Archaeology is often seen as an exact science of the past, but among its discoveries there
are some that don't fit the bigger picture.
Strange artifacts, unexplained technologies, and places whose origins and purposes still
have no clear answers.
This is where the line between facts, theories, and speculation begins to blur, and our usual
understanding of history starts to break down.
Hello everyone, you're watching Pepakor, and today we're diving into the archaeology iceberg.
Level 1.
The Serapium of Saqqara.
An underground complex discovered in 1850 by the French archaeologist Auguste Mariette.
During excavations in the desert, he noticed an object sticking out of the sand.
After clearing the area, it turned out to be the entrance to an underground chamber.
Further work revealed a network of burial rooms, which later became known as the Serapium.
The complex consists of a tunnel about 240 meters long, with chambers located along its
sides.
Inside them are 24 sarcophagi, each around 4 meters long and nearly 2.5 meters wide,
weighing about 80 tons.
The sarcophagi were carved from granite with remarkable precision, and carefully placed
inside the rooms.
According to one of the main theories, these chambers were used for the burial of the sacred
Apis bulls, animals that ancient Egyptians considered embodiments of a deity.
However, when the sarcophagi were examined, they were found to be empty, which led to
many different assumptions.
One theory suggests that these structures may not have been used only as tombs.
In particular, there is a hypothesis that granite, under certain conditions, can create
weak electrical effects, and the sarcophagi may have served some purpose related to storing
energy.
At the same time, there is no evidence explaining how this could have worked or been used.
Another question concerns the transportation of such massive blocks.
Moving sarcophagi weighing around 80 tons through underground tunnels seems like a difficult
task for the technology of that era.
Because of this, some theories suggest the use of unknown technologies, or even outside
assistance.
It is also noted that in some parts of the complex, there are no traces of soot usually
left behind by torches.
This is often used as an argument that other methods of lighting may have been used in
complete darkness.
Another explanation for the empty sarcophagi is that the complex may have been looted long
before its discovery.
However, there are no recorded sources or direct evidence confirming this theory.
The Golden Eye Prosthesis of Shahr-e Sokhta
In 2002, archaeologists in Iran discovered the remains of a woman who had lived around
4,800 years ago.
The find had one unusual feature.
One eye socket was empty, while the other contained a prosthesis.
The prosthesis was an artificial eye made from a mixture of bitumen and animal fat.
Its surface was covered with a thin layer of gold.
The construction fit the shape of the eye socket precisely and had a pattern designed
to imitate a human eye.
It is considered one of the earliest known eye prostheses in history.
The Great Sphinx of Giza
One of the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt, it is located on the Giza Plateau near
the Pyramid of Khafre.
The statue depicts a figure with the body of a lion and a human head.
It is still unknown exactly whom it represents, although it is most often associated with
the pharaoh Khafre.
There is also a theory that hidden chambers or passages may exist beneath the sphinx.
These assumptions have been discussed for a long time, but to this day they remain unconfirmed.
Another mystery is the missing nose.
While most of the statue survived relatively well, there is no exact information explaining
how the nose was lost.
One commonly mentioned theory claims it may have been damaged during the campaign of Napoleon
Bonaparte.
The Toro Muerto Petroglyphs
A massive complex of rock carvings in Peru.
It covers an area of around 5 square kilometers and contains more than 3,000 stones engraved
with images.
The carvings depict animals, people, and a large number of strange symbols.
The site was discovered in 1941.
After years of study, archaeologists still could not determine exactly why these images
were created or what they truly meant.
Unlike many other similar monuments around the world where the images can often be interpreted,
a significant portion of the symbols here remain unexplained.
Because of this, some theories suggest that part of the markings could represent an unknown
system of symbols, or even a language that has not yet been deciphered.
Additional interest comes from the fact that some carvings appear to align with astronomical
events, such as the movement of the sun or the positions of certain stars.
This is often compared to the Nazca Lines, where a similar connection with celestial
objects is believed to exist.
Some of the carvings are made up of repeating zigzag patterns.
Combined with the unexplained symbols, this has led to theories that the petroglyphs may
have been connected to rituals, songs, or certain forms of information transfer.
Another theory suggests that the images are a visual representation of rituals linked
to the cosmological beliefs of the Wari culture, which once existed in the region.
The Aika Stones.
A collection of stones engraved with unusual images discovered in Peru.
The carvings show scenes that appear highly unusual.
Humans are depicted alongside dinosaurs, and in some images they even seem to interact
with them, including scenes where a person appears to be riding a dinosaur.
