AI GeneratedAn Amazon cargo plane (Prime Air Flight 7598) overran the runway at Miami International Airport, resulting in five deaths and five injuries. The aircraft struck several vehicles and caught fire, requiring a massive emergency response. A joint investigation involving the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, FAA, and NTSB is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.
The mayor of Miami and FAA officials are holding a news conference following an
Amazon cargo plane running off the runway at Miami International Airport. Let's listen in.
Individuals and we have multiple individuals that were transported to local hospitals
with unknown injuries. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Homicide Bureau will be the lead agency
in charge of the death investigation portion alongside our local and federal partners as
we all have different parts of our investigation to conclude.
We want everyone to know that this area is still a very active scene so if everyone at home if you
do not need to be in this area please we ask that you refrain from coming into the area.
We have also dedicated a hotline if you believe that one of your family members
may be involved in this tragedy please contact the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office at 305-471-2400.
That line is for family if you believe that your family is involved please otherwise keep
that line clear. We will be providing further information later on as it becomes available.
Now I'll say it in Spanish now and then I'll turn it over to the mayor.
Good evening everyone. Today is an incredibly difficult day for all of us here
in Miami-Dade County. Earlier today we know that the Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the runway and
now we know that five people lost their lives and five others were injured. My heart is with
all of the families who were affected and to everyone who is grieving tonight and we're also
praying for the injured and for their families and I want to thank the men and women of our fire
rescue team of our Sheriff's Office. I want to thank all the first responders. Our fire rescue
team was there within seconds of the crash so we're deeply grateful for everything that they
have done and always do and right now our focus is on the families those who are injured and the
ongoing response at Miami International Airport and the investigation. We're learning more about
what happened and we'll continue to update you. I know the Sheriff's Office as well will continue
to update you as soon as information is confirmed and tonight our entire community is joined in
prayers and grieving for those who are affected.
I want to thank the Sheriff's Office and everyone at the airport who are still very active in this situation and when we have more details we'll let you know.
Natalie Orvis-Millan. We're here with our chairman of the commission,
chairman Rodriguez and commissioners Cohen-Higgins and Orvis. Thank you. Gracias.
Has that been identified?
All right, good evening ladies and gentlemen. Ray Jadalla, Fire Chief for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
and just to kind of touch up on some of the things that the Madam Mayor and
the Sheriff had already mentioned. So just as you heard just before 2 p.m. today,
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a Alert 3 from MIA Tower. Alert 3 is a confirmed
aircraft accident that occurred just west of 67th Avenue. What we found was a very complex
situation here. As you may have seen or may have heard, the airplane did strike a couple of
vehicles that required a couple of victims that were actually trapped in the vehicles.
So a complex extrication with our technical rescue teams started to occur. In addition to that,
we had a very complex fire. Engine compartments that were on fire, including a search and rescue
of the pilot and co-pilot that were trapped in this aircraft. Now my understanding is with the
FAA, they want this incident to refer as a 21-air cargo aircraft. This is the aircraft that was
flying on behalf of Amazon. This is the information that's been provided to Fire Rescue. This is the
information that's being relayed to our media. A total of 60 fire apparatuses arrived just shy
of 200 men and women from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to begin the actual search and rescue and
firefighting cause. Now we do have a unified command that has been established with numerous
public safety agencies, including outside agencies as the Sheriff had mentioned.
This incident will continue for the next several days as we play now a supporting role with the
Sheriff's Office as they determine the cause of the deaths. Total 10 that were involved,
five fatalities, three that are in critical condition that were transported to the trauma
center, and another two that were transported to a local hospital. In total, I know that
typically a request for the response time for our aircraft rescue firefighting apparatus,
they arrived within 30 seconds of after getting a call. As you're well aware,
these incidents require seconds, not necessarily minutes, in regards to a response. We do still
have an active fuel leak that's occurring off of the aircraft that is being mitigated
as we speak, as we go. Now one of the other questions that tends to occur for the FAA
is that the incident, the actual cause of the incident, will be determined
by the FAA and the NTSB. In Spanish, I'm going to have Erika Benitez provide you information.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
All right, so we're going to take a couple questions. Please understand that the information
is quite limited. So the five deceased, were they all on the plane itself,
or is the mixture of people that were in the cars and on board the cargo plane?
I think we can say. So like I said before, I didn't want to answer any further questions
at this time regarding the investigation, and I'll try to explain a little bit why I
think it will help. Understanding this is a very active scene. As we said, not only included a
plane, it included vehicles as well. It is up too early on to start to making finalized
determinations. We're able to give you now what we have confirmed, which is five deceased
and five in the hospital. Thank you. As soon as we are able to give you more, we will.
FTA is not providing a statement at this time.
I'm sorry. FAA and NTSB at this time will not provide a statement.
They are involved in the investigation. I don't know if they're here, sir. I know
they have already been notified and they're part of the investigation.
Okay, you got fire and PD, okay?
Still part of the investigation. Remember, that's FAA and NTSB. They're the lead investigating that,
right? So it's a joint investigation at this time, and that's all we have at this time.
That's all we have at this time. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much, guys. Guys from the media, remember, we brought you here.
Let's start getting our stuff so we can cross you right back. We can't stay here, okay?
