FALL GARDEN - EASY WAY TO PLANT AND GROW THESE 9 SEEDS_2.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Back Garden Yard channel. Today we're starting to plant the fall garden. So real quickly let me show you what we're planting for the fall garden. These are the very large radishes, the Asian radishes that you might see in the Asian store sometimes. Sometimes they'll grow about a foot long. This is Napa cabbage. They use that to make kimchi and it's also just good to steam and eat it. And then of course I've got the bok choy. I always like to plant bok choy. And then we've got over here we've got leaf mustard. Once again this is an Asian variety of leaf mustard. Then over here I've got tender green mustard and I've also got the India Florida broadleaf mustard which is my favorite mustard to plant. We also have mescaline lettuce. It's a mixture of a lot of tender green lettuces. Then I've got this is one of my favorites right here. That's the red romaine lettuce. Then I've got two different kinds of kale. I've got premier kale and I've got curled kale. And then of course beets, a great source of antioxidants. And I've got the early wonder beets. And all this will grow this fall and make a great garden and just keep you full and healthy. So that's what we're doing. And today I'm preparing a spot to plant the Napa cabbage and the large radishes. And so that's what we're going to do today is prepare those and I'm planting it in the heat wave. And when you plant in the heat wave you've got to water about twice a day to make sure the little tender seed seedlings, you got to make sure the little tender seedlings don't just dry up and evaporate. So what I did was I took my rototiller and I plowed up this area over here by my strawberries and in between the onions. And then I raked all the sand and soil up to the top and then I went through it and I cut a row right down the middle. That way I've got them raised up so that when the rains come it won't wash them out. The water will come down this row and these will be sitting up here. But I don't have them too high because I'm going to have to bring soil from down here up around the plants when they come up to support them. So you don't want them too high. And then the next thing I've got to do is I've got to take the fertilizer. I've got to go ahead and work that in and then I'm going to have to water it in and get this soil good and wet before I put the seeds in. Normally you can water after you put the seeds in but this soil is so dry that if I put the seeds in and then water up top I'll either wash them out with heavy watering or it'll just turn into thick heavy mud and they might not come up. So let me go ahead and get the fertilizer that I'm going to use. And I'm going to use chicken compost and 10-10-10. Those of y'all that are familiar with my channel know that's my two favorite things to garden with and most of the time that's enough to make a great crop. So let's go get it. So here's the I Can't Believe It's Chicken Compost and I get this out of South Carolina and it's really really good. And it's very well ground up. It's not got all these wood chips in it like all the rest of it. It has some wood chips but it's one of the better products. Of course it's more expensive than the black cow and the evergreen but I think it's worth it. So let's pour some in. So now I'm going to go down the row with this and I'm going to try to make a thin layer down the middle of each row. So you can see these are the rows I'm going to use for cabbage and I'm just going to take it and put it down like this. So there's one row. Here's the second row and then here's the third row. Just a nice layer so the seeds are right next to the chicken manure and give them a good boost to start with. Okay of course I'm not going to show the whole thing. Let me go ahead and finish these rows and then I'll go get the 10-10-10 and we'll come back and do it. And now we're going to scatter the 10-10-10 down the rows and that'll be all the fertilizer they'll probably need the whole season. So if you put the chicken manure down first it's a lot easier to see how much of this 10-10-10 you're putting it on. And I put it on fairly thick. You just want to put it on so that you can cover it completely and then we're going to work this in and water it in and then we'll plant our seeds. So now you can see how I've got the fertilizer and the chicken manure together in the row and now I'm going to use a garden rake and I'm just going to literally rake it in just like this. Just so it's down below the surface and won't wash off when I water. So I'm gonna have to go down all the rows just you know two or three times and you're mixing this manure and this fertilizer. Let's go to the next row I'll show you. Same thing and we want to mix it just like this and it's okay to push on the row and make it a little bit deeper because once again we don't want it to wash out when I water it. But you literally want to have a row inside a row here just like this. Okay so I'll go ahead and finish this and I'll come back and show you how I water it. So people that watch my channel often they know that I like to use rainwater to start seeds but when there is no rainwater you use what's available and that's hose water. So what I do is I set the setting on this hose. It's going to make a flat spray that'll just fill up the middle of these rows like this. And then I'm going to go down the rows and I'm going to fill them up and that's washing in the fertilizer but it's going to give plenty of water down in there for the new seeds and roots to go down to. So I'll go all the way down the row and I'll go all the way down this row and of course all the rows literally flooding it because now I can do this because I haven't planted the seeds yet. And that's the key is you want to flood this here but if you had the seeds in there you'd be washing them up messing everything up. So we're going to do this before we plant the seeds. Okay so now we're ready to plant the seeds. So what we're going to do is open up a pack of Napa cabbage. There's the Napa cabbage and I've always found it easier when you're planting just to pour them into a little container. All right so these are the big Asian radishes and once again they're not really pink they've been coated but that keeps the insects from eating them. Okay so we're going to go ahead and we're going to plant we'll go ahead and just plant some cabbage and I'll show you how I do that and you notice they're kind of small seeds so let's go out and give it a try. So these three rows we decided we're going to plant in cabbage and I've got another pack of seeds of course. Two of the rows are kind of short and the other one is even longer but I'm not going to plant the whole row I'm just going to show you how I do this. So we want two packs of seeds to plant all three rows of so we've got to kind of space them out. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to grab a seed and I'm going to put it right here. I'm going to get another one and put it about four or five inches away and then I'm going to continue to do this. See if I can get a close-up of how those look. So there's the seed there's the next one here goes the next one and here goes the next one. You see they're all three or four or five inches apart and that's the way you want to plant them and then what I'll do is I'll grab some loose soil right here out of the where I didn't get water on it and I'm just going to cover them up and just cover them up with maybe a quarter inch of soil that's all and this is why since you're covering them with such little amount of soil this is why you don't want to have to do a heavy watering once you get them planted. So that's the way I'm going to do the entire three rows that's the same way I'm going to do the radishes it's mainly the way I do most of my fall garden plants. So anyway that's the way we're going to plant this fall garden and then when I finish this I'll come back and lightly water this in just to get it wet because it's already wet down below it and that's the way I do it to keep from washing the seeds around and keep from washing them up and I'll be back in one week to show you the results of these plantings and then you'll know whether or not it worked. Of course it will work hopefully I can keep them watered during the whole week here so that they don't come up and then dry up and die. So I haven't got plans to go out of town so I hopefully can keep these watered and we'll have some good cabbage and some radishes to show you and of course in the meantime I'll be planting the rest of the seeds I just showed you the lettuce and the mustard and everything else into the other sections of the garden.
