What's up guys Justin here with the SketchupEssentials.com back with another Sketchup quick tutorial for you
So in this video, we're gonna continue working on our apartment model that we're gonna take in the layout in this video
We're probably gonna finish generating our floors and then we're gonna work on setting our views up and getting our first
Plan exported in the layout and before we get started
I do want to take a second and thank my supporters on patreon
Patreon as you know is the website where you can support creators on YouTube that you you like what they're doing
so if you like what I'm doing on this channel if you want to support me everything that uh
All the support I receive on patreon just goes right back into the show in the form of new extensions and new things to help
Make the show better. So if you want to check that out, make sure you check out the link in the notes below now
Let's go ahead and just jump into it
Alright, so the first thing I want to do is I want to go ahead and come in here and model my actual floors
So if you remember we modeled this using a reference image, so this image is in here
It's something that we imported if I make a copy of it off to the side
Which I'm gonna go ahead and do because I want to make sure I have that copy of it
I just use the move tool and copy mode right there
But what I what I don't have is I don't really have like floor
Geometry in here. So like an actual floor where I can apply a material that sort of thing
and so what I'm gonna do now that I've made this copy off to the side and I'm gonna go ahead and make that a
Group and we can hide it
Or we'll probably put it on like an always off layer or something like that a little bit later
But in either case what we're gonna do with this is we're just gonna come in here real quick
and we're just gonna trace out our floors and
So that's not gonna be a super difficult thing to do, especially for these rectangular rooms
I can just come across and just draw a box across them and
What I do need to be careful of when I do this
I'm doing this on the bottom because you can see a lot better
But you do need to be careful that you're not accidentally erasing out walls or that sort of thing
You want to make sure that all you're doing?
You want to make sure that all you're doing is drawing along this face
and you can kind of tell just by clicking between these two faces that they're their own individual face and
So all I'm gonna do is I'm gonna finish tracing all of this out
just so I have faces in here that I can apply a floor material to and
So you can see what I just did is I just came in here and I just turned off all of my layers
so that I'm not accidentally messing around with that geometry, so if I
Rotate up. All I have now is just my walls in here
and so that way this will be a lot easier for me to come in here and just
Generate all of this geometry
Without accidentally merging with other things that sort of thing and you can see how I'm kind of stopping my faces
Wherever the materials stop because what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna apply
Materials like wood floors and other things like that
To this model. So anywhere where there's a transition I stop this face and I start a new one
So I'm gonna go ahead and skip ahead
You don't need to watch me just trace along this face
But we'll come back in just a second and I'll have all these faces ready to go and we'll keep going
All right. So what I've done and I made this copy over here
but I came in and I just traced the edges of all of these that took a little longer than I expected it to but
You can see if I zoom or if I flip this around and I click on these various things from the bottom
You can see how they're in here as individual geometry
Well now what we can do and because we've already modeled our walls and everything else
I'm probably gonna leave this stair texture in here right now, but I'm actually gonna apply materials to these different faces
So we have actual
accurate flooring in here and
So what I'll do is I'll just come in here in the material section and I'll just pull
Various different materials in order to apply to this. I mean, there's like wood floor textures and
There's tile. There's carpet. So
Basically everything you need to get started and you can definitely bring in other
You can definitely bring in other material types as well, but I'm just gonna use Sketchup's built-ins for right now
And so we'll apply this kind of white
Tile in here. I don't know if this limestone is gonna look much better. I don't think that it is
We'll go ahead and leave it as this white square tile for right now
So now what we have and you can see how I turned all my layers off in order to do all of this now
I can turn my layers back on and I actually have an apartment in here that has
That has all of my different materials in it and everything else. So now I think we're pretty much ready to start
Generating our floor plan. So the first thing I'm gonna do real quick is I'm gonna create a layer and we're just gonna call it conceptual
Always off
And so that's a layer where you can put things if you don't if you don't ever expect to actually use them in your model
And you're always gonna want them turned off, but you don't want to delete them out of your model
So I'm gonna go ahead and put this
On that layer so that I have my backup of this flooring right here, and then I'm gonna delete out
oops
My base shape in just a second. The first thing I'm gonna do is
We'll go ahead and just draw a box around all of this
So I'm gonna go ahead and erase out all that extra
so all I have now is I basically have my floor plan shape and
One thing happened when I did that as I lost my stairs and I don't want to lose my stairs
So because I'm probably gonna model those a little bit later
so
There we go so now I have my floor plan in here and somehow at some point hidden geometry got turned on in my model
So I'm gonna go ahead and turn that off
So now what we're gonna start doing is we're gonna start generating some views that are kind of appropriate for the layout
So the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna generate a working view and this is probably something
I should have done a long time ago
