilt stayed with her. She wondered if she could have done more.
She wondered where Floor had ended up. Most of all, she hoped that wherever Floor was,
someone was being kind to her.
Months turned into years. Vanessa's life changed.
She had children. They grew up hearing stories about the tiny chihuahua their mother had once
loved. Floor became almost like a missing member of the family. A dog the children had never really
known, but somehow still knew about. Vanessa never forgot her.
And as the years passed, another painful thought began entering her mind.
Chihuahuas can live a long time, but not forever.
Eventually, Vanessa started wondering whether Floor might already be gone.
Nearly twelve years passed. Then, hundreds of miles of memories away from the day Floor
disappeared, severe weather hit parts of Indiana. After the storms, a volunteer from Louisiana
had traveled to the area to help with recovery efforts. And while there, the volunteer noticed
something on the side of the road. A tiny dog. She was old. She was stranded. And somehow,
she had survived. The volunteer rescued her and brought her to the Griffith,
Indiana Animal Control and Shelter. There, workers did something routine that would
completely change Vanessa's life. They scanned the dog for a microchip, and she had one.
The information connected to the chip was old. But volunteers working with a group called
Microchip Hunters began digging deeper. They specialize in cases exactly like this,
tracking down owners, even when years have passed, and contact information is outdated.
Eventually, they found a name. Vanessa Antonino.
Then Vanessa's phone rang. Is this Vanessa? Yes. We have Floor.
For a moment, Vanessa didn't understand. Floor? She hadn't heard that name spoken to
her like that in years. And then it hit her. The dog she had lost nearly 12 years earlier
was alive. Not only alive, she had been found. And she was coming home. Animal shelters in
Indiana and Illinois quickly worked together to make the reunion happen. A volunteer even
dropped everything and made the drive to help bring Floor back. One day later, Vanessa finally
walked into the shelter. And there she was. Older now. Around 16 years old. Her face had
changed. Her body had aged. Twelve years had passed for both of them. But she was still Floor.
Vanessa looked at her little dog and immediately broke down. She cried as she held her again
after more than a decade apart. She was back with me. Vanessa later said,
A piece of my heart was back with me. But there was still one more reunion waiting.
Vanessa brought Floor home to meet the children who had grown up hearing about her.
The dog they knew only through their mother's stories was suddenly standing right in front
of them. And when they saw her, they had only one thing to say. Our sister is home.
For Vanessa, the reunion was joyful. But bittersweet. Because 12 years is a long time.
She missed nearly Floor's entire life. She missed watching her grow older. Floor missed growing up
beside Vanessa's children. Those years can never be returned. But somehow, against extraordinary
odds, they were given something else. One more chapter together. Floor had
disappeared when Vanessa had almost nothing. Twelve years later. An unlikely chain of events
had to happen perfectly. A storm had to leave Floor where someone could find her.
The right volunteer had to notice her. Floor's microchip had to still be readable.
Someone had to investigate information more than a decade old. And people in multiple
shelters had to work together to bring her home. One of the volunteers later described it perfectly.
The stars aligned for this. Because after nearly twelve years apart,
Vanessa finally got to hold the dog she thought she had lost forever.
And Floor finally found her way home.
