About my garden I live on the edge of USDA zone 6b/7a We have hot and humid summers and cold winters with occassional snow and ice storms. Everything that appears tropical and is in a container goes indoors or to a greenhouse for the winter. The plants in the ground stay in the ground all year. The massive palms are faux planted in their containers to keep from blowing over, they all go to a greenhouse during the winter.

The speaker shares a comprehensive guide to late-summer and autumn gardening, focusing on sourcing clearance plants from retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's. The content covers strategic plant selection, the benefits of fall planting for root establishment, and practical demonstrations of potting, seed saving, and ground cover management to prepare the garden for the colder months.
Home Depot.
Haven't been here in a minute.
I'm just curious to see if they have anything on clearance right now.
Don't know.
Would be a little surprised but sometimes they have really good sales on their
trees and shrubs right around this time of year and I'd like to pick up a few more
somethings for the fall garden.
I know these are very loud.
My keys.
There's too much going on right now because I had to get all my keys together for the
house that I was on vacation.
I haven't gone through and done it all yet so it's just it's obnoxious.
Forgive me.
Hey what's up gardener friends?
Jeff here.
How's everybody doing?
Hope you're doing well.
I'm great.
Look at the sun.
Isn't it nice?
I have my sunglasses on but I really don't need to have them on except it's just it's
an angle thing and it's it's bugging me.
I feel like everybody's like why is this douchebag walking around with his sunglasses
on at 6 30 at night?
I can't help it.
I've got sensitive eyes.
Leave me alone.
Oh wow.
Those are overgrown.
Looks nice.
Oh there's a gloxema up here.
Really pretty.
I didn't plant any of these this year.
Very unusual for me.
I always plant a lot of gloxema but this year I was like let's take a break.
Wintergreen boxwoods.
What's wintergreen?
I know winter gem.
Oh okay.
I can't remember.
Are these the stinky ones?
Do they get smelly?
I can't tell right now.
Probably 30 bucks, huh?
Is it just ones with the yellow sticker that is a special bite?
This is confusing.
It doesn't matter.
I really shouldn't get one.
So I'll get two.
Maybe just one.
I like the trunk on this one.
Feel like I could have fun doing Bob's Eye on that.
No, what are you doing?
I have plenty of boxwoods.
That's not necessary.
I didn't even have a look at the other ones.
I didn't even look at my options.
You can't just grab a boxwood without even looking to see what the different options are here.
Some of these are actually kind of kind of cute looking.
This is a good price.
I can already tell I shouldn't have come here.
I'm in a very indecisive mood.
Oh my gosh.
I can't see anything.
Can you?
Got some nice looking sedums and some good phlox.
And over here some different hibiscus.
That's nice.
What kind of hydrangeas are these?
20% off.
That's a good price.
What are they?
Quick Fire Fab.
That's one of the best ones.
That's a really good price too.
Are these Quick Fire Fabs also?
These are Bobos.
Oh, Bobos are good too.
I love Bobos.
Are these also 20% off?
Uh oh.
See, what did the sign say?
The sign says two gallon proven winners.
$30 and it says 20% off.
Two gallon proven winners.
What's the purchase of 15 or more?
Oh, you guys.
Come on.
$30 is a decent price for a plant that size.
But I feel a little bit bamboozled.
Not really.
It was right there.
All I had to do was read it.
That would have been a great...
I mean, it's still a good price.
But I don't need it.
But for $25, I'd buy a Bobo and throw it in a pot for $30.
No, apparently $25 is my limit.
Dark Sesame.
Oh, it's an Astilbe.
This is not a plant that I normally see for sale in August.
Actually, it will be September when this video comes out.
That's not normal.
Usually things I see in the springtime.
But it's got buds on it.
And what great color too.
Really good foliage color on that.
That would be nice in a fall container.
Full sun to shade.
Ugh.
All right, buddy.
Let's see.
That's tempting.
I really like the color on this plant.
Well, those don't say you have to buy 15 or more.
So that's cool.
This is the Tuscan Sun Heliopsis.
I like those.
Oh, jeez.
I was not ready for mums.
Today is August 17th.
I know.
Filming this one way in advance.
Only because it's just the way things worked out.
I ended up having a video that's gonna be ready to go on a weekend.
And when this one would be coming out.
So, you know.
I don't know.
It might be a long video.
Maybe it won't.
Maybe this will be a bonus.
Or I'll just put this one out as a bonus for members.
And you get to have a look at it before everybody else does.
What are these?
Are they Spring Sizzle?
That's one of my favorites.
Little Hotteep.
That's also a good one.
Anybody else just not really all that into the dark foliage on the hydrangeas?
These are really popular.
Really, really, really popular.
People love them.
I guess it's the same difference as that Astilbe I just got, right?
Pardon the noise.
There's a private airport right next to where I am.
All the rich people are flying through just ruining my video.
These are $17.
That is a good price.
They also look pretty crappy though.
Where's more of these?
I really would like to grab another Spring Sizzle.
Berry White.
That is nice.
I like the Berry Whites.
Those are good.
Vanilla Strawberry.
Hey, I couldn't find these for a few years.
That's tempting because we all know I love the Vanilla Strawberries.
My huge hydrangea trees are the Vanilla Strawberries.
They're pretty freaking awesome.
Strawberry Sundae, which is just smaller Vanilla Strawberry.
I want Spring Sizzle.
Strawberry Sundae.
Dang it.
Oh, this has some nice color on it.
This looks like a blue chiffon, but I'm sure it's not.
French Cabaret Purple.
That's a really lovely color, I assume.
They're kind of wilted and sad.
But from what I can see, those look really pretty.
60 to 90% off this table.
Look for Yellow Clarence stickers.
Roses.
Strawberries.
Blue Bit.
I don't think I want any of this stuff.
Sue Grayton Spring Containers.
Sorry, easily distracted.
Not Spring Containers.
Fall Containers.
Good color.
I'm also not on board with the Fall Containers that have the crotons and the tropicals in them.
Nothing about those screams Fall to me.
I understand the point.
There's some Fall colors in there, but they're tropical plants.
And where I live, Fall is chilly.