More than 50,000 of these stones have reportedly been found.
Each one contains different scenes.
This is what raises questions, since dinosaurs went extinct more than 60 million years ago,
while humans appeared much later.
Because of this, several theories emerged.
One theory suggests that the stones are forgeries created relatively recently.
Another conspiracy theory claims the images may have been made by some ancient civilization
that supposedly existed at the same time as dinosaurs.
There is also the suggestion that the images could have originated from knowledge or legends
passed down through generations.
Trepanation of the Skull.
These were surgical procedures practiced by ancient Andean civilizations.
The process involved drilling a hole in the skull or removing part of it.
It is believed that such operations were performed for medical reasons, such as head injuries,
fractures, or severe pain.
Despite primitive conditions and the absence of modern medicine, archaeological discoveries
show that these procedures could actually be successful.
Some skulls contain signs of healed bone tissue, indicating that people survived these operations
and continued living afterward.
The Ellora Caves.
A complex of 34 temples carved directly into rock in India.
They were created between the 6th and 9th centuries.
What makes this place unique is that three religions coexist there at once.
Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
The complex is located on the side of a mountain, and consists of a massive system of temples,
halls, and passageways.
The scale and complexity of the construction make it one of the largest rock-cut architectural
sites in the world.
The exact method of construction is still not fully understood.
The temples were carved directly into solid rock, forming not only rooms, but also highly
detailed architectural elements.
There are also theories about additional underground passages and chambers.
In the 19th century book, The Secret Doctrine, hidden spaces beneath the complex were described,
along with references to legends about secret cities such as Shambhala.
These theories mention the possibility of unknown artifacts.
During research, some underground structures and passageways were indeed discovered, but
due to the enormous scale and complicated layout of the complex, it has not been fully
explored.
Another issue is the instability of certain sections where there is a risk of collapse,
limiting further investigations.
Ötzi.
In September 1991, a German couple of climbers went on a regular hike in the Alps in the
Ötztal area near the border of Austria and Italy, at an altitude of around 3,200 meters.
During the route, they noticed a strange object sticking out of the ice.
When they came closer, they saw the upper part of a human body.
It looked as if the person had been trying to escape from an icy trap.
At first, they assumed it was a dead mountaineer, since similar incidents had already happened
in that region.
However, after the body was examined by specialists, an unexpected fact was revealed.
The man had lived around 3,200 BC.
Later, he became known as Ötzi.
The body was preserved in an extraordinary condition.
The skin, hair, and internal organs remained almost completely intact.
Nearby, researchers found clothing and various objects, including tools that had also survived
with little damage.
Even the contents of his stomach were preserved, allowing scientists to determine what he had
eaten before his death.
Such preservation is explained by the fact that the body remained trapped under ice for
a very long time.
Over time, as the glacier melted, it eventually appeared on the surface, where it was discovered.
More detailed examinations later showed that his death had not been accidental.
An arrowhead was found lodged in his left shoulder.
In addition, injuries on the body indicated that shortly before his death, he had likely
been involved in some kind of conflict or fight.
Further analysis revealed another strange detail.
Traces of blood from at least four different people were found on his clothing and weapons.
This suggests that before dying, he had probably been involved in several violent encounters.
Researchers also determined that the fatal arrow had been shot from below.
This may indicate that the attacker pursued him through the mountains and chose the right
moment to strike.
The main theory suggests that he may have encountered another group of people, hunters
or robbers, and was killed as a result of that conflict.
Mosquitia
Deep within the jungles of the Mosquitia region in Honduras, archaeologists spent many years
searching for a place that had long been considered a legend.
It was said to be a lost city mentioned on ancient maps.
For decades, expeditions failed to produce results.
The situation changed in 2012, when during another expedition, researchers discovered
traces of a previously unknown civilization.
During the investigation, various objects were found at the site, including a structure
resembling a pyramid, as well as artifacts preserved in remarkably good condition.
Particular attention was drawn to the stone sculptures.
A total of 52 objects were discovered which, according to available information, had never
been looted or disturbed by outsiders.
Among them was a figure depicting a jaguar man.
It may have been used for ritual purposes.
Based on the discoveries, researchers believe this culture had its own beliefs and ceremonies
that differed from others known in the region.
It was also noted that the site looked as if it had been abandoned suddenly, leaving
behind objects that may have held sacred significance.
Later, the area became associated with the legend of the so-called City of the Monkey
God.
Level 2
Dwarka
Ancient Indian texts have for many years mentioned a sacred city known as Dwarka.
