Why do deer begin shedding their antlers at the hottest time of the year? At first glance, it seems to contradict nature. Yet in traditional Chinese thought, this marks one of nature's most important turning points.

In this lesson, we explore how the Summer Solstice (夏至, Xiàzhì) reveals the Chinese understanding of Yin and Yang. As Yang reaches its peak, Yin quietly begins to grow. Ancient observers recognized this transition not only through the changing length of the day, but also through the rhythms of deer, cicadas, and even the medicinal herb Bàn Xià (Pinellia).

Rather than viewing these as isolated natural phenomena, traditional Chinese culture understood them as expressions of a single underlying pattern shared by heaven, earth, living creatures, and human life.
