Ali Mahmoud reports from Gaza City.
Nearly three years after the loved ones were killed,
these families can finally lay them to rest.
Nearly 100 bodies recovered from beneath the rubble.
These people gather here, the relatives, the surviving family members,
and the neighbors to give them a final farewell, to say goodbye,
and to hold on the memories of the people that they loved the most.
Maryam al-Balaw's husband and three of her children were killed.
I have been waiting for this moment.
I want to bury my husband and my children.
I want them to have a grave.
Relatives say the members of three extended families
and dozens of displaced friends and neighbors were sheltering in three homes
when multiple Israeli strikes targeted the area on November 19, 2023.
Retrieving the bodies was a difficult and dangerous operation.
Civil defense teams work in unstable, partially collapsed structures.
Much of the work has to be done manually.
There are still thousands of bodies beneath the rubble that we can't recover.
Our message to the world is that this equipment has to enter Gaza
so we can recover all the victims.
Maryam says the years since the bombing have been filled with grief,
but also uncertainty.
It is the most difficult feeling in the world, and I am exhausted.
I have been waiting for this day since they were killed.
The waiting may be over, but the mourning is only beginning.