It is described as a large and wealthy city located on an island that was eventually swallowed
by the sea.
For a long time, this was considered a myth until underwater research was conducted off
the coast of modern-day Dwarka during the 1980s.
At depths of around 9 to 12 meters, archaeologists discovered remains of structures, walls, foundations
of buildings, and stone formations resembling columns.
Stone objects interpreted as elements of port infrastructure were also found, which may
indicate the existence of an important trading center in that area.
It is believed that these remains could be around 4,000 years old.
At the same time, there is still no full agreement among researchers.
Some believe these ruins are the ancient Dwarka described in the texts, while others think
it may instead be another previously unknown city.
The Maine Penny
A Norwegian medieval coin discovered in the state of Maine on August 18, 1957.
The coin dates back to the Viking Age and is considered to be of Norwegian origin.
Its discovery attracted attention because it may suggest possible contact between Vikings
and the indigenous peoples of North America long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
The Alexamenos Graffito
The Alexamenos Graffito is a drawing found in Rome and dated to around 200 AD.
It is considered one of the earliest known depictions connected to crucifixion.
The image shows a man standing before a crucified figure with the head of a donkey, seemingly
worshiping it.
Nearby, there is an inscription, usually translated as,
Alexamenos Worships His God
It is believed that this was intended as a mockery of Christianity.
During that period, Christians faced persecution, and images like this may have been used to
ridicule them.
The Terracotta Army
In 1974, Chinese farmers were digging a well when they uncovered an underground chamber
filled with clay figures.
It was not just a few statues, there turned out to be thousands of them.
Later, it was revealed that this was the so-called Terracotta Army, located near the tomb of
the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, who ruled during the 3rd century BC.
The complex includes thousands of warrior figures, and each one differs in details such
as facial expression, hairstyle, clothing, and weapons.
The statues were created with remarkable precision, making them appear highly realistic.
Some of the figures survived completely intact, while others were damaged or destroyed.
This is sometimes viewed as a possible sign that outsiders may have entered the site in
ancient times.
It is believed that the statues were placed beside the tomb in order to accompany and
protect the emperor after death.
The Curse of Tutankhamen
A legend connected to the discovery of the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen.
In 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter discovered and opened the tomb, after which stories began
spreading about a series of mysterious deaths among members of the expedition.
One of the most famous cases was the death of George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon,
the British aristocrat who financed the expedition.
He died shortly after the tomb was opened, reportedly from an infection caused by an
insect bite.
Later, other people connected to the research also died, including radiologist Archibald
Douglas Reed and archaeologist Arthur Mace.
After these events, the press Activno spread the idea of a pharaoh's curse.
The story quickly became famous around the world.
Later, a more rational explanation appeared.
It was suggested that dangerous microorganisms could have remained trapped inside the sealed
tomb for thousands of years.
Out of the 58 people present during the excavations, 8 died within the following 12 years.
Nan Madal
It's a complex of structures in the Pacific Ocean located on a coral reef in Micronesia.
It consists of 92 artificial islets built from basalt blocks that can weigh up to around
50 tons.
The city covers an area of approximately 18 square kilometers and some of its walls reach
heights of 15 meters.
It is believed to have been constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries.
The structures were built from massive stone blocks stacked on top of one another without
the use of modern technology.
Research using LiDAR scanning has suggested that additional structures may exist beneath
the surface, which had not previously been recorded.
This indicates that the complex could be more extensive and complicated than originally
believed.
The main mystery is the method of construction.
Transporting such enormous blocks across water and placing them onto a coral reef would have
been an extremely difficult task.
One theory suggests that bamboo rafts may have been used for transportation, however
modern attempts to recreate this process have not produced convincing results.
Among local residents, there are also stories about strange phenomena including lights seen
beneath the water.
Legends speak of brothers with special abilities who were supposedly able to move the stones.
It is also noted that the inhabitants of Nan Madal eventually abandoned the city for unknown
reasons, leaving it behind without explanation.
The Dead Sea Scrolls
Ancient texts more than 2,000 years old.
They were discovered in 1947 near Qumran.
According to one version of the story, everything began with a shepherd searching for a lost
goat who accidentally came across a series of caves.
Inside, around 900 manuscripts were found.
Among them were texts connected to the Hebrew Bible, along with other documents that had
previously been unknown.
Some of the scrolls contain additional descriptions of the beliefs and rules followed by various
religious communities of that era.
Certain texts are considered controversial because they describe aspects of religious
life that were not included in later canonical versions.