So even though this would be nice in a Fall Container, it doesn't really make sense.
I want whatever I use in my Fall Containers to be able to sit out in the cold.
So I should probably grab one of these gigantic freaking brown grasses over here.
It's a nice thing.
Even though the grass is brown, I think it's still fine because it'll, you know,
just look like Fall.
It'll just look like dry grass.
Not seeing the trees and things on the corners.
Oh wait, wait, wait, wait, look at that.
Accelerator trees.
Huh?
Oh, the Accelerator Pots.
That's fine.
I was hoping to find a Royal Raindrops Crabapple.
I think that this might be a Royal Raindrops Crabapple right here, actually.
Perfect Purple.
Well, no.
That's not it.
I want Royal Raindrops.
I don't know what Perfect Purple is.
I don't know anything about that one.
A lot of these don't have tags on them.
The only reason I want the Royal Raindrops is because that's what I planted last year.
It did beautifully.
It flowered beautifully.
It has done well as a containerized perennial tree.
We could probably do better than 50% off on this one, right?
I mean, there's not much left there.
Red Jewel.
I guess they're similar enough.
Doesn't really have to be a Royal Raindrops.
The other one I have is a Tina, which I don't care for.
Ooh, wait.
Oh, that's a Sergeant Tina too?
I thought that was some kind of Weeping Cherry.
This has really weird growth on it.
Never mind.
Royal Raindrops.
Okay, so apparently the skews are also on these wrappers.
That's good.
Okay, so we have Perfect Purple.
We have Red Jewel.
Man, the trunk on this is really nice.
What do we have over here?
What are these?
This is, okay, more Crabapple.
This looks like a Crabapple and then some types of maples and oaks.
That'd be pretty cool to try and grow an oak tree in a pot,
but I feel like after several years I would get pretty upset with the amount of
effort I have to put into pruning the gigantic thing, right?
My god, those are huge.
Okay, back to this one.
It is a Royal Raindrops, but man, it looks...
I don't want to spend $75 on that.
It really doesn't look very good.
This one is probably also a Royal Raindrops.
It's interesting.
The Royal Raindrops all look pretty bad.
Huh.
Maybe I should diversify.
Maybe I should try one of these other ones I'm not familiar with,
but also has the purpley foliage.
Like this one.
It's got nice foliage.
I don't care that much about the foliage.
I care more about the spring blooms and that it's persistent,
which I don't know if that's the case with a lot of these here.
We'll say on the Red Jewel.
I doubt it.
These tags are not usually very descriptive.
Silvery spring 4-7.
Beautiful white blossom spring developing bright red fruits.
It doesn't say if the fruit persists.
Persists mean do they hold on to their fruit all winter?
They drop them.
That was for the Red Jewel.
I don't know.
Let's go get some other things and I'll think about those trees.
Just because something's a good deal doesn't mean you need to buy it.
Don't look that healthy.
They'd look fine next year, probably.
But I don't know.
I mean $75 is still a good amount of money.
Another Weeping Cherry would be nice.
They have any of those?
Or are these all just really weird looking Tina Crab Apples?
Yep.
That's all that was.
It was just a weird little Tina Crab Apple.
I'm gonna pick out a grass.
Let's see what else they have.
The ones that are further back look like they have a little bit more life in them.
Which makes sense.
The ones that are sitting in the shade.
They also don't have quite as much color either.
But I just feel like they have more hope.
That one's decent.
Decent looking grass.
I don't mind the brown that much on them either though.
So maybe I'll go ahead and grab one that's brown.
That's okay.
Part of fall to have that brown color.
I'm gonna get one of maybe this one.
It's got some darker tones in it.
Not looking as dried up.
I don't have to like 15 of these, do I?
Okay.
Some nice looking sedges.
I assume these are all the same that were on the other side, right?
Berry Whites and Vanilla Strawberries.
That's a nice looking flower.
And that's the Strawberry Sundae.
That's beautiful.
I like these.
I like these a lot.
Who make these?
$15 please?
$25.
That's not bad.
They're in great shape.
This is a Dwarf Fountain Grass.
I don't do as much with the Miscanthus grasses as I used to.
Decent selection of Crepe Myrtles.
Are they all red?
Huh.
I say Crepe Myrtle red.
What the heck does that mean?
There's most certainly a cultivar behind the Crepe Myrtle.
I'm just gonna say red.
This one just said Crepe Myrtle.
Didn't even say My Fair Myrtle.
This one right here.
Cherry Delight.
Nah.
I've been having a desire to get a new Natchez Crepe Myrtle.
I know I shouldn't.
They just don't do all that well with our winters.
But I have a spot that's pretty warm.
This looks awesome.
It's Caryopteris Blower Splats.
Look at that foliage.
That's so silvery and pretty.
And the bees.
Bees were on it.
Well, they were until I pissed them off.
I'm sorry, bee.
That's really nice looking.
They need a drier setting than I can give them.
Funky Buddleia.
It's pretty.
Oh, they have the Gatsky.
Gatsky.
Gatsby Global Oakleaf Hydrangeas.
Those are nice.
These are little.
My gosh.
These are Bobo's also.
Those ones outside look way better.
One of the reasons I like the Bobo.
I didn't talk about this.
Is they, when they say smaller, right?
I think it's like four by four, four by three.
If even.
Yeah.
Three to four feet wide.
About three feet tall.
And they're usually covered.
I say usually because my yard's weird.
But usually from top to bottom.
It's covered in flowers.
Makes for a really impressive looking plant.
These aren't on sale.
Really?
I don't know what they are.
Oh, okay.
Sweet Spires.
Okay.
So a final look at everything.
I'm pretty happy with what I picked out so far.
Oh, Zebra Corn.
I just realized I didn't plant any of that.
And I pulled my seeds out.
I was like, I still have time.
But do I really?
How much is this?
Oh, it's $6.
Okay.
Yeah, we can do that.
Looks so healthy too.
Oh my goodness.
What are you doing out here?
Does it actually give a name?
No.
Well, really?
That's a Frydeck, isn't it?
A $6 giant Frydeck.
It's tempting.
I don't need it.
But it is tempting.
Actually, is that a Frydeck?
