First Responder Friday! Oh, I feel so sad it's the last one of the season, but we're celebrating
with a wonderful group of women and men who have come out here in Prince George's County
to celebrate with us, and I want to introduce my esteemed panel here. I've got a lot of
big shots here, and we're starting with the fire department. Sir, your name?
B.J. Harris. I'm the chief deputy for the fire and emergency department.
All right, wonderful. We're going to come back to fire department. We've got police?
Assistant Chief George Nichols. And?
Chief George Nader, Prince George's County Police Department.
We've got to talk, because apparently I can go in a helicopter, on boats.
Anytime, anything for you. Well, we won't do that on air, but we'll do it behind the scenes.
Sir, you're with the Sheriff's Office?
Yes, Stanford Mobile Chief Assistant Sheriff, Prince George's County Sheriff's Office.
All right, I don't want to get between anybody, but there's a lot of pressure here. Oh, by the way,
thank you to Duncan, who sponsors this segment, and if we get all the questions right,
we all get Duncan cards at the end, okay? Electronic, but yeah, but there's pressure.
You didn't say there was a quiz.
Well, right. We're going to make this up as we go along.
All right, let's start with the police department. Successful summer. We've got a big
Labor Day weekend. How are things looking from your viewpoint?
We're doing great. Successful summer, finishing off here with Fox 5 at the National Harbor.
The last zip trip, what could be better? So we're really, we're hiring still. So anybody
interested in a position, we have recruiters right down here at the harbor right now. Come down,
we can get you started. Also, we really encourage the community. We're coming up on a holiday
weekend, so we need people to drive safe. Remember, buckle up, no distracted driving,
no impaired driving, and just be courteous of the other cars around you, because we don't
want anybody to get hurt. Yeah, I've noticed a lot of scooters,
electric scooters, and the rest of it. Is that an issue in Prince George County?
So it's not an issue for us, but we do need people to be safe, especially our pedestrians.
You have to cross in crosswalks. Make sure it's well lit. Try to wear reflective clothing when
you can. So be cautious as you cross these streets. All right. Sheriff's department,
welcome. I feel like I didn't talk to you last year, but it's great to have you representing
here. How are things looking from your perspective? So this is a big holiday weekend for us, and we
want to always make sure that we focus in on our seniors in our community and our most vulnerable.
So again, we're asking everybody to still look out for these scams that are coming through
the telephone, through the email, and stuff being mailed out. So call and verify. If it
doesn't sound right, check with somebody else. So also, our community engagement. We're out in
the community every day of the week, making sure that we engage and let people know who we are and
what we do. Your first encounter with law enforcement should not be on a bad sense.
It should be something positive, and that's what we focus on. Wonderful. And I want to correct
myself. Sheriff's office, right? Correct. Any special shout outs to anybody in your office?
Shout out to our first sheriff, John D. B. Carr, who could not be here this morning,
and then to our rank and file and command staff. And then we have our newest member to the agency,
Nola, our mental health special dog. She's chilling right now, but she'll be okay. Well,
I mean, she's getting paid to work right now. Yes, she is. Yes, she is. It's a little hot out
here. I kind of get it. It is. All right, over to the fire department we go. We've been having
a wonderful summer, but of course, we've got a holiday in front of us. So how are things
in your world? Sure. So we have done a great job with recruiting and public safety. We have a fall
class getting ready to start next month. We'll be recruiting in November for our spring class,
joinpgfd.com for anybody that's interested with that. For this weekend though, we want to just
remind folks about we're going to have a good time, whether you choose to grill or you're out
on the water, we want you to be safe. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, 30
feet if you're in an apartment building. Have a backup plan if it doesn't work out, a hose or an
extinguisher. And if that doesn't work out, you call us, we'll figure it out for you. And then
water safety, never swim alone and always supervise your kids. We just want to remind you.
Just a quick question. I noticed in the fire department, a lot of the women and men are
particularly attractive. Is that one of the requirements?
We take everyone. We take everyone.
Just want to make sure. Not that the police department is not offering us something.
All right. Hey, listen, we were going to clean your glasses for you.
Also, apparently you have to be six feet or taller. That's why you need to step up for me
because I feel much better. Please introduce yourself.
Shawna Waddy, Deputy Chief Bureau of Administration, and we are hiring pgpolice.org.
Okay, wonderful. Well, I want to thank all of you for coming out. Special effort. The boat behind
me is beautiful. And you guys and women, of course, do an amazing job day in and day out
here in Prince George's County. So thank you. Let's have a great Liberty weekend. And of course,
great fall season here. Thank you, Fox 5 and Duncan for sponsoring this and coming to Prince
George's County. We appreciate it. Sir, how about a latte for you?
If you're recommending it, I'm sure it's good. All right, that's the latest from here. I'll
toss it over to Annie Mae. She's got more for you.