But this is just kind of an overall view that you can use in order for actually working
So everything's gonna be kind of turned on and you can use that to make adjustments in your model
So in this case, what I'm gonna do is we're gonna use the scenes
In the animation section in order to save our viewpoint. So I'm just gonna go to view animation add scene and so
Most of you know with scenes basically what that means is now I've got this little tab up here
And if I click on it, it'll just go back to the view
So no matter where I go if I get in here if I get lost in my model
Whatever if I click on this scene, then it'll come back
To whatever I save that as
initially so when I first created the scene and you can also update those by right-clicking on your scene and clicking update and the
Other thing we're gonna want to do is we're gonna want to keep our scenes organized using the scenes manager
So that can be found over in your tray
And so I'm just gonna go over to the scene section and you see where it says scene one
We're just gonna rename that we're just gonna call that working
view so now
It's not a big deal right now, but as you go you're gonna have a whole bunch of different stuff in here and
Labeling
Your views is gonna be really important. And so what we're gonna do now is we're going to
start generating our floor plan views and so the way that we're gonna do that is
We're going to start by adding a section cut on our walls
So we're gonna create our very first section plane and I actually already have one in here
But if you don't you're just going to go to
tools
Section plane or there's a little icon for it over here
You can see how as I move my mouse over my model it locks to various faces depending on which one you put this over
Well, what I want to do is I want to tap the up key because that's gonna lock me to the up and down
So you can see how when I lock up and down that's gonna allow me to take a section cut of this whole building
Straight up and down and so that gives me my cut through my walls
Which gives me what I can export to layout in order to create my floor plan
And so you can see how this this works pretty well if I click this top down button
There's a few things that I want to note
The first is you can actually see the section plane and it's giving everything kind of this gray
Color and so what we're gonna do is we're gonna go to view and we're gonna uncheck section planes
So don't uncheck section cuts because then your section won't be there anymore. You're gonna go to view
Section planes to turn that off and you're gonna leave section cuts on
So that's the first thing is you've got kind of a floor plan view
With your section cut and you can see that this gives you a floor plan view
But it's not very good because it's not straight up and down because your model has the perspective view
So you can see how like if I look at this wall
This isn't a straight up and down view of this wall
And so the way that we're gonna fix that and the way we're gonna get just a straight up and down view is we're gonna turn
Perspective off. So you're just gonna go to camera and
Instead of perspective you're gonna go to parallel projection and you can see how when I went to parallel projection what that did
Is that generated?
Or that took the perspective out of my model. So now you can see inside this wall
That there's no longer the perspective view of it when we go straight up and down
So you can see how this gives us more of a floor plan view
And so now what we're gonna be able to do with that is we're gonna be able to export that to layout
So we're gonna take that view and that's gonna be the first view
We want to save is just our floor plan just our general floor plan
And so all I'm gonna do is I'm just going to add a scene
So I'm gonna click the little plus button over here and we're just gonna call this
floor plan
Overall and so now we've got an overall floor plan view that we can reference when we go over to layout
So we can open that up and we can go over here to just pull this general floor plan view
And there's some things that probably need to be done in this model
Like for example, I've got some lines inside my walls that need cleaning up that I didn't get before because they're inside the walls
So you can't really see them
So you can come in here and do some stuff like that to clean everything up
To make everything a little smoother
So now my line weights pretty smooth. You can see how I double-clicked inside my walls group in order to do that. And so
Let's go ahead and take this view and export it into layout. And so in order to do that
First of all, you're gonna want to save your model
And so when you save your model what that's doing is that's updating everything in your in your model file so that you can reference that
In layout so now when you import this into layout
It's gonna reference back to this file
And so you can also take a look at your model and see if there's anything in here that you think is problematic
So like for example, I'm gonna go ahead and move this stove
Back against the wall. So there's no gap in here. And then the other thing is
This refrigerator model that I imported
looks like it's kind of
Clashing with this floor a little bit. And so what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna move that up just a bit
Just enough that these faces aren't really merging anymore. Now if I go back to my floor plan view
You can see that again instead of the wood floor showing through so just some quick cleanup things
The other thing that isn't in here and I'm gonna have to do this later is I'm gonna have to model in these stairs
so for right now
They're not in here. We're not we're not gonna worry about that for right now. We'll come back in and add that a little bit later
but basically what we're gonna do now is
We're gonna save our model one more time and what we're gonna do and and you need to remember that layout is a pro
version feature
So what you can do is you can click on the send a layout button. Well if you have the layout
License if you have a pro version license, then it'll just automatically open this in layout
so let's go ahead and click send to layout and there's other ways to do this to get this stuff out of a
Sketch up model and into layout. We'll go with this for right now