Particular attention is given to the so-called Temple Scroll.
It was written on animal skin and was found in remarkably good condition.
According to researchers, its preservation was so extraordinary that it almost looked
as if the text had been written recently.
Çatalhöyük
In 1958, archaeologist James Mellart discovered an ancient settlement in Turkey known as Çatalhöyük.
This site changed the understanding of early civilizations because its structure was very
different from that of typical ancient cities.
The settlement existed from around 7,300 to 5,600 B.C. and had a population of nearly
8,000 people.
Its main feature was the absence of streets.
Houses were built directly against one another, forming a single massive structure, and people
entered them through the roofs using ladders.
Another unusual feature was the burial system.
Residents buried their dead beneath the floors of their homes.
This meant that throughout their lives, people were literally living above the burials of
previous generations.
It is also noted that at some point, the settlement was abandoned.
The exact reasons remain unknown.
Among the possible explanations are climate change, worsening living conditions, or other
factors that may have forced the inhabitants to leave the area.
The Graubauer Man
On April 26, 1952, a worker named Ty Warsai was cutting peat in a bog in Denmark when
his tool struck something unusual.
A human face appeared in the ground.
According to descriptions, the expression looked frozen and tense, as if the person
had experienced something terrifying before death.
Later, it was discovered that the body belonged to a man who had lain in the bog for more
than 2,000 years.
The discovery became known as the Graubauer Man.
Due to the special conditions of the bog environment, especially its high acidity, the body was
preserved almost completely.
The skin, hair, nails, and internal organs remained intact, allowing researchers to conduct
detailed examinations.
It was determined that he had been around 30 to 35 years old at the time of death.
Scientists were also able to identify his last meal, which consisted of a mixture of
seeds.
During examination, a deep cut stretching from ear to ear was discovered.
Based on this, one theory suggests that he may have been killed as part of a ritual sacrifice.
Boskop
In 1913, archaeologists in the Boskop region of South Africa discovered fragments of a
human skull that immediately appeared unusual.
Over the next several years, researchers reconstructed the fined piece by piece like a puzzle.
And by 1915, they had created a more complete version of the skull.
Once assembled, it was revealed to be approximately 25% larger than an average human skull.
At first, scientists assumed this might be linked to hydrocephalus, a condition in which
fluid accumulates inside the skull.
However, further studies uncovered other similar skulls in the same region, casting doubt on
that explanation.
This led to speculation that a group of people with unusually large skulls may once have
lived there.
Ruins and burial sites were also discovered near the area.
In one burial, oriented toward the east, another enlarged skull was found.
Because of this, several theories emerged.
One theory suggests that this may have been a separate group of humans with unique developmental
traits, possibly even with more advanced brains.
A more controversial theory claims that some form of body modification or experimentation
may have taken place, although no evidence supporting such ideas has ever been found.
The Black Sarcophagus of Alexandria.
In 2018, workers in Alexandria discovered a massive black granite sarcophagus buried
around 5 meters underground.
Its dimensions were approximately 2.6 meters long, 1.6 meters wide, and 1.8 meters high
with a weight of nearly 30 tons.
It was the largest sarcophagus ever found in that area.
What attracted particular attention was the fact that it had remained completely sealed
for more than 2,000 years, something extremely rare in Egypt, where most tombs had been opened
and looted in ancient times.
Because of the size and condition of the sarcophagus, theories appeared suggesting it could be connected
to Alexander the Great.
This drew major public attention, and many expected that something extraordinary would
be found inside.
On July 20th, 2018, the sarcophagus was opened.
Inside, there were no treasures or valuable artifacts.
Instead, researchers found three skeletons submerged in liquid.
Analysis later showed that the remains belonged to two men and one woman.
One of the skeletons showed evidence of an injury, possibly caused by an arrow, while
another displayed signs of surgical intervention.
Some theories suggest these individuals may have died in battle, or that they were members
of a wealthy class buried together.
At the same time, a major question remains.
Why was such an enormous and expensive sarcophagus not accompanied by valuable burial objects
despite the scale of the tomb itself?
Level 3
Nazi Looting
This was a large-scale seizure of artwork and cultural valuables that took place during
World War II.
Nazi Germany systematically removed paintings, sculptures, and other objects from occupied
territories.
Some of these items were simply confiscated, while others were purchased at extremely low
prices.
These transactions were effectively forced, since the owners were under pressure and had
little to no real choice.
It is believed that these actions were aimed not only at gaining profit, but also at stripping
entire nations of their cultural heritage.
