Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway join Lady Brittany on \"Royal Court\" to discuss their collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The conversation balances lighthearted personal stories about parenting and movie snacks with professional reflections on Nolan's disciplined directing style, the pursuit of authenticity in acting, and the grandeur of cinematic storytelling.
What sound or smell or sight would lure both of you in like a siren song?
You know, a crying baby is usually something you run towards.
Okay.
I feel so bad about my answer.
Why, what is it?
Pizza.
Welcome to Royal Court, the show where pop culture royalty compete for a spot on my trusted council.
I'm your host and Queen Lady Brittany of House Broski,
and today I'm joined by the Princess of Genovia and retired CIA operative Jason Bourne.
All the way from Ithaca, please welcome Lord Matt Damon and Lady Anne Hathaway.
My lady.
Thank you, my lady.
Oh, and my lord.
Thank you, yes.
Fresh off the battlefield, I see.
I am, I am.
Never takes it off.
Never.
Bays with it on.
Ah, it's heavy.
It's heavy, yes.
You regretting this choice?
A bit, a bit.
Well, I wanted to thank you guys for this beautiful wooden horse.
It's so lovely, thank you.
Well, there's nothing inside it, so don't worry.
Nothing at all.
That's a real one.
Okay, Matt, I have something to tell you.
We, uh, there's a little bit of lore on my show regarding you.
I had Josh Gad on the show.
You familiar with the gentleman?
Of course, yes.
I told him, are you aware that you and Matt Damon have the same face?
And he said, no, and I need to get my eyes checked.
So.
I wasn't either, but I'll, but I'll take another look at Josh's face next time.
I had never thought of it that way.
Might be like looking in a mirror this morning.
And I wanted to congratulate you, Erin, on the Knicks winning the championship.
Thank you so much.
You are so welcome.
And one of the most exciting things that happened this year.
That was a crazy series.
No, truly.
All right, are you guys comfortable?
Are you feeling good?
You ready for what I'm about to do to you?
I mean, I feel like I'm at home right now.
Comfort's relative.
Which was the tagline of the film.
All right, without further ado, let the trials begin.
You feeling good?
So good.
Feeling shiny?
Fantastic.
I don't know.
I have no idea what I look like.
I just put this on and walked right out.
This light in the eyes and the cape.
It's good.
Okay, good.
It's working.
It's giving.
The odyssey is, and I'm coining this term, a blockbuster.
What's y'all's go-to movie theater snack order?
Well, last night I had popcorn and raisinets.
That's my order.
Is that right?
Yes.
What?
You do extra butter, extra salt?
I didn't last night because I was worried about the raisinet extra butter hand situation.
That's fair.
Fair.
Yeah.
So I just went dry.
What about you?
So, it's a confession.
I'm allergic to popcorn.
Whoa.
I know.
It's really sad.
Oh, that's tragic.
When I can, when it's on offer, I get pretzel bites with mustard.
Delicious.
Delish.
And otherwise, I do peanut M&M's and either a Coke or a Dr. Peck.
All right.
The note takers over there writing that down.
Honorable mention for Milk Duds as well.
Milk Duds?
Yeah.
That's quite the dad candy.
But I was eating it long before I was a dad.
Okay, that counts.
Yeah.
The caramel staying in your teeth for hours afterwards.
It's just, yeah.
It's the experience.
Matt, you famously are a girl dad.
What are the girls putting you on to?
What's going on in the Damon household?
Well, last night we went to the movies.
We went and saw Obsession.
Love.
Yeah, which was a fantastic family experience.
We went to dinner and then Obsession.
And you know, my wife and I aren't huge on the horror genre,
but we'd heard so much about it and the actors were so great.
And the whole thing, we had a great time and the kids had a ball.
So that's top of mind because it just happened 12 hours ago.
Hey, I'll take it.
What about you?
You're a boy mom.
I am.
What are the boys watching on YouTube these days?
Oh, on YouTube, we were very into micro-cooking for a while.
That was, I mean, then I got more into it than them.
Is that like microwave cooking?
No, it's cooking, miniature cooking.
So they make these tiny kitchens and like the tiniest possible,
like a dollhouse size version of everything.
But it's real.
But then they make incredible meals.
Like they'll make Doritos from scratch.
Oh, really?
Like doll-sized Doritos?
I'm sober right now.
This is mom life.
What sound or smell or sight would lure both of you in like a siren song?
What's a beacon in the night for the both of you?
Like the siren song being something we couldn't resist?
I mean, it sounds good, but like, you know,
a crying baby is usually something you run towards.
Okay.
Whether it's yours or not, you know,
you want to make sure the kid isn't in distress.
You're on the way.
I feel so bad about my answer.
Why, what is it?
Pizza.
I was going to say the Krispy Kreme hot donut sign.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Auntie Annie's pretzels.