The leaves are a little bit stiffer.
Been a while.
Been growing that variegated one for such a long time.
I forgot what a regular Frydeck looks like.
All right.
Here's the thing.
See, this is full of its seed heads.
So this is done.
It's not going to do much more.
Oh, look at the adorable little freaking ear of corn that's in there.
So by the time I'm even doing fall containers,
which will be about time the video comes out,
about three weeks from now,
this is going to be looking really good.
Look at that corn that's so cute.
Yeah.
I'm going to dig through and see if I can find another one that has a little bit of life left in it.
But I have my seeds still.
So I can always pop some seeds down.
Even if they only get like a foot tall.
That's still pretty good.
It's just a fun variegation with some fun shape.
I got baskets.
Stelladoro.
Daylilies.
Lots of Hooperas.
I love this Sulcher.
The Sulcher.
Wow.
Dolce Silver Gumdrop.
I think that is so freaking pretty.
Such a pretty Hoopera.
Hey, I see some nice looking Sedums.
Very pretty.
Vigro Grass.
50% off Dwarf Mondo.
That's pretty good.
Mondo Grass can be stupid pricey.
Is it just the green?
Yeah, it's just the green, but it still looks good.
False Spirea.
Chocolate Shogun of Steel Bay.
Similar to that last one, isn't it?
Very pretty.
50% off Cannas.
I think these are all regular price, right?
I don't know why they wouldn't be.
They look fine.
That doesn't always mean anything though.
Sometimes they clearance things out for reasons that make no sense to me.
Aside from that one, they look pretty good.
Such a good price.
I don't want more Cannas.
If I do get more Cannas, I think I want to stick to really special varieties.
I like the Toucan.
Those are nice.
They bloom very, very heavily.
And they stay small.
I need to really control my Cannagenetics in the yard.
My audio is probably all because I keep looking up.
I'm looking at these and for some reason didn't bring it out with me.
Lots of baskets.
Look at these Pleiades Arums over here.
That one and then this one over here.
Those are nice.
They're really big.
Really big.
I love that these seem to be catching on.
I don't know.
Did Kaylee do a video on them?
Did she do this?
I'm seeing more and more of them all over the place.
Like the last year or so.
That's fun.
Love a nice big beautiful Pleiades Arum.
These just look like Pothos.
There's a Jade.
Green Pothos are nice.
Jade Pothos.
Nice.
Neon Pothos.
I like the Neon Pothos.
Plain green but really pretty.
All right.
Are they calling them Marble Queens or Snow Queens?
I'm always curious.
Marble Queen.
Look at that.
Oh, except you can't because I have a tray in my hand.
I'm going to set this down.
We can get back over there.
Maybe I could just take my cart with me like a normal person.
There's nobody else here.
I wouldn't normally just leave my cart laying around like that.
I feel like that's pretty rude.
But there's only like one other person shopping.
Oh, that's never happened.
Wasn't expecting that.
Okay.
All right.
Yeah.
Philodendron Brazil.
Love the variegation on this one.
I think that's such a pretty Philodendron.
Look at that.
A lot of tricolor variegation.
These prices are good too.
There's a few more other Pothos over here.
Look at this.
It's a Neon Queen Pothos.
It's just, I mean, a limey green variegated Pothos.
Longer leaves on it.
Interesting plant.
Regular Golden Pothos, which are now looking just awful.
You know, the highly variegated Golden Pothos are now being sold as
some kind of special Golden Pothos.
I can't remember what it is.
But because of that, your regular Golden Pothos are pretty
drab and mundane looking.
Oh, yeah, I'm going to get that.
I need to wrap this up.
I was just going to grab a few things.
There's one of those Neon Queens.
It's an interesting Pothos.
I'm going to look at it.
Interesting, right?
I don't know how I'm crazy about it, but I think it's cool.
Something different.
I may as well look at what's inside while we're here, right?
I mean, it's just a house plant sort of covered in dust and spider mites.
Terrible.
Look at the price on the orchids.
Pretty little ginger.
Oh, they made some nice little balls out of those enjoy Pothos.
That's cool.
Nice looking.
I know everybody's loving these things.
I said these things are pretty cool.
Plants actually.
Well, this is big old leaves.
So I got something against them.
I don't.
I have nothing against.
Oh, wow.
Oh, man, it's either really dry or got spider mites.
Thief Joy Collection.
Gosh, the variegation on this is so nice.
That's beautiful.
Really just not interested in more Alakazias or Colocasia.
I'm sick of dealing with the spider mites.
I'm backing off of them for a while.
I'm just tired of dealing with all the spring and everything.
It's a pain in the butt.
Oh, look at her.
She's happy and cheery and cute.
All right.
That was fun.
Oh, hey.
Well, the skin daps us.
OK, that was fun.
I'm going to check out and then I don't know what's going to happen next.
There will probably be a video where we do something with these.
Or actually, I have other things I really need to be doing.
But it's good to get these now and be able to work with them in a few weeks.
In September, when it's time to do fall stuff.
Look, loads.
Sorry, air is off high.
It's actually a different day.
I ended up going back to the Home Depot because they had a new shipment of trees in.
It was just a much better deal to go back.
Raindrops, they look terrible.
So I got something different.
And well, really, I went back because I needed pool salts.
But, you know, two birds with one stone.
Bad saying.
Don't need to be stoning birds.
Got some cool plants in there.
We'll talk about those when I get back.
And I figure, you know what?
I haven't been to Lowe's in a long time.
Let's just pop in and see what's going on here.
I'm pretty sure I left off whatever my last clip was.
Saying, like, we'll go back to the house and look at things.
Well, obviously.
Obviously, that changed, right?
But the point is still there.
We will go back to the house and look at things.
I love this one.
The bluey purple esters.
I think those are so nice.
Lots of celosia.
Nice big sedums.
I just picked up a couple sedums at Home Depot for six bucks.
They were nowhere near this big.
They weren't the brilliance either.
Just, I don't know, autumn fire, maybe.
It's that time of year.
Don't see the crotons all summer because they're saving them for fall now.
Stupid.
Oh, I see heliconia.
It's the same thing.
What's with the heliconias only being available in the fall?