Art collections were viewed as symbols of status and influence.
After the war ended, it became clear that millions of works of art had disappeared.
Some of them were eventually recovered, but a significant number are still considered
lost today.
Mummies in Europe
This is a story connected to a misunderstanding of a word.
Originally, the word mummy came from Arabic and referred to bachumen, a substance used
in medicine.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, the meaning was misinterpreted.
People began believing that Egyptian mummies themselves possessed healing properties.
As a result, by the 15th century, ground-up mummies were being used as medicine.
This powder was prescribed for many illnesses, ranging from headaches to stomach problems.
It was also believed to help treat more serious diseases.
The demand became so high that Egyptian burial sites began to be looted on a massive scale.
When real mummies became harder to obtain, some merchants started creating fakes.
They used the bodies of people who had either been recently killed or had died not long
before, then presented them as ancient mummies and sold them as medicine.
Giant Skeletons
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, reports periodically appeared in different countries
across the Americas, including Ecuador, Peru, the United States, and Mexico, describing
discoveries of unusually large skeletons.
These cases attracted attention and became the basis for discussions about the possible
existence of humans of extraordinary height.
For example, in 1926 in Ecuador, bones were discovered that were attributed to a person
approximately 3 meters tall.
In the 16th century, large ribs found in parts of Peru were also linked to beings of unusual
size.
Between 1911 and 1931, reports from a cave in the state of Nevada described the discovery
of a skeleton around 2.5 meters tall.
Such findings led to theories that a separate group of people, or even an entire race of
giants, may once have existed.
These ideas were widely discussed and spread over time.
However, closer examination later revealed that many of these discoveries were either
hoaxes or animal bones that had initially been misidentified as human remains.
A more realistic explanation is gigantism, a rare medical condition connected to abnormalities
in the pituitary gland.
People with this disorder can grow far taller than average.
There are indeed documented historical cases of gigantism.
The problem is that most discoveries attributed to giants were never subjected to complete
modern scientific analysis using current methods.
Because of this, it is impossible to determine with certainty whether they were genuine cases
of gigantism or simply errors in interpretation.
Ancient Aliens
The ancient alien theory suggests that some early civilizations, such as the Egyptians
or the Maya, may have received assistance from extraterrestrial beings when constructing
massive structures.
Examples usually include pyramids, advanced cities, and various artifacts noted for their
high level of precision.
Supporters of the theory point to the quality of stonework, geometry, and scale of construction,
which they believe are difficult to explain using only the technologies available at the
time.
From this, they conclude that a more advanced civilization may have intervened.
This theory became especially popular during the 20th century.
It is also noted that some ancient construction techniques and engineering methods have not
been fully reconstructed.
For example, the dagger of Tutankhamun was made from meteoritic iron, a material of extraterrestrial
origin, although this alone does not indicate alien involvement.
Supporters also reference myths from different cultures about beings descending from the
sky and bringing knowledge to humanity.
Similar stories appear in many regions of the world.
At the same time, no direct archaeological evidence of extraterrestrial intervention
has ever been discovered.
Many researchers instead view such myths as part of religious traditions and symbolic
beliefs.
Another explanation argues that these achievements were the result of human knowledge and technological
development.
Ancient societies used available tools such as levers, ramps, collective labor, and accumulated
practical experience.
Even so, some details involving precision stonework and the organization of massive
construction projects continue to raise questions, since not all modern attempts to recreate
ancient methods have produced clear or definitive results.
The Disappearance of the Maya Civilization
The Maya Civilization is considered one of the most advanced civilizations in history,
yet the exact reason behind the decline of its cities remains a mystery.
The Maya built major cities across what are now Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of
Honduras and El Salvador.
These cities included temples, pyramids, and astronomical observatories.
Between approximately 250 and 900 AD, many Maya cities reached their peak and contained
populations of tens of thousands of people.
However, between 800 and 1000 AD, a significant number of these cities were abandoned.
Archaeological evidence suggests that inhabitants left behind buildings, including some that
were still under construction.
This process did not happen simultaneously across all regions, making the situation even
more complex.
Today, there are around 90 different theories attempting to explain the collapse.
One of the main theories involves climate change.
Researchers suggest that between 800 and 900 AD, rainfall may have decreased by around
70%, causing severe droughts and resource shortages.
The problem with this explanation is that not all Maya cities show evidence of extreme
drought conditions.
Another theory is connected to overpopulation and resource depletion.
It is believed that deforestation may have reduced agricultural productivity.