This is a very pretzel like forward interview.
But because when I was in high school, that was when I started auditioning
and I would take the train in after school
and then like go on a million auditions and not eat anything.
And then as I would arrive in Penn Station to take the train home,
I would smell Auntie Annie's and I would get myself a pretzel and a lemonade
and have it on the train home.
Wherever I am, we were in a mall a few weeks ago
and like Adam and I turned to each other and were like,
you smell Annie's, it's Auntie Annie's, we have to get one.
No, it's something very patriotic as well about Auntie Ann's.
You smell it and it's like, God.
Is it Auntie Ann's?
But we're friends, so I can call her Annie.
You know her.
We've known each other for a long time.
Odysseus' party trick is shooting an arrow through 12 axes.
Do you guys have any party tricks?
It's not a trick so much, but I learned a few rap songs like in high school
and so when they come on, I say them
and that's not something people expect me to be able to do.
It's like burned in your memory?
Yeah, like real, real, real deep.
That's great.
Can we ask what the song is?
It has to happen organically, Matt.
We didn't listen to a whole lot of rap on this movie, not enough.
It's also an extra fee.
That's an extra fee.
Matt, in a 1997 interview, you're always born by the way.
Wow, wow, wow, wow.
You said that you and Ben were the worst people in the world at doing pitches
and you can make a really great movie sound terrible.
Can you give a terrible pitch for The Odyssey?
Yeah, I don't want to outsmart myself.
Maybe I should just try to pitch it and it'll be bad.
Let's hear it.
Yeah, it's about a guy who goes to war
and then kind of figures out a way to win
and then just takes a really long time to get home.
And with that?
And also his wife's waiting for him.
I had to pitch the B side of the story as well.
Also his wife's waiting and she's super patient.
And she weaves.
They've got a kid.
And they got, oh yeah, they have a kid.
And with that, you've passed.
So here's what's about to go down.
In front of you is a shield, a family crest, if you will.
I'm going to have you draw your response to each Post-it note
and at the same time, I'm going to ask you
some more project-focused, serious questions.
If at any time you need me to repeat a question,
please let me know because it is what we've learned.
Incredibly difficult to multitask.
I just want to be honest.
This would be incredibly difficult for me
if I had full concentration.
It's kind of the joy of it.
Oh, okay.
Oh, we'll make it that.
I'm so there for that.
Make it childlike.
It's almost, you know, it's like therapy.
There's no other choice.
Matt.
Yes.
You've raved so much about making this film
that you've joked about sounding like a born-again Christian.
This question is for the both of you.
What are some of the commandments of a Nolan set?
Are there any rules everyone abides by?
Thou shalt work hard.
Wow.
Thou shalt not wear Uggs.
Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
He hates Uggs.
I think they just symbolize leisure
in a way that he's not comfortable with.
That's not right.
Thou shall not sit down.
Okay.
There are no chairs on set.
Copy that.
Thou wilt be fed.
However, lunch shall not linger.
Thou shalt not watch playback because there shall be none.
Thou shalt feel tremendous gratitude.
That's not a commandment.
It's just something that happens.
It's a byproduct.
To that, that thy are there.
Thou are there.
I appreciate abiding by the structure of the question.
I really do appreciate that.
Okay, Christopher Nolan said,
an audience's gasp is addictive as a filmmaker.
I want to know what kind of audience response
or director response is addictive as an actor.
Is there anything you hear and you're like,
God, that's what it's all about?
Chris has a tendency to be a little circumspect.
So when you do a really good job,
he tends to go, yeah, good.
Yeah, all right.
And that's kind of it.
And it was pretty funny when we were making it
because Zendaya came and did something
and Chris, the camera cut,
and there was this long pause and Chris said, perfect.
And I've done three movies with him and never heard back.
So that was an experience.
Hey, you'll get there one day.
Keep working.
I'm trying.
I'm not going to say what I'm about to say.
Because I've also made three films with him
and I have gotten one part.
You have?
I got one once.
God damn it.
No, I'm sorry.
It felt really good.
I bet it did.
It was amazing.
I cried and wrote it in my journal.
That's so sweet.
You've got to remember it.
Yeah, I actually did go home
and write in my journal every day on this one,
just because the experience of it,
it was so much happening
and I didn't want it to turn into a blur.
What was the thing that you said about you bring your egg,
something like you prepare for perfection,
but then let it go?
Prepare within an inch of your life.
That's it.
So you prepare within an inch of your life,
but then you just go, okay, this is Chris's show
and he's the one who really sees the entire landscape.
So it becomes just such a pleasure to let go.
He's an easy guy to trust.
He really knows what he's doing.
I can imagine that's also kind of liberating
as a player in this grand stage
of you can truly trust everyone to do their job.