Why?
Oh, they're technically...
Nah, these are the assortment thing.
So you get a little chunk of heliconia with your stuff.
Which is cool, but no.
Heliconias like it hot.
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot.
I know it's different everywhere you live, but here in the fall we have cool evenings
and even cool daytime temperatures.
Some days it's very cold.
Some days it's very warm, but it's just not heliconia weather.
First frost you get and boom, those are done.
Oh, they have the Niagara Falls panicum in the little containers.
That's nice.
The Niagara Falls panicum is, well, it's like all the others.
It's a tall grass, but it has a bluey tone to it.
Isn't that pretty?
How much are these?
I feel like that's too much for a chunk of grass in a little pot.
$13.
Because it's only a few more dollars probably to get these in a bigger pot.
Really pretty though.
I like that bluey color.
At this size they just kind of remind me of like crabgrass or something you want to
pull out of your yard.
Hey, these guys are looking good.
Done flowering, but they look nice.
Okay, clearance.
What's going on over here?
Black-laced elderberries.
Got some caladiums.
What is this?
You're all crinkled up.
I can't even tell what you are.
Some kind of white jello maybe?
That's not a white jello.
I don't care enough to look any further though.
What do you want to miss?
Ha, some lilies, some pakisandra.
I love pakisandra.
Japanese birch, pakisandra, terminalis.
Great ground cover.
Sometimes it can be a bit much.
It might take over.
But if you can control it, wonderful ground cover.
So how much is the 15 for the black lace?
I've wanted one of these for a long time.
I don't fully know where I'd put it though.
There's a spot on my hill where I think a black-laced elderberry might look nice.
But no, I just don't see myself getting around to planting it as a problem.
This is, it's an area that's a pain to get to.
So I can see myself putting it off and then never getting it done.
Love all the grasses.
More kianas over here.
Are these guys on clearance?
There you go.
Autumn Inferno Cotoneaster.
Charging $90 for Virginia Creeper.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Never mind, Boston Ivy, not Virginia Creeper.
Still, come on.
That's a lot.
That's a lot of money for that.
But you know, Monrovia paying for top quality here.
I'm just being spicy.
I do, I like Monrovia.
They're expensive.
I do really like most of their plants.
Yucca, Ivory Tower.
Well, that's not really going to be a very happy plant squished in there like that.
I'm just gonna spend $80 on an Ivory Tower Yucca.
Why would they spend that kind of, I mean, it's a nice looking plant.
But they usually sell these with the unmarked pots for like 30 bucks.
Plenty of weigillas.
Lots of grass.
Mostly maiden grasses, which I'm not really into.
That's a nice selection of clearance stuff.
I think maiden grasses are beautiful Miscanthus grasses.
But they tend to splay out when they don't have enough light.
And I do not have enough light.
These are some nice big pots of lemongrass.
Goodness.
You know, and I know the black laces, they say sun to part sun.
I just feel like I wouldn't be able to give them the light that they really want.
That's a very pretty abelia.
Look at that.
What's it called?
This is called Peach Perfection.
It's got a nice color to it.
The foliage is a nice gloss.
Good shiny foliage.
I love shiny foliage on my shrubs.
Makes everything feel more quenched.
Right?
Everything seems more lush and happy when it's shiny.
I don't know why I do this.
Every fall I'm like, oh, do they have Heliconius?
Which it doesn't matter if they do.
I'm not gonna buy them.
I have my Heliconius at this point.
I don't want them anymore.
Especially when they're in assorted pots.
Like, oh, these are cute crotons.
I like these.
All right, yeah.
Okay, still having trouble letting go of days past when, you know, those crotons are like $12.98.
Those days are gone.
I need to accept it.
Just move on.
Ooh, that's a nice look.
You know, sometimes I think it's stupid doing the plants inside of the plastic pots.
Just pick out your own pots and save some money.
But that's actually, I don't know.
It seems more practical for some reason.
Because the basket, like, after the plant's dead, hey, at least you have a basket.
As opposed to a cheapy cheap plastic pot that you probably didn't want to begin with.
Pessimism raging today.
They probably won't die.
I was just kidding.
Clarence.
House plants.
How much are the maculatus?
Gosh, these things are sopping wet.
Guess that's how it goes when you put things and so forth in containers.
I got the Burl Marxes.
That's kind of cool.
The flames.
Beautiful leaf.
How much?
$60.
Well, that's a pretty good-sized plant.
See?
I mean, these are pretty big.
Sansevieria, orchids, and you know, it's the whole thing.
It's what it always is here.
I also have the Philodendron Brazil.
More pothos.
You know, it's the same shtick.
Nice looking rabbit's foot fern.
I swear, you guys.
Best fern.
Give them a try.
You know, they're not like the same, like, you know, big luscious fern that we think
of when we think of ferns.
But this one right here, they're just tough.
Just don't overwater it.
They'll live a very long time.
No direct sun and just, you know, take it easy with them.
You'll be good.
They have lots of neat...
That's Clarence.
...neat pothos here, but a lot of them aren't labeled.
So I'm just like, I mean, I don't know.
Because there are so many different types.
Now, when I look at this, I go, that's probably a golden.
But I don't know.
It just says assorted basket.
It's got more white on it than you typically see with a golden.
It's a nice kind of tricolor leaf to it.
But sometimes the goldens look like this, you know?
Golden pothos is a pretty broad term.
This also might just be a marble queen, but it doesn't really look like one.
You know what I'm saying?
You get it?
Could be lots of different things without labels.
Kind of hard to walk around and show you stuff.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, pretty variegated pinnatum.
I'm sure there's a more fancy name for it,
but that's the essence of what it is.
Just a variegated pinnatum.
Oh, I just love a classic philodendron.
Nice and green and happy and healthy.
Nice.
I feel like I haven't been seeing the amazonicas as much in this one.
Wow.
Good lord, that's a nice, robust, healthy plant.
Impressive.
That's tempting, actually.
But as I mentioned, I'm trying to back off the alocasias and calocasias.
Even if just maybe just a year.
Just because I'm just, I'm so sick of freaking spider mites.
I'm sure the spider mites will just hitch a ride on something new,
but those seem to be their plants of choice.