At the same time, there is evidence that the Maya were highly skilled in managing agriculture,
which raises questions about this explanation as well.
Another theory points to warfare.
Archaeological discoveries, including inscriptions, indicate conflicts, destruction, and rivalry
between cities.
However, there is no evidence of a single massive war capable of destroying the entire
civilization.
Epidemics are also considered a possible factor.
In one city, unusually high levels of mercury were found in water sources, which may have
affected the population's health.
This theory, however, is relatively new and still requires additional evidence.
The exact reason for the disappearance of the major Maya centers has never been fully
determined, and the collapse remains one of the most debated mysteries in archaeology.
The Nazca Lines
A massive complex of giant drawings and lines etched into the ground in the Nazca Desert
of Peru.
They are believed to have been created between roughly 500 BC and 500 AD.
In total, there are more than 800 figures.
These include geometric shapes, depictions of animals, and human-like silhouettes.
Some of the individual lines stretch up to around 285 meters in length, while the entire
complex covers an area estimated between 500 and 800 square kilometers.
The main mystery of these drawings is that they can only be fully recognized from above.
From the ground, they appear to be little more than random lines.
This raises the question of how ancient people could create such massive and accurate images
without being able to view them in their entirety.
One explanation suggests that nearby hills and elevated terrain were used.
People may have coordinated the work from surrounding high points, while others carried
it out below.
Experiments have shown that this method is indeed possible.
At the same time, the exact purpose of the lines remains unknown.
Proposed explanations include religious rituals, astronomical markers, or signs connected to
natural resources.
No definitive answer currently exists.
Babylonian Tablets
Clay tablets, written in cuneiform, represent one of the earliest systems of writing.
They were used more than 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia.
These tablets recorded many forms of knowledge, including mathematical calculations, astronomical
observations, geographical descriptions, and even predictive texts.
This demonstrates that the civilization had a highly advanced level of development for
its time.
Some discoveries stand out in particular.
One example is Plimpton 322, a mathematical document more than 3,800 years old.
It contains sets of numbers interpreted by some researchers as one of the earliest forms
of trigonometric calculations, suggesting that such methods existed long before their
appearance in Greek science.
Another famous discovery is Imago Mundi, a map more than 3,000 years old that illustrates
Babylonian ideas about the world and surrounding space.
A separate category consists of tablets containing omens and astrological observations.
These texts describe events connected to rulers and states that were associated with astronomical
phenomena such as lunar eclipses.
Some writings claim that certain types of eclipses could predict the death of a ruler
or the fall of a kingdom.
Examples are given involving Elam, Subartu, and Akkad, all of which at different times
experienced defeat and destruction.
The Dendera Light, a relief carved into the temple of the goddess Hathor in Egypt.
It dates roughly from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD.
The image shows an elongated, oval-shaped object, containing a figure resembling a snake.
The object is held by human figures and connected to a column, visually resembling a device
similar to a modern electric lamp.
Because of this resemblance, theories emerged suggesting that the relief may depict some
form of ancient technology related to electricity.
However, there are more widely accepted explanations.
According to these interpretations, the image is symbolic and connected to the religious
beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, particularly myths concerning the birth and manifestation
of deities.
Both interpretations continue to be discussed, since there is still no single universally
accepted explanation for the relief.
Oak Island and the Money Pit.
A small island in Nova Scotia known for its so-called Money Pit, it is a deep shaft in
the ground that became one of the longest-running archaeological and historical mysteries in
North America.
The story began in 1795, when three young men discovered the site and started digging.
They hoped to find treasure, but as they dug deeper, they uncovered layers of soil alternating
with wooden platforms at depths greater than 3 meters.
This gave the impression that the structure had been deliberately constructed.
For more than two centuries, excavations have continued at the site using increasingly advanced
technology.
During these searches, researchers discovered platforms, carved stones, tunnels that unexpectedly
filled with water, and a stone bearing an inscription that has never been deciphered.
Several theories attempt to explain what may lie below.
One of the most famous claims involves pirate treasure connected to William Kidd, who was
executed in 1701.
According to legend, he hid his treasure before capture, and Oak Island is considered one
possible location.
Another theory connects the site to the Knights Templar, or Masonic Organizations.
Supporters point to discoveries of stones marked with symbols resembling Masonic imagery,
as well as plates bearing encrypted inscriptions.
Other objects found on the island include coins, fragments of parchment, and traces
of gold.
However, no direct proof of major treasure or relics has ever been discovered.
There is also speculation that any valuables may have already been removed long ago.
