Hope has returned to Nepal’s devastating flood rescue operation after two workers were pulled alive from a hydropower tunnel nine days after the disaster.

The two men, identified as Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, were rescued from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Nepal’s Rasuwa district. Rescue teams found them deep inside the tunnel after days of searching through mud, debris and heavily damaged infrastructure.

The dramatic rescue has raised hopes that more people could still be alive inside Nepal’s flood-hit hydropower tunnels. One of the rescued workers reportedly told rescuers that other people may still be trapped inside, prompting teams to continue the search operation.

The disaster struck on August 26 after a glacier collapse triggered a devastating surge of water, rock and mud through the Himalayan valleys. More than 1,200 people have been reported dead in Nepal, while thousands remain missing.