They're the ones that I'm always having to treat.
So I don't want to bring more into the picture.
Just have more plants that are always covered in bugs to deal with.
You know what I mean?
That's a beautiful leaf.
Skindapsus of some kind.
You know, this is something I find interesting, which is this collector series.
That's it.
Just collector houseplant.
Can you think of anything that people collect where it's acceptable to say collector's item?
Outside of that just being a very broad term, right?
It's just a broad term.
Collector's items.
Okay, that's a category.
But if you collect baseball cards, you're not going to buy a baseball card
just because it says collectible baseball card.
Unless you're, maybe you're into mystery packages.
Maybe you would.
I don't know.
Fine china.
Those kinds of things.
Just because it says collector.
Would you buy it?
Don't you want more details than that?
I do.
I certainly do.
But maybe the thought is that if you know what you're looking for, then you know what it is.
I don't know.
This guy.
Oh, he's cool.
And it has its label.
There we go.
It's that pothos with the narrow leaves.
And do they have the little...
Yeah, they have the weird little thing.
They, they got, they have labias.
It is a neat pothos.
Especially if you're gonna spend a lot of time looking at the undersides of the leaf.
Otherwise, I don't know.
I just prefer a neon green pothos.
It's a neon.
It's fine.
Sunburst.
That is pretty.
This is a pinatum, right?
Or is it an aureum?
That's a pinatum.
Yeah, pinatum.
Okay.
Wow, that is beautiful foliage.
Oh, I love that.
I love that.
I don't want to get too many more things and need to be put on poles though.
Oh, look at these.
Sorry for whispering.
That was probably weird.
There's somebody standing near me.
It's that lindolene.
Xanthosoma.
Love these.
I don't bother with them.
Because of all the stuff I've seen about the spider mites.
But, you know.
Maybe next year.
If that's more under control.
That's a philodendron brazilis.
Very nice.
Oh, simple blue.
People love these.
Long-lived.
I bought one of these years ago.
Like, a long time ago.
That thing just grows and grows and grows.
I don't have to do anything with it.
It's just a happy, happy plant.
That's a nice looking golden pothos.
That's a very nice looking plant.
Just a good healthy green plant.
I love seeing that.
All right.
Okay.
Well, this has been fun.
I got to look at all the plants and do all the plant things.
Now.
Now we'll actually get back to the house and have a look at all the new stuff.
Look it.
Look what I got from Savers.
It makes the pellet ice.
Nugget ice pellet.
I don't know.
What?
And it works.
I'm running a clean cycle on it.
And it's like, it's got vinegar and things in it.
No manual.
But it actually works.
It's only $14.99.
It's a good one too.
Mixed reviews from what I've read from people.
Hey, Kitson.
How you doing?
That is a freaking steel pumpkin.
You gonna say hello?
Hey, pumpkin.
Yeah.
Love you too.
Hey, what about you?
Do you want to come outside?
Let's go outdoors.
It's a nice day.
Yeah, come on.
Let's go outside.
I'm sure you want to go do some swimming or something.
Don't you, Turbs?
Yeah, I'm sure you do.
You gonna go do some swimming?
You gonna go do some swimming, Turb?
Are you trying to trip me?
All right, Turbo.
Come on.
Let's go outside.
Do some swimming.
And I'm going to talk about plants.
You coming, Turbs?
What happened?
Where'd you go?
Get back over there.
Let's go.
I know.
It's so nice to go outside.
It has been so rainy.
Not complaining.
Love the rain.
But it's been like the last week and a half inside.
Not doing very much out here.
There's one of them.
You see how freaking big this is?
One of the reasons I grabbed this is just because of the sheer size of this thing.
This is an absolute beast.
What?
Are you waiting for a permit?
I told you you can go swim.
Go do your thing.
Go swim.
Have fun.
Yes, I mean it.
Go on.
Go do your thing.
Go swim.
You're free.
Go.
There you go.
Yeah, kangaroo paw ferns.
These are one of my favorites of the ferns.
It's a microsorum.
These smell nice.
Which I know that sounds weird.
Nope.
I don't smell anything.
Okay.
They are very fragrant though.
Not everybody can smell it.
Some people say it's a vanilla, cinnamony kind of smell.
I think it smells kind of like an almond or coconut.
You can't be over here with your boogers on your face.
Go on.
Go swim.
Go to the pool.
Go have fun.
I'll see you later.
My goodness, that dog.
He's got issues.
Relatively good fern for indoor care.
I will still say what I said earlier, which is that the rabbit foot fern is probably going
to be my number one recommendation as a houseplant fern.
Probably forever.
These are pretty close up there.
These are the blue star ferns.
Good ferns, mostly because you don't want to overwater them.
These need more humidity though.
Yeah, they do need more humidity, but if you just kind of just let these chill out in bright
indirect light most of the day, don't want a lot of sun.
Think about where these grow.
These are going to grow as an epiphyte, usually in the trunks of plants native to Australia
in pretty humid regions.
So, you know, you want that humidity for them.
But I've had some in my house in very dry winters and they're usually fine.
Sometimes get some browning and some crispiness on them, but I don't even care because when
they get the brown foliage, you can really smell the good stuff.
I don't know what that is, what that fragrance is, but when there's brown, you can usually
smell it.
So, you know, worse things can happen.
A little bit of winter die off and things smell nice.
I feel like this all just took a very odd turn.
It's a very large, happy, healthy plant.
These divide very well, very easily.
So I could come in here and I could probably make at least four more out of this.
If not, yeah, probably more than that.
I could probably get a dozen very small plants if I wanted to.
I don't think I need to.
I have one over here that was just a little guy.
We potted this guy up and I don't know if it was in the video, but no, just two months
ago, it was just a division I took from a bigger one and it's already filled that container
out.
They grow pretty quickly.
I don't know what you're staring at me for.
I'm not getting that poor and that water's not very warm.
We just lead the way, have some other plants down here.
Although I can't remember.
I think it's just the grasses.
That's all this lighting.
This is bad.
Yeah, this looks awesome, doesn't it?
That's the time of year, man.
Filming outside just sucks late in the summer and into fall.
