Why Lin-Manuel Miranda Is No Longer The Lead Vocalist On A Key Moana Song

My conversation with Lin is one that hasn't stopped since we met in May of 2002. So we're so deep into it. We're talking about everything all the time. The fact that we got to come together on this one, this was something that he did on his own when we were making Hamilton. And so now for us to be able to be sitting on set, to be planning and plotting, to show him cuts, to be dreaming of what this could be, he's such an essential collaborator for me. And he was there in prep, he was there when we were shooting, and he was around in post. And the new song came from conversation. We thought, all right, is there anything in the body of the film that feels like an opportunity? And we feel all the songs were in the right place. And then we started looking to the end credits. And we thought, what do we not have? What is this film not yet giving us? And we thought, something between Maui and Moana. And then, wait a minute, what if it's both Moana's? And once we said that out loud, I just saw his eyes get wide. And I thought, I've seen that look before. And I knew what was going to happen. And that's this terrific new song. Yeah, I mean, it's beautiful, the song. I'm so glad that it's in there. I also want to ask, what was the decision? Was it Lin's decision or your decision to remove him from the lead vocals in We Know The Way, right? So he's no longer in there. So I want to ask, what was up with that? I mean, every decision we make is when we make together. What I will say is, Lin wasn't initially going to be in that version in 2016. But he sang the demo. And I thought, oh, that's really good. And that's Lin. And we love Lin. Let's leave him in. So that's how that happened and obviously became part of the iconography of that. This felt like an opportunity to have a Polynesian voice there. And so Lin was the first person to say, yes, let's go do that. And we found an amazing singer to join us, Moses. So that's the voice that you hear in that vocal.
