Volunteers Build Burlap Highways to Help Mitten Crabs Migrate

Volunteers at the Bitan waterfront in New Taipei are installing decorated burlap sacks to assist juvenile mitten crabs in migrating upstream. These sacks help the small crustaceans bypass concrete weirs that act as impassable barriers, providing both a physical path and a food source via algae to ensure the crabs reach maturity and eventually return downstream to breed.