Despite decades of investigation and major financial investments, there is still no definitive
answer as to what lies beneath the island.
The Shroud of Turin, also known as the Turin Shroud, is a linen cloth about four meters
long and roughly one meter wide.
It is believed that it may have been used for the burial of Jesus after the crucifixion.
Visible on the cloth is the image of a human body.
The image depicts a man with wounds that match descriptions of crucifixion, including marks
from nails and damage in the rib area.
However, it still remains unclear how this image was formed.
One of the most unusual aspects of the shroud is that the image possesses unique properties.
During digital analysis, it produced three-dimensional information, allowing researchers to reconstruct
the relief of the body, something not typical for ordinary images.
Traces of a substance identified as human blood type AB were also reportedly found on
the fabric.
The history of the shroud can be traced back to 1354, when it appeared in France.
By 1389, the Bishop of Troy had already declared it a forgery.
Since then, debates surrounding it have continued.
In 1988, radiocarbon dating analysis suggested that the fabric originated during the Middle Ages.
However, in 2022, studies using x-ray methods claimed that the cloth could be around 2,000 years old.
Several theories exist.
One theory suggests that it is an authentic relic connected to Jesus, since the wounds
on the image correspond to biblical descriptions, and particles of pollen from plants native
to the Jerusalem region were allegedly discovered on the fabric.
Another theory considers the shroud to be a medieval forgery.
Even so, the question of how the image was created remains unresolved, as the exact method
is still unknown.
Attempts have been made to reproduce a similar image using modern techniques, but none have
achieved an exact match.
At present, there is no single consensus regarding either the origin or the exact age of the
cloth.
The Drupa Stone Discs
In 1938, Chinese archaeologist Chi-Pu Teh reportedly led an expedition to the Bayankara-Ula
Caves, located on the border between China and Tibet.
According to the accounts, unusual skeletons were discovered inside these caves.
It was claimed that the skeletons were around 1.3 meters tall, yet had disproportionately
large skulls and elongated bodies.
These features immediately sparked controversy and led to various theories regarding their
origin.
Alongside the remains, more than 700 stone discs were allegedly found, specifically 716.
Each disc supposedly had a diameter of about 22 centimeters and a thickness of around 2
centimeters.
Spiral grooves and strange symbols could reportedly be seen on their surfaces.
In 1958, a researcher named Tsum Um Nui, allegedly associated with the Beijing Academy of Sciences,
was said to have deciphered these symbols.
According to him, the discs contained messages describing the crash of an extraterrestrial
spacecraft and beings known as the Drupa that arrived on Earth.
After that, the story began to face skepticism.
It is noted that no confirmed archaeological reports about these discs actually exist.
Most references come from magazine publications from the 1960s and from the book Gods of Exile.
There is also no reliable information about Tsum Um Nui himself.
His existence as a scientist has never been verified.
In 1974, Austrian engineer Ernst Wegerer photographed two discs in the Bampo Museum
in the city of Xi'an.
These photos are considered the only known images of the objects.
However, their quality is poor and does not allow any precise conclusions to be made.
Göbekli Tepe
An archaeological complex in southern Turkey considered one of the oldest known ritual
sites in the world.
Its age is estimated at more than 11,000 years, meaning it was built long before the appearance
of advanced cities and agriculture, likely by groups of hunter-gatherers.
The site itself was first recorded in 1963, but full-scale excavations only began in 1995.
That was when researchers realized a much larger structure lay hidden beneath the ground
than originally expected.
Excavations uncovered at least 20 circular structures containing massive T-shaped stone pillars.
Some of these pillars reach heights of up to 5 meters and weigh between 40 and 60 tons.
Their surfaces are decorated with relief carvings depicting animals, abstract symbols, and human figures.
It has been established that the complex is roughly 6,000 years older than Stonehenge
and the Egyptian pyramids.
One especially unusual feature is that at some point the entire complex was deliberately buried.
Researchers believe this may have been done by the builders themselves, although the reasons
remain unknown.
Theories range from attempts to preserve the site to deliberate concealment.
The location is generally believed to have served as a ritual center where groups of
people gathered.
Animal bones discovered inside the structures are associated with ceremonial practices.
At the same time, no clear traces of residential buildings have been found within the complex.
The Voynich Manuscript
An ancient book consisting of around 240 pages filled with text and illustrations whose meaning
has still not been deciphered.
In 1912, it was purchased by Wilfrid Voynich, from whom the manuscript received its name.
Today, the manuscript is preserved at Yale University.
