CAPE TOWN City Drive: A Look at this EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL SOUTH AFRICAN CITY
Cape Town is one of the most-visited cities in South Africa. It is rich with history and tradition and has a diverse population. Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company, located in the Netherlands, arrived in 1652 to establish a midway stop for ships travelling to the East, and this is how Cape Town was founded.
The setting was spectacular, on well-watered, lush land beneath Table Mountain's steep slopes. The indigenous peoples offered cattle but not labour, so the corporation imported slaves, primarily from East Africa, Madagascar, and the Bay of Bengal region. Slaves brought with them a piece of their culture and, in the case of Muslims from the East Indies, their faith.
Mixed-race marriages occurred, but strong racial and ethnic features persisted. The French deployed a garrison in 1781 to assist the Dutch in defending the city from British attack, and their presence affected local architecture and culture. The British occupation in the nineteenth century brought new parliamentary and judicial principles, as well as freedom for slaves. Cape Town served as the entry point for Europeans into South Africa's interior, and tight relations with continental Europe were maintained.
The climate in Cape Town is comparable to that of California and the Mediterranean. The winter season, which lasts from May to September, is typically damp and windy. The summer season lasts from November through March.
Cape Town is a city and seaport in South Africa, as well as the provincial capital of the Western Cape province. The city is located near the northern extremity of the Cape Peninsula, approximately 30 miles or 50 kilometres north of the Cape of Good Hope. Cape Town is considered the country's "mother city" since it was the site of the first European settlement in South Africa.
