Security has been tightened around the ward where Sri Lankan parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa
is being held at the Colombo Remand Prison.
The Department of Prison says additional security measures have been put in place in and around
the ward where the Member of Parliament is currently in remand custody.
Sri Lankan parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa is the eldest son of former President Mahinda
Rajapaksa.
He's currently being held at the Colombo Remand Prison.
Rajapaksa is also a senior figure in the opposition Sri Lanka Poducana Perumana.
He was arrested on September 4th by the Commission to investigate allegations of bribery or corruption,
also known as CIA BOK.
The arrest took place over alleged bribery linked to a Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus aircraft
deal.
Investigators are probing allegations that Rajapaksa received around 100 billion Sri
Lankan rupees in connection with the procurement of Airbus aircraft during his father's presidency.
Namal has denied any wrongdoing.
He was questioned by the CIA BOK for more than five hours before being arrested and
produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
The court ordered him to remain in remand custody until September 18th as the investigation
continues.
Authorities have tightened security around the ward where Rajapaksa is being held.
The Department of Prisons says special security arrangements have been put in place around
his ward.
Rajapaksa has also been given permission to receive cooked meals from home following a
request made on his behalf.
The case has added to political tensions in Sri Lanka with opposition alleging that the
arrest is politically motivated while authorities continue their anti-corruption investigation.