Everything's really sharp, really long shadows.
It's fine.
You already know what the grass is.
I'm gonna grab a pot while I'm over here because I'd like to go ahead and, well, you know,
put together a little planter with them.
Here are the rest of the plants hanging out over here in the sun.
I got the crabapple.
It's a Robinson crabapple.
Small, okay?
It's a little guy, which is fine.
It being a little guy meant that it only cost $39.99 and it looks great.
The $75 ones, they just, they looked bad.
I just, I can't do it.
If they were maybe, I don't know, $20?
Sure, but I wasn't gonna spend $75 on trees that look that horrible.
I don't care if they're 50% off.
You gotta do better than that, right?
So they won't be a perfect match.
Oh, good.
The deer have been back.
See, they're enjoying the impatience.
Good lord, they're very much enjoying the impatience.
Would be nice to eat the crabgrass.
Now, this is the other.
This is the royal rain, you can't tell.
You'll have a better look at it in the fall, I promise.
You can get a closer look.
This is the darker foliage on it and that pretty red berries that they have.
It's a very nice looking crabapple.
This is not the time of year to be appreciating it though.
So yeah, this one, not the same as the royal raindrops, but it's just in better shape.
It is much smaller, similar color though, and it's got the fruit on it.
So it is persistent.
Yeah, it's a close enough match.
Only downside to it is that it might flower at slightly different times than the royal
raindrops, but oh well.
Let's set this down over here.
Don't know if I'm going to be planting things up quite yet.
I don't feel like making a mess right now, but it would be nice.
Those grasses, they need to get out of those little containers.
That's that one beautiful plant.
I did end up growing one of the bobo hydrangeas when I went back.
So I was just like, you know what?
They're so awesome.
I love bobos.
I haven't really tried them in containers like I have a lot of my others.
Over here, I have all these guys, quick fire fabs in containers, and they're okay.
The strawberry vanilla has been my favorite for containers so far, but I really want to
give a bobo a try.
So that's what's going on there.
Grab that one.
And then I got these sedums in here, which is autumn fire.
Yeah, $7.98, not six bucks.
Yeah.
Oh, you want to see the color?
Here we go.
Really pretty color on that one.
Love a sedum for late summer, fall stuff.
I grabbed one of those nice, uh, well, nice-ish, you know, they're okay.
The winter green boxwoods for $16.88.
I thought that was a nice deal.
And then I did grab a Heliconia.
So this wasn't at Lowe's or Home Depot.
This is at a nursery that's out in that area, Chesterfield Valley Nursery, a local nursery.
They had two of these guys for $30.
I mean, great deal.
Great deal.
And nobody sells Heliconias that I've been able to find in the St. Louis area except
for this nursery.
And it's the Lady Di, which is just one of my favorites.
I love the Lady Di Heliconia.
So I grabbed that.
And then I also, look at this guy.
Oh, isn't this beautiful?
Isn't it so pretty?
You can't see the tag, but you don't need to.
It's Snowbank Brugmansia.
It's a pretty common of the variegated type Brugmansias.
It's a more whitish cream variegation, not a loud yellow.
And I think it has a white flower on it.
Whitish orange flower.
Yeah.
That's an angel's trumpet.
And I love angel trumpets.
They are so easy to overwinter.
Really fast growers too.
Okay.
And then the little guys, which you already know.
I grabbed the pink zebra corm, which they just have ornamental corm.
It's called pink striped zebra.
It's on its last leg, but that's okay.
And then I grabbed the steel bait.
This is, what is it called?
Dark side of the moon.
Is that what it was?
Dark side of the moon.
So this is, I believe, a 2026 plant of the year from Proven Winners.
And it's gotta be fun trying to still be in a pot.
So that's why I got it.
Good colors, I think, to work with.
Good textures.
There's a very small drainage hole.
I should maybe make that bigger.
It's fine.
All right.
I'm gonna get some of the soil in here.
This bucket is sitting out in the rain, so it soils me.
A little wet, but that's okay.
It's not mucky or anything.
Doesn't stink.
Just very moist.
But that's all right.
It's in the bottom of the pot.
And then I have all this over here.
It's the Pro-Mix DX.
I don't know.
It's fine.
It drains well.
And they sell it.
It's some ace hardware next to my house.
So that's what I get.
I can buy it in great big, big bulky bags like this.
Okay.
Not going as far as I would have hoped it would.
That is the only downside to this potting mix.
It's kind of pricey.
So I should probably have used something cheaper for a planter this size.
Didn't really think that one through.
And you got to break all these clumps up too.
It's a compressed brick.
I mean, it doesn't go that far.
You think, oh, it's compressed.
Like, you know, think of a coco coir.
Coconut coir when that's compressed.
You hydrate and get so much more.
No.
I mean, no.
This doesn't expand.
It is what it is.
Got to loosen it up.
And I'm thinking we just throw some stuff in here.
Some color.
Some foliage.
I might have to go grab some more soil.
Yeah.
Let's see what I got.
I don't know.
We'll see.
Maybe I don't need more soil.
So we got this stuff right here, right?
That's that, you want to call it a penstemon?
Not what it is.
Penicetum.
That lovely tall grass is all dried up and kind of crusty looking.
That's going to displace some soil.
This plant is probably going to really appreciate getting into a new container.
Oh, wow.
That is, that is root bound.
I might need to cut that out.
Good lord.
That thing was really in there.
So this is the purple fountain grass, right?
We talked about that.
So it's going to be grown as an annual.
It's not going to be a perennial here.
I'm not all that concerned about making sure the root ball's loosened up on there because,
well, this is pretty much just something we put in here.
Something that's going to die pretty soon.
It's sad, but you know, it looks nice.
I need to get this guy potted up.
It's a Sunfinity bicolor.
Yellow, red bicolor.
Yeah.
So it's, you know, we're re-blooming heliopsis.
It's a nice yellow flower with a dark center.
This guy just needs to go up into a new container.
I've only had it for a couple of weeks.
Like, you know, can't expect it to do anything when it's in that little pot.
Heliopsis, in my experience, do not like to have their roots messed with very much.
I'm going to be very gentle here because I do not want this thing to decide to release
all hell on me because I barely touched its roots.