This really wonderful thing happened on Dark Knight Rises
and there was a crew member
and she was saying that she was just feeling kind of insecure
about her work
and I just happened to overhear,
I was there for this conversation.
She was like, I just don't know
if I'm doing a good job on this.
And somebody said, listen,
you're on a Christopher Nolan movie.
That means you're one of the top three
in the world at what you do.
So whatever you're saying to yourself,
just put it within that context.
And I just remember,
it was my first time working there
and I just remember going, oh my gosh,
that's true, isn't it?
And I already cared,
but I was like, do not mess this up.
Christopher Nolan has said he thinks of his job
as essentially one long attempt
to find some moment of magic in a real place.
Where do both of y'all find magic?
Either in your day-to-day lives
or is it on a set where there's a moment
where you're like, this is what it's all about?
I think it's both.
I think they kind of inform each other.
Totally.
I definitely felt like there were
some incredibly magical moments on this movie
and then coming home when it was over
and being home felt pretty magical too.
Great answer.
I have that feeling of magic
in working with you on this.
Truly one of the...
And that's all I'm gonna say about it.
Dear journal.
Matt isn't it.
Matt is so inappropriate.
But then in life,
I just love going to nature,
going into nature.
One of my favorite things to do,
it's so weird,
I just love laying down at the base of a tree
and just getting really quiet, looking up
and turning your side and looking at the grass.
There's something Jon Barenthal, our co-star on this,
said about how there's something about this project
that's grand and granular at the same time.
Totally.
I like the things that fill you with awe,
showing up in Sicily and seeing this castle
and realizing the whole crew was gonna hike up a mountain
to get to the top of it.
It was so epic.
And then just appreciating that,
yeah, you just go lie down in nature
and that's epic in its own way too,
even though it's very quiet.
You're kind of woo-woo.
Oh yeah, baby.
We need to talk.
The medieval setting is bringing it up with me.
It's working, it's working.
It's working.
I am more woo-woo than I let on.
No, I'm literally the same.
Okay.
And I feel like...
Here we are.
And we need to get a glass of wine.
Maybe not now, but after.
This film.
So highly anticipated.
So epic.
Such an honor to be a part of.
We've talked about all this.
I want to push that aside for a second.
When both of you were kids,
is this the type of movie you wanted to make?
Or is this so far beyond anything you ever set your sights on?
This is 100% the kind of movie I wanted to make.
Fantastic.
I always knew that I wanted to be an actor.
To me, my first exposure to acting was through the theater.
So that was kind of all I thought that would be available to me.
And then I saw Shaker Kapoor's Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett.
And I remember something shifting in me.
And me going, I'm not sure I've ever seen acting as transparent
and just unforced and deep and astonishing and true as that.
And the movie felt so epic to me.
And that was when I was just like,
I don't even know if I can do that.
But I want to spend my life trying to do that.
So yeah, on that level, yeah, this is 100% where I hoped.
I hope that I'd have to experience like this.
I love that question because it's like,
you know, at the end of the day, what do we do this for?
What is entertainment?
What's the point?
And what's the takeaway?
And it's like, I think that there's an honesty of honoring
that inner child that's in everyone to be like,
am I living a satisfying life?
All right, Matt, when you're ready into this camera,
could you present us your family crest?
My family crest.
I am from Ithaca and I battled the Cyclops.
Wait, was it where we're from in the movie?
It's whatever you want.
Did you put pizza?
I did.
Bridge.
So I didn't draw the Brooklyn Bridge.
I just went with pizza and then the Knicks just won.
And I'm from New York, so I wanted to include the colors.
And the Cyclops is the only monster
I was ever going to be able to maybe draw a little bit.
Well, it's only like two circles.
Wait, were we supposed to be from Ithaca?
Well, it's a crest.
I mean, I assumed.
I thought it was like my crest.
It was pretty vague.
Vague directions.
It might be on me, to be honest.
Points for creativity, the both of you.
Could you sign them both for me?
Sure, yeah.
Well, it is my utmost pleasure and privilege
to induct you both into my royal court.
Yes.
We'll proceed with the knighting.
Stay where you are.
OK.
This is incredibly short.
It's bent on me.
I knight the Lord Matt, Bostonian ambassador to the realm.
Lady Anne, Genovian ambassador to the realm.
A parting gift for you.
No way.
Amazing.
Oh my gosh, that's so cool.
Oh my gosh, thank you.
This is great.
You are so freaking welcome.
You have no idea.
Will you sign mine?
Oh my god.
With the Crayola?
Yes.
Actually, yeah.
How about we have a Sharpie?
Yeah, I'll go with the Sharpie.
Thank you so much.
This was so much fun.
Is there anything you'd both like to promote to my realm
and to that camera?
Matt's in the Odyssey.
Go see it, and you might see Anne as well.
Fantastic.
Fantastic, well done.
Guards, take them away.
Thank you, darling.