So this is gonna pop up in layout and the first thing it's gonna ask you is what template you want
So there's a bunch of different built-in templates. And so basically these are your page sizes so you can get a 3 a 4
standard architectural sizes
Tabloid there's a lot of different stuff kind of built in here
Some of these have some of these are just basically the graph paper
And then some of them actually have a title block on the side so you can add things like project information
That sort of thing and so like for example, I'm gonna scroll down and I'm gonna select
We'll select this art architectural D landscape and click OK
And so when I click on that what that's gonna bring in is that's gonna bring in an architectural landscape
Size page with your title block and then that's gonna bring your image in as well. Because if you remember we told it to
Bring that in
To layout and so, you know just generally speaking there's a whole bunch of different title blocks in here
Things like project names and who drew it that sort of thing. And so we've got kind of our first
Plan view in layout and so you can see immediately one of the first issues you have is your scale
Your your image isn't brought in at a certain scale. So it's just brought in at a scale of like an image
and so
And I may create a whole nother video just going through
The different scrapbooks and line types and all this stuff off to the side for right now
What we specifically want to focus on is this section called sketch up model
So I'm not gonna worry about patterns or anything like that
We've also got our pages in here
But for right now, let's focus on our sketch up model
And so this is basically where it has all the information for the stuff that you've brought in
From a sketch up model. So if you look there's things like which scene
You want this to show?
So if I click this working view then this window in layout is gonna show my working view scene
If I click my floor plan overall, this is gonna show my floor plan overall scene
so those are gonna correspond with these in sketch up and
So the other thing you can see is it's got the standard views in here
And it's also got a scale and that's kind of what we want to focus on for right now is we want to actually bring
This in at a scale because this is kind of a weird scale. It's in at 1 1 to 24
Generally speaking things like this come in at one of these architectural scales be that like a quarter inch or a half inch or an eighth
inch an eighth inch seems to be pretty common for
bigger commercial projects, so we'll go ahead and try that first and
See how big that is that's probably gonna be pretty small on this page because it's not a very big apartment
so maybe we'll bring that in in a quarter inch and
So now we've got our view in here
We may actually be able to bring that into a half inch because that architectural D sheet is a pretty big sheet
So we'll go to the half inch
So now we've got more of an architectural scale in here
And so now what we want to do is we want to move this around on our page
And so one thing that's going to be important is you want to make sure this box for preserve scale on resize is checked
Because otherwise what's going to happen is if you resize this you see how the scale is changing as I go
So that's what you don't want is you don't want to try to move this around on your page and start losing your scale
Because you need to print these all at a certain scale and so what you're gonna
Do is you're gonna go to this we'll go back to the half inch and we'll check the box for preserve scale on resize
And so now when I click and drag this you can see how my image stays the same size
It's just a question of how big this box is. So now you've got your floor plan in here
As kind of a window into your model
So now you can click and drag and make this fit and fit on your page without having to worry about your scale
All right. So in the next video, we'll probably talk a little bit more about the different line weight types and that kind of thing
one thing I'm noting
With my model and the first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna save so the first thing we'll do is we'll save this and
One interesting thing. I'm noting right now is this is actually still bringing in that old texture
And I think the reason for that on the floors is because if you look on the back side
And we can look in the entity info. Yeah, all of these faces are still in here
It looks like that texture is still in there
So it looks like for whatever reason we had two faces sitting in there we had the one
We had the one that actually has our faces that we applied on the front side and you can see how on the back side
It was still retaining that original texture
What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go fill all of that in on this back side
So there's no more confusion about that, but you can see how there's actually a second layer
It's kind of sitting in the same place that has that texture on it for some reason
I'm not really sure why but we'll go ahead and delete that out
So now I've got this so that my materials are on the front side and there's nothing on the back side now if I go
back to my floor plan
And I click Save
Then we can go back to layout and update our model to show that
So you can see I went in and saved my model
well, then what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna update my reference file in layout once that's done and
You'll see these textures will change
So if I come in here and I right-click on this and I select update model reference
What that's gonna do is that's gonna go back and that's gonna pull from Sketchup the most recent version of that
So if I click update model reference
This should change to my current set of textures. There you go
So you can see how that adjusted based on the changes that I made in my model
So now we've created kind of our first page in layout. We've got everything set up in the next video
I'm going to talk a little bit more about some other views. So doing some things like line weights and
So doing some things for like the doors and the windows come in here with a different line weight that sort of thing
So that's where we're gonna wrap up this video. Leave a comment below. Let me know what you thought