They will throw an absolute fit and just fall over and die and rot.
I'm hoping that that astilbe is going to be a trooper because mostly everything I'm doing
here is going to be pretty drought tolerant.
And the astilbe is going in here and I want to make sure that, you know, it's a fit.
I like this.
I do think that is a very pretty plant.
What's the zone on this one?
Is that a five?
Does it say hardy in zones?
One through?
I can't read that.
Four through nine.
Okay, that's really hardy.
That's a good plant to have in a container, right?
I'm in 6B and saying something's hardy into zone four means it should be able to take
my winters no problem.
Down there.
Oh, I think this is going to be very pretty.
I might need to do a little bit of pruning on this to make room, make some adjustments
right there because I would also like to get a sedum or two in here.
The color of this sedum, that's going to be so nice looking with the foliage on that astilbe.
Isn't that beautiful?
I think that looks really nice.
I do still want a trailer.
This is the only trailer I have and I think that that's okay.
This is perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
Cindy's Lismakia.
Cindy loves to travel, yet everywhere she goes she dreams of coming home.
What?
What an odd plant tag.
Can you just tell me a little about the plant?
Sometimes referred to as golden gloves, Lismakia.
Spectacular, okay.
All right, there's a lot of information on here other than that it just,
it's an Asian knockout with striking yellow flowers and nice foliage.
That's what it says.
It has very nice foliage on it.
It's a weird label, okay.
Nestled in there, see those flowers?
Nice little yellow flowers.
Nice, got some good color going on here.
I cannot wait for this to open up.
That astilbe, I think that's going to be really pretty when that does some more blooming.
If it does do any more blooming, I'm not sure.
I don't know what's going to happen with that.
I still have the plastic on the pot.
When I buy these pots, they have plastic on them.
I wait until I plant them up to remove that because,
well, you know, may as well help protect the pot for as long as you can.
Just get stuffed up.
Oh, you didn't even get to see the reveal.
There it is, beautiful brownish beige plastic pot.
Okay, now I'm going to take this guy over to where?
Really, I think I'm just going to let it hang out right here for a few days.
It's a nice sunny spot where I know I'll be able to get water to it easily.
That's fine.
I don't care.
In front of that pot's nothing but freaking, you know, sweet potato vines.
So this is good.
Oh, I think that looks nice.
I don't know if I necessarily like it right there.
It's going to end up in the driveway or in the front porch here in a few weeks.
Remember right now it's still mid-August for me.
It's September for y'all.
And I'd like to have this place somewhere probably in the front of my house
late September for some, you know, fall appeal.
And by then it should be looking pretty good.
Okay, yeah, that looks good.
Doesn't that?
I like that for Turbo's shampoo.
I always happen to wash them off.
Yep, that looks nice.
Imagine that with some Lismakia.
Put some more gross down and some color.
I should probably prune off the old flowers there on that Sunfinity.
No, you don't have to.
I think it would be a good idea just to get some more blooms out of it.
So this guy right here.
I talked about while we were at the Home Depot about how well this has already
got its tassels up there.
It's silks are up and doing their thing.
So growth on these, that's done.
They're not growing anymore as far as height is concerned,
but they're still producing their corn.
Now this pink, I actually don't know if this is the Pink Striped Zebra corn.
I just assume it is.
I have some seeds here.
Very old seeds.
I went through my seed collection the other day and I was like,
there's some stuff that maybe I can still plant out this year.
Probably not a great idea, but I have all these marigold seeds.
I could probably still scatter some of those.
And I have all of these.
These seeds are from 2021.
But this says height four to five feet tall.
Well, that's what the tag on this one says too.
Four to five feet tall.
So germination two to three days.
That thing is corn.
As long as it's warm, pretty fast to germinate.
But it's, I just don't know if the daylings are gonna be long enough.
I don't know if the juice will be worth the squeeze.
So like I said, it is mid-August right now.
I could go ahead and plant up some of those.
So seeds and then have a plant that's, I don't know.
Maybe a foot tall come mid to late September.
Or I can just buy this one for six bucks.
That looks like it's been through someone's, you know, wood chipper.
It doesn't look very good, but that's all right.
You can do some cleaning up on it.
It's not that hard to come down here and clean all this brown stuff out.
Easy enough to do that.
And then the other reason that I got it was because this is getting ready to set seed.
You don't know if you'll be able to see that in here.
We shouldn't be moving on.
I'd like to get some more of this brown stuff out first.
Handle what I was talking about before moving on to something new.
That's just stripped right off of there.
See, you can just pull it right off.
It's kind of like cleaning up a Dracaena.
In fact, I think that these type of ornamental corns make a wonderful addition to your garden
if you want something with a tropical flair because they have a similar growth habit.
I don't even think these look like corn.
Never been convinced when I look at them and go, oh, that's corn.
No, it reminds me of a Dracaena.
So this right here, that's an ear of corn.
I don't know if that's ready to...
The silks on that are pretty dried up.
This one, I don't know, it might be ready to go.
I'd be surprised.
It seems early.
No, no, not yet.
Not yet.
I'll bring you in close so you can see what I was looking at.
This is not the way to test to see if your corn's ready to go.
Since this won't be one that's being eaten, it doesn't matter that much.
Can you see in there?
So that's going to be the corn.
The corn kernels.
It's just not there quite yet.
You can see them, right?
Getting real close.
That's as close as you're going to get, apparently.
Yeah, so each one of these silks that's up here is attached to a different kernel.
And every single one of those, I can dry and use the seed.
And I'm fairly certain that $6 for this is probably about what I paid for those packets of seeds.
So I just figured, well, just get this and then save the seeds, right?
Why not?
I know it looks like it just came off a week-long vendor in Vegas,
but I think it's still a good enough looking plant.
I like my way of explaining that my standards are just very low when the price is right.
So yeah, I'm not necessarily thinking that I'm going to be using this in any type of
arrangements or containers.
Maybe I should go ahead and bump it up into its own larger pot.
I'm not really thinking I should mess with it that much when it has
at least two ears that are getting ready to produce on there.
There's one right here.
I think there's another one on the other side.
