Let's learn Japanese through the story "Taketori Monogatari" ("The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter") / "Kaguya-hime" ("Princess Kaguya")
I've rewritten the entire story using JLPT N3 grammar points, vocabulary, and kanji.
This is only part 1 of many more to come!

AI生成This video provides a Japanese language lesson using the classic folktale \"The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter\" (Kaguya-hime). The instructor uses the story's narrative to explain specific JLPT N3 grammar points and vocabulary while incorporating a sponsorship segment featuring Japanese snack boxes.

instead and that can also mean as usual and this通り通り
will also appear in this text and you need this for jlpdm 3
but i will explain it when we get to it. So いつものように山へ行くと
一本の光る竹を見つけました
so as usual he went to the mountains
and he found a single bamboo stalk that was like shining
山へ行くと we're going to look at this と you know noun と noun that means and
right 猫と犬 cats and dogs if you don't know this
と
as a conditional form which means if or whenever
then you might want to check out the lesson
i made a long time ago for example you turn off the light and then the room becomes dark
so something that happens naturally because of the action in front of と
when you do a or if you do a
b naturally happens and we often use と for that
for example if you don't use an umbrella you'll get wet
傘を使わないと濡れるよ if it's raining
but for jlpdm 3 you have to also memorize that after と
usually there is something surprising at least to the speaker
so おじいさん goes to mountains every day
and usually bamboos look normal
but this time it was shining and that's surprising
so the verb in the dictionary form と
and then the verb in the second clause would be in the past tense
for example いたいましたでした
here you can also use たら by the way and say
山に行ったら一本の光る竹を見つけた
and たら is more casual than と in this situation
you will see more examples of と to indicate the speaker's surprise
later in the story
so 光る by the way is to shine or to light up
おじいさんはこれは不思議だと思いながら竹を切ってみると
中から小さな女の子が出てきました
so 不思議な mysterious
and then 思いながら
this is maybe a JLPT book
the masu form stem 話す would be 話します
見る would be 見ます
anyway get rid of ます and then add ながら
and that means while doing something simultaneously
this is the key simultaneously you do something else
so I eat while watching TV
テレビを見ながら食べる
or I exercise while listening to music
音楽を聞きながら運動する
so 思いながら while thinking
also remember that these two actions
the action that's attached to ながら
and the action in the other clothes
would be done by the same person
you don't use ながら to mean
oh you do this while I go somewhere
and you might be thinking
then how do you say that
we will get to that
but you can't wait for it
the answer is 間に
anyway so this while doing something at the same time
might be more
jail pity and fool level
but there is also ながらも
you add も
も can also mean even though even
so ながらも would mean even while
or even though I am doing this thing
so for example 思いながら
and 思いながらも kind of different
and this ながらも is usually used to show
the contrast between two things
so if I hear 思いながらも
sounds like the speaker knows that
what they are about to do
kind of goes against the thought
so even though I know it's bad
I will do something
or even though I think it's bad
I will still do it
しないほうがいいと思いながらも
してしまった
so I was thinking I shouldn't do it
I still did it
so it's kind of like despite
was like shows the conflict
but here without も
so there is no
oh I shouldn't do it
or anything like that
while he was thinking
in English maybe it's not best to translate
like while thinking
but basically he was having this thought
at the same time
while cutting the bamboo
so 竹を切ってみると
so てみる by the way is like to try
like I will just try cutting it
why not
切ってみると
so this と is the same
something surprising happens after cutting
中から from inside
小さな女の子が出てきました
a small girl came out
a small girl appeared from inside
so that is shocking isn't it
so 切ってみると出てきました
女の子は手の幅ほどの大きさです
okay so 幅
this is also JLPTN 3 level I would say
width so from side to side length
and then 程
we will see 程 again everywhere in this text
here 程 means around approximately
it's used to describe rough estimates of the amount
you know length height
but my hand probably is not as big as your hand
you know
so it's just a rough estimate
so the girl was about the width of a hand
but it's not very accurate
here instead of 程 you can also say くらい
手の幅くらいの大きさです
and 程 is more formal than くらい
both 程 and くらい are used with like amount right
so or how long
so like 10 minutes
like 5 minutes 10 minutes
so the ramen is around 3 minutes
ラーメンは3分くらいでできます
or ラーメンは3分ほどでできます
