How To Dress "Classy" As A Man (Stop Dressing Like A Boy)

At the end of the day, dressing classy isn’t about being rich, wearing designer clothes, or trying to impress everybody. It’s about being intentional. It’s about understanding that the way you present yourself communicates something before you ever open your mouth. Whether you’re 25 or 55, there are some simple style rules that will instantly upgrade the way you look—and, more importantly, the way people perceive you. Looking elegant and classy is about paying attention to the details, being intentional, and presenting yourself like a man who takes himself seriously. Here are simple style strategies to look more sophisticated:

1. Fit Is More Important Than Price - I don’t care if you’re wearing a $20 T-shirt or a $200 designer shirt. If the $20 shirt fits your body better, you’re going to look better. Understand how your clothes should fit and be tailored. Fit is king.

2. Wear Fewer Logos - The less branding, the better. Huge logos, loud graphics, and excessive branding can cheapen your look. Clean, simple clothing is more timeless, sophisticated, and elegant.

3. Build Your Wardrobe Around Neutral Colors - Tan, brown, gray, charcoal, black, white, navy, and even olive are your style secret weapons. Neutral colors coordinate effortlessly, which means you can mix and match practically everything in your wardrobe while still looking amazing.

4. Upgrade Your Fabrics - Quality fabrics and interesting textures automatically make an outfit look more luxurious. Wool, merino wool, suede, linen, cotton, and denim can add depth and sophistication without making it look like you’re trying too hard. The fabric can make even a simple outfit look expensive.

5. Upgrade Your Shoes - Beat-up running shoes can destroy an otherwise decent outfit. Instead, go for minimal sneakers, loafers, Chelsea boots, chukkas, or other clean, sophisticated options. Your shoes are one of those details that can separate classy from dorky dad in about two seconds.

6. Stop Dressing Like You’re Still in College - There was a time when you could get away with graphic T-shirts, baseball hats, baggy shorts, bad sneakers, and sloppy outfits. That time was when you were a kid. As you mature as a man, your style needs to mature with you. If you’re 37 and still dressing like you’re 18, there’s a disconnect. Your appearance sends a message, and whether you like it or not, people are paying attention.

7. Keep Your Clothes Clean and Maintained - Wrinkled, stained, stretched-out, faded, ripped, or ragged clothing is not classy. Neither are dirty shoelaces or sneakers covered in scuffs. Launder your clothes properly, dry-clean what needs it, remove fuzz and pilling, and replace items when they’re past their prime. Take care of your clothes, and they’ll help take care of your image.

8. Make Your Accessories Intentional - Accessories should look like you chose them for a reason. Personally, I don’t think smartwatches are particularly classy. A traditional timepiece—even an inexpensive one—can elevate your look. The same goes for jewelry. You don’t need seventeen bracelets, leather cuffs, and a puka shell necklace fighting for attention. Keep it simple and intentional.

9. Dress One Level Above What’s Expected - This is one of my favorite style strategies. If everybody else is wearing T-shirts, wear a polo. If everybody is wearing jeans or sweatpants, wear chinos. If everybody has athletic shoes on, rock some minimal leather sneakers, loafers, or boots. The goal isn’t to show up in a three-piece suit when everybody else is casual. It’s simply to elevate your style one level so you stand out without looking like you’re trying too hard.

10. Grooming Is Part of Style - You can wear the greatest outfit on the planet, but if you look like a savage from the neck up, we’ve got a problem. Keep your beard trimmed and edged. Maintain your hair. Take care of your skin. Clean up your brows—and yes, gentlemen, you need two of them. Keep your teeth looking good and your nails clean. Grooming is the finishing touch that pulls everything together.
