This video demonstrates the process of sculpting a dragon model for 3D printing, transitioning from Blender to ZBrush to achieve better organic detailing. The creator discusses the importance of geometry and angles for FDM printing before focusing on high-detail sculpting using a pressure-sensitive tablet.
All right, today we are in Blender and we are learning how to make a model for 3D printing.
I'm going to be using a tablet today for most of my sculpting, but you're going to be able to pick
up on a lot of things that you can do just using a mouse to get the basic form down and things like
that. So let's go ahead and we will jump right into this. And as it said in the title, we're
going to be making a dragon. You can go up here and where it says file, go to new and go right
into sculpting, but instead I'm going to add some other base geometries to this. And in order to do
that, I need to first remember what program I'm in. This is Blender, not ZBrush. And then I need
to go ahead and we'll select this and let's go ahead and get used to what I'm doing. I didn't
know what, let's tab out of there. We'll delete this altogether. So we're going to go shift A,
we're going to add a mesh, sphere, and S, bigger, tab, alt A to deselect them. And let me make sure
the stream's going here. Yep, it is. Okay. Just making sure things are working properly. Okay,
so let's go. And one of the things you want to remember when you're sculpting for 3D printing is
that the object is going to have to be, I mean, I'm going to be printing this on an FDM machine.
So the angles have to be a certain amount, otherwise you will need support and things
like that. So we're going to go ahead and let's tab out of there, add in another mesh.
This one will be cylinder. Blender has pretty good keyboard controls,
so it's pretty simple to figure out what you're doing here. Let's subdivide this
right there. Go into face select, we'll grab this, face select. Come on now. Oh, that's why.
Okay, undo those other little edits I did down there or I'll get funky geometry later. There we
go. Okay, so paint in the butt. And this is kind of what I mean by keeping the angle down. Then I
do need some more loop cuts. We'll go in and put one here, here, here, here, here, here. And I think
we'll hit them all again. What we're going for is trying to get all the polygons to be about the
same size in all of the different shapes that we create before merging them together. All right,
so tab out of that shape, kind of see what's going on. Let's go ahead and add in another cylinder.
This one, we'll just grab the top face here. Do it again and go back and give it a couple
loop cuts. All right, now use our bool tool with control shift B and union. Now we have one object,
select all of it here. We can do the subdivide it down now. This is kind of just quick and
thrown together as you can see. But let's see here. Alt A to deselect everything. And then
we can go up here, go into sculpting mode. This kind of changes everything. So we're going to go
in here. Nope, in here. Turn on dynamic topography. Just hit okay there. I lost it. Where'd it go?
Okay, so constant detail. Turn that to about 40. And we can go up here and start adding some
detail to our guy here. If you want to subtract, you just switch to subtract there. And I've
automatically got symmetry turned on. So my symmetry is off. That's not good. We'll just
have to do the whole thing by hand. You can see how the sculpting gives it a lot more organic look.
Oh man, and now I'm getting weird artifacts over there. Okay, well, let's just cheat. Like I said,
we weren't going to do. Go right into sculpting mode. There are other ways to make a tail.
Alright, so first things first. Let's crank up the radius. Turn on dynamic topography.
Constant. 40. And crank up the strength. Let's get a little bit of a body going here.
Well, that was a little much, but I think it'll work. Alright, so this is why I hate blender,
man. Because it's like not keeping up at all. Fail. I've given up on blender. I'm opening ZBrush.
ZBrush will do the same thing. And you can get free versions of it. This is a little bit better
program for doing what I'm trying to do. And as soon as it opens up here, you'll be able to see
why. I have been using it quite a bit lately. I think that's one of the reasons I'm so frustrated
with blender right now. But just bear with me, because if you haven't seen this program before,
it is definitely worth it. And I think you will enjoy what you see. So let's come on.
Here it comes. Alright, so we want to make a dragon. Let's just grab a sphere.
And watch how quick this goes. So alright, symmetry is turned on. I'm gonna go ahead
and let's do this. Let's do division. Just go in here and pop in a head. Alright,
so let's get a little closer. Let's do a little detail. You can do some amazing stuff with this.
Make sure I'm in the head. Yeah, okay, geometry, divide. Let's go get our clay brush. That's why
I love this clay brush. And there for a minute and flesh out some of this. We are in electrical
mode. Hit the alt key and zoom in and out. We jump in and throw some detail on this head here.
And it just deforms it. That's one of the great advantages of having this tablet is that it's
pressure sensitive. So I can gouge out the clay if I want. Build it up and make nice features.
And let's do the same thing to the other side there, because I do have mirroring turned on.
Let's get and let's grab this other brush that I like to use a lot here.
Zoom in even further. I think we'll divide one more time since this is the head. Really digging
that nostril there because I want to build it up even more. Get it kind of a nod on its head here.
I got a long way to go. Alright, let's do this. Let's grab a damn standard brush again.
Let's see how bad that looks with an eyeball in it. Not bad. You'll notice it didn't mirror the
other eyeball when I added the eyeball. So I do need to change that a little bit, but let's bring
it out a little bit. I think that's better. And then the way to change that is to go to Z plugin
and subtool master mirror. Okay. And now there is one over there as well. So I'm going to move
those along, go back to my head. And what I'm going to do is go back into draw mode,
grab my clay brush, build this eyebrow up to look a little bit more. I mean, it's a dragon. It's
not like you can look that realistic, honestly, right? I also want to get a sharper eyebrow in
here. And to do that, I'm going to grab too big. All right, now let's add some more lines in here.
I think he could use a little bit of detail. So actually, before we get too far into the head,
I think we should go back and catch up some of the body because obviously he's missing some
major parts. Let's go ahead and grab the clay, build up, zoom in and merge these two.
A nice little Adam's apple there for some reason. Neck. Hey, thanks for the tip guys. What's up?
Hey, thanks both of you guys. I didn't realize anyone was really watching. I kind of just
was getting into my drawing there. I'm actually, I'm going to have to save this because I'm going
to have to go. But I will continue this. This is another one of those files that I'll be putting
up on my Patreon if you happen to know anybody that wants to be a member of Patreon and get some
of my free sculptures. But yeah, very awesome on the tips. Thank you. Yeah, I kind of spaced out.
Like I said, I was getting really into drawing there. And I got a text from my wife asking me
what my kids wanted for a snack too. So that was kind of distracting. But that was kind of funny.
I looked away and there was nobody. And then I looked back and all the people were here. So I
wish I had my chat open. I could have said hi earlier. But look forward to a lot more live
streams, guys. I think pizza. No, they want candy. They're kids, man. We already had pizza today
anyway. But yeah, look forward to a lot more live chats. We're going to be doing some more
unprinting and taking printers apart and making room for new printers. So yeah, thanks, guys.