According to research, it was created sometime between 1404 and 1438.
The book contains a large number of drawings, including unknown plants, astronomical diagrams,
figures of women, and various symbols.
The text is written in a language that does not match any known language.
This conditional language is referred to as Voyniches.
One of the manuscript's unusual features is that the text is written neatly and consistently.
There are almost no visible corrections, which is uncommon for medieval documents, where
edits and mistakes are usually present.
Several theories exist regarding its origin.
One suggests that it is an encrypted text connected to alchemy or medicine.
Another claims it may be an artificially created language.
There were also suggestions that the illustrated plants could represent species unknown in
Europe at that time.
There is even a theory that the manuscript may be a hoax or forgery.
For decades, cryptographers, linguists, and other researchers attempted to decipher it.
However, none of the proposed interpretations has received definitive confirmation.
The Antikythera Mechanism
An ancient artifact discovered in 1901 by sponge divers near the Greek island of Antikythera.
It was found at a depth of around 45 meters among the remains of a Roman shipwreck.
Researchers estimate that the device was created sometime between 205 and 60 BC, making it
more than 2,000 years old.
It was made of bronze and consists of at least 30 interconnected gears.
The mechanism is considered the first analog computing machine.
It was used to calculate astronomical events and could determine the positions of celestial
bodies, predict eclipses, lunar phases, calendar cycles, and the dates of ancient Greek games.
Essentially, the device was capable of forecasting eclipses years in advance,
including cycles lasting up to 19 years.
This appears highly unusual for the technological capabilities of that era.
Another remarkable aspect is that after its creation,
similar devices do not appear again for roughly 1,400 years.
This creates the impression that the technological sophistication used in
its construction did not correspond to its historical period.
One theory suggests that such devices may once have existed in greater numbers,
but none survive to the present day.
However, no other comparable discoveries have been found so far.
Antarctica
It's one of the least explored regions on the planet,
and many discoveries and observations have been associated with it, some of them relatively recent.
One such topic involves the so-called ice gates.
These are large formations that began appearing on satellite images around 2007.
They are most often reported near King George Island.
These structures can reportedly reach around 22 meters in height and up to 76 meters in width.
In some images, the formations appear unusual,
with sections resembling steps or geometric patterns.
Such structures may disappear and reappear in satellite images,
which is associated with the melting and movement of ice.
Antarctica is also connected to subglacial ecosystems.
Since the 1990s, radar studies beneath the ice sheet have revealed more than 400 lakes.
One of the most famous is Lake Vostok,
located beneath nearly 4 kilometers of ice and isolated for approximately 15 million years.
In such conditions, microorganisms capable of surviving in complete darkness,
under extreme pressure, and at very low temperatures were discovered.
These life forms demonstrate a high degree of adaptation to extreme environments.
In 2022, reports also described discoveries connected to ancient vegetation,
including plant remains, pollen, and traces of forest ecosystems.
This suggests that Antarctica's climate was significantly milder in the distant past.
Antarctica is also one of the primary locations where meteorites are discovered.
Since the 1970s, more than 45,000 samples have been found,
including fragments originating from Mars and the Moon.
Another notable feature is the so-called Wilkes Land Anomaly, identified in 2006.
This is an area beneath the ice roughly 500 kilometers in diameter,
with unusual gravitational and magnetic characteristics.
One theory proposes that it may be the result of a massive meteorite impact.
Despite all the research conducted so far,
large portions of Antarctica remain almost entirely unexplored.
The Baltic Sea Anomaly, an object discovered in 2011 on the floor of the Baltic Sea.
The discovery was made by the Swedish exploration team OceanX while searching for sunken ships.
At a depth of around 92 meters between Sweden and Finland,
sonar scans detected a strange structure approximately 60 meters in diameter.
Due to its shape, it became unofficially known as the Baltic Sea UFO.
Sonar images revealed unusual details, including an uneven surface and formations
interpreted by some as passages or stair-like structures.
This sparked public interest and widespread discussion.
During attempts to approach the object,
divers reportedly experienced equipment malfunctions.
Cameras shut down and instruments stopped functioning.
It was claimed that similar problems did not occur in other areas of the sea.
Later, analyses were performed on samples collected nearby.
Geologist Volker Bruchert concluded that
the materials could simply be ordinary rocks such as granite and sandstone.
However, the samples were taken near the object rather than directly from it.
Because of this, the conclusions faced criticism,
and no single explanation regarding the nature of the anomaly has been universally accepted.
The exact origin and structure of the object remain unresolved.