Yeah, there is.
There's a small one right there.
Then this one right here should be doing something fairly soon.
Even if only one of them ends up producing some kernels,
even if it's only at 50%, then boom, I've got some fresh seed for next year.
Because I don't, I don't know.
I don't have that much faith in the ones that I have germinating very well next year.
I need to do a lot of seed starting next year,
but I'm probably gonna do mostly it just like scattering.
I don't have time for that seed starting stuff.
It's fun, but it's a space thing.
I like to have these around though.
That's what I was getting at.
I like to have these around for fall gardening,
and I think that the pink striped horn is just a really pretty plant.
Hence why I've just spent so much time talking about it.
I think it's a, it's a looker.
Not this one, but when they're nice and healthy, they look, they look great.
I was about to say that that is everything except I forgot about a couple others.
Ones that I should not have had sitting out over where they were.
It's been so rainy and gloomy.
I didn't think a thing of it.
This is just a philodendron Brazil,
and I got it because I thought it had a nice looking variegation.
I just love a philodendron.
I do need to make sure.
This doesn't have a drainage dish on it, does it?
No.
Anytime I buy one of these that has one of those attached drainage dishes,
I take that off immediately.
They just do better when you don't water them very much.
That's just been my experience.
Yeah, there's one called Cream Splash.
That's probably my favorite, and it looks kind of like this.
Kind of like this leaf right here, but it has more white in it.
But, uh, I don't know.
I haven't seen that one for sales to stores.
This one is just, just your standard Brazil,
and for some reason it was just shouting at me.
I don't know why.
I was just in the mood for variegation, apparently.
Yeah, so that's that.
And then over here, last and certainly not least,
I would say the best bargain I got was all this beautiful Mondo grass.
I love Mondo grass.
There you go.
Look at that.
Oh, what a lovely background.
Look at that.
That'd make for a nice picture.
It's Opiopogon japonicus.
Why does it say dwarf Mondo grass?
Why nanus?
Oh, why bi.
That's a, that's, never mind.
I wasn't working with my dyslexia there.
It's clumper, great ground cover,
steppable to an extent, deer resistant, very drought tolerant.
Depending on where you live, evergreen, where we are,
these do die back when we have really harsh winters.
They can take a good amount of shade.
I wouldn't put them into the full sun because they'll likely scorch.
They tend to be pretty slow growers.
So they're usually more on the pricey side.
That's why everyone's like, oh, hey, $2.49 a pop.
Hell yeah.
I'm going to take these and probably actually use them in potted things.
Things I can move into the greenhouse during the wintertime.
But I will likely, I'll probably pop a few of these out into the landscape too.
Generally considered hardy to zone six and up.
Zone seven and up is really your safest bet with them.
So yeah, that's just one little thing to note.
I think there are even some Mono grass you can grow in zone five.
I don't know.
I'm not in zone five.
A very, very, very nice plant to have.
These divide up.
That was the other thing.
So each one of these right here, I can divide these up into, I don't know,
I could probably get a good 20 plants out of all this.
Well, not out of all this, out of this one right here.
Could easily get probably 200 plants out of all of this.
And then have to wait a couple of years for them to fill out to have this kind of volume.
But you can put these in areas like I have a spot in my garden.
It's very difficult to get plants to grow and it's underneath a maple tree.
And I'm thinking Mono grass might just be the ticket.
That might be what can actually do something over there because
it's not going to throw an absolute fit about the dryness because the
maple tree steals all the water from everything over there.
But Mono grass, it may not.
These also make very nice companion plants for bonsais and just other plant arrangements.
Mono grass is fine for a house plant too.
You can take these inside and they just hang out.
You just have a cute little pot of grass.
Lots of different types.
This is your dwarf right here.
There's a black one that's really, really pretty.
I like that black one a lot.
I just went for these because, you know, 50% off.
Oh, what's the height on this one?
It's like six inches, if even, I'm guessing.
Two to four inches.
Yeah, really, really small.
Very small.
There's a nice picture.
Look at that.
That's beautiful, isn't it?
Terrible picture.
Horrible quality.
You get it.
It's a nice looking plant.
Very happy about having those to work with.
Man, the caladium is really putting on a show.
Holy freaking crap.
This thing is a beast.
That's a 12 inch pillow right there.
Oh, it's 14 inch.
Goodness.
All right.
Happy caladium.
I have to come in here and do some pruning.
Shading my lilies.
All right, what I would call that a success.
I have some cleaning up to do.
Some more pottings I'm going to be working on here over the weekend
before I film the garden tour, which will have been out already.
This is wacky.
I don't normally do this.
I'm sorry.
Normally a Saturday video, a vlog is what's gone on most recently in life,
not stuff from nearly a month ago.
It's just the way things had to work out this month.
It's not a lot of commitments coming up here.
But the vlog that comes out after this one should be very current and up to date.
No, it's not that bad of a thing.
You get extra outdoor time moving into the fall here.
So you'll be able to see my struggles a month after they've happened.
That's nice.
No, like I said, this is kind of a one time deal, which is weird.
Maybe it's not a one time deal.
It means I'll have to take two weeks off from vlogging to catch up.
And I don't know about that.
That would feel weird.
I don't want to get out of the rhythm.
OK, he's done.
You ready to go inside?
You want some food?
I know it's dinner time.
Let's go feed you.
Oh, hey, thanks for hanging out.
Are you starting fall gardening yet?
What do you like to do for fall gardening?
Just some plants you like to have in your containers.
Good sales that you're watching out for at this time of year.
There's so much.
This is what I usually tell people.
Like, it's good.
Trees and shrubs in the spring and summer.
Plant them whenever you want to.
But fall, fall is a beautiful time because you can buy them in late summer on clearance
and then plant them on up when it cools off.
The ground's still nice and warm from the heat and everything.
The plants get going a lot faster the next year or four.
And you get them a lot cheaper.
As long as it's plants that's fully hardy to your zone.
I would never plant a crepe myrtle here this time of year.
Those need to go in the ground early.
Anything that's marginally hardy, you gotta do that in the spring.
OK, yeah.
Hey, as always, and most importantly, everybody, keep on growing.
Bye, bye.