the で is used because I want to say
in 3 minutes you'll be ready
so yeah I'll be there in about 5 minutes
5分ほどで着きます
5分くらいで着く
all right
おじいさんはこの子は天からの贈り物に違いないと思って
女の子を家に連れて帰ることにしました
so the old man thought the child must be a gift from heaven
天 heaven
贈り物
we use プレゼント a lot honestly
贈り物 is definitely less common than プレゼント nowadays
so it's more formal gift than like when the company gifts
you know the client or when it's customary
or they do it out of politeness
it's more the word 贈り物 is preferred
for example birthday present
we say 誕生日のプレゼント
but still 贈り物 is a word that you probably need to remember
so there is 贈る in this kanji that means to send
like 手紙を贈る to send a letter
and then there is also 贈る which means to gift
so two different kanji
but yeah
and then 物 is a thing right
so a thing that you give
anyway
にちがいない
this is another grammar point that you need to remember
so ちがい means difference
like spot the difference
we say ちがいを見つけて
noun にちがいない
i-adjective にちがいない
おいしい にちがいない
it must be delicious
な-adjective then you remove な
so 静かな
it must be quiet
and i say must but i mean like
must is in
i'm certain that or
there's no doubt that
like without a doubt it is
and then verb にちがいない
a verb in the informal conjugations
the verb can be in the dictionary form
or in the simple past tense
so not the must form
i'm certain that he lied
you say 嘘をついた
にちがいない
嘘をつく to lie
conjugate like 嘘をついた
lied in the past tense
so informal version right
not 嘘をつきました
and then you can't add にちがいない
but anyway
noun にちがいない
this is also appears a lot in the text
it must be a gift from heaven
like i am certain it's a gift from heaven
because i mean yeah
it's crazy
so old man thought that
and then he decided to take her home
i mean you can't abandon like a tiny baby
it's basically she's a baby by the way
she's not like a tiny grown up lady
she looks like a baby
so you can't really abandon
you cut the bamboo
you gotta take responsibility
so 女の子を家に連れて帰ることにしました
so 連れる is to take along
like somebody right
連れて帰る
actually you take somebody home
so there is 連れて行く
to take somebody
somewhere
usually like away from your starting point
and then 連れてくる
is when like somebody brings
somebody else to you
or where you are
or you are bringing that person with you
and then 連れて帰る
same but you go home with somebody
okay so ことにする
連れて帰ることにしました
ことにする
usually it's in the past tense
ことにした
or ことにしました
and it means have decided to do something
so it's kind of like the verb 決める
決めた
決めました
here instead of 連れて帰ることにしました
you could say 連れて帰ることに決めた
so verb と決めた
or verb ことに決めた
dictionary form ことに決めた
but it's less natural
決める sounds more like I made a decision dot
so it's less common than I decided to
make up your mind to do something
you usually use this verb
and then ことにする
but I'd say 決める is often used on its own
so for example
like make up your mind
just hurry up
you can say
早く決めて
何でもいいから決めて
I don't care what you choose
just choose
like just make up your mind
or 時間を決める
to decide on a time
then usually ことにした
ことにしました
in the past tense
you might also hear ことにしています
then it means you made up your mind
you decided to do something
and then you are still practicing that
like you are still following the decision
for example
you decided to sleep by 11 pm
and then you still do that
you know
then you can say
11時までには寝ることにしています
so it's like showing your habit
おじいさんの妻もとても喜んで
その子を育てることになりました
so おじいさんは女の子を
連れて帰ることにしました
so that was his decision alone
right
and next
おじいさんの妻もとても喜んで
その子を育てることになりました
so ことにしました
versus ことになりました
so する versus なる
する means to do right
you decide to do it
you choose to do it
なる means to become
and usually it's not really about your intention
it's just like something
like the traffic light
it becomes red from yellow
黄色から赤になる
赤になった
right
and when we say ことになりました
or ことになった
usually it implies that the decision has been made
by a group or it's been decided
like the society
the government
whatever decided
and it wasn't really your decision
then you also use ことになりました
so when a decision is made
for example
in a company
you probably say ことになりました
when you don't want to necessarily show
that it's you who decided it
then you also can choose to say ことになりました
and also just like ことにしています
like you decided
and then you still choose to do something
ことになっています
it's been decided
and other people have to follow it
so usually when talking about a rule
and you know it's a rule
like it's been decided that you shouldn't
it doesn't have to be a law
but it's like you know rule
or like an unspoken rule
or something that you should do
because people expect you to
all right
there's a lot more to cover
but I am getting a little bit tired
so I'm going to do part one
part two or three probably
