This exhibition has been in development now for over five years. It includes 10 immersive
experiences, the most ever shown of a practice anywhere in the world today. This is such an
engaging, uplifting, exciting, dynamic experience for people. Osama's philosophy has always been
we're one small part of a huge infinite cosmos and that's the effect that she tries to share
with us through her immersive experiences and infinity rooms. One of the incredible features
of this exhibition is the world premiere of her latest infinity room, an incredibly joyous,
uplifting and I have to say truly spectacular environment. That is a real honour for an
Australian gallery. It's an incredible insight in how an artist like Osama has this urge, this
drive to create and you can see it's not diminished as she's entered her 10th decade.
She is producing art continuously. Her life force is art creation.
She was born in a very conservative family. You can see how she fights,
how she battles the conservative world to create the new era. She always keeps on moving
to challenge the other media. I think in Osama's artwork we can see aspects of obsession
and fragility, both things that we can all relate to in our own daily lives.
I think one of the reasons that Osama is one of the most significant artists working today
is because we see in this exhibition that even as a young child she had motifs, beliefs, strengths
of what the world really represented to her, carried right through as she matured as a woman,
shifting from rural Japan to New York, back to Tokyo, still maintaining this sort of ethos that
she's carried through. She's diversified her materials, the spatial requirements she had,
the technical requirements that she needed, but the essence of who she was as a young person
still carried all the way across that time span. It's very unusual and shows
incredible honesty and integrity. I think the audiences will be inspired by the
infinite possibilities and experiences that are in all of our lives.
