Chinese Traditional Story: Fan Zhong Who was known for his Charity and Generous

Hello everyone, the story I'm going to share today is Fan Zhong who was known for his charity and generous. Fan Zhong was the maternal grandfather of Emperor Guangwu of Han. His ancestor Zhong Shanfu lived during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty and was in fact in the territory of Fan around 827 BC. Consequently, the family adopted Fan as their surname and became a prominent, respected clan in their local community. Upholding his family's legacy, Fan Zhong excelled in managing both agricultural and commercial affairs. He was known for his gentle and kind nature, always treating others with tolerance and respect, and was constantly mindful of priority in his speech and conduct. Three generations of his family lived together. The younger members paid their respect to the olders morning and evening, and they lived in great harmony. Fan Zhong was highly skilled in managing his estate and knew how to make the best use of his servants and hired hands. Consequently, everyone in the household worked with dedication and their profits doubled year after year. Eventually, the family's land holdings grew to 30,000 acres and their residence featured towering multi-story pavilions, all surrounded by the network of irrigation canals. On one occasion, wishing to produce household employments, Fan Zhong planted catapult and lacquer trees. Although many people mocked him at the time, the sister got there a few years later when the trees had matured and yielded an abundant supply of timber. Despite processing vast wealth, Fan Zhong was never stingy. He constantly provided relief and support to empowered the clansmen and extended his generosity to his neighbors in the community. Even though who had once mocked him came seeking help, Fan Zhong, bearing no grudges, extended charity to them at all times. On one occasion, upon hearing that his grandsons, the He brothers, were crowding over the division property, he felt deeply ashamed and gave them 200 acres of land, thereby settling the dispute. Fan Zhong's virtuous conduct soon won him praise throughout the county. Leading to his nomination as San Lao the Elder, an official role dedicated to promoting moral education within the community and assisting local officials in administrative matters and the resolution of disputes. Fan Zhong passed away at the age of over 80. During his lifetime, he had lent money to as many as million people. On his deathbed, he instructed his family to destroy all the loan agreements. Upon learning of this, the debtors felt deeply ashamed and wanted to go to the Fan household to repay what they owned. But Fan's sons, honoring their father's final wishes, steadfastly refused to accept the payments. In the 18th year of Jiangwu era of the Eastern Han dynasty, Emperor Guangwu traveled south to offer sacrifices at Jiangling. While passing through Houyang County, he paid his respects at the tomb of Fan Zhong, posthumously confirming upon his title, Marquis Jin of Shouzhang and erecting the shrine in his honor. Whenever the emperor's imperial procession journeyed south, he would visit Fan Zhong's tomb to pay homage and hold a ceremony to bestow rewards. Thank you very much for listening to the story.
