AI GeneratedA dirt bike racer turned filmmaker shares his journey from Perth to Sydney and beyond. He details his evolution from a journalist and test rider to the founder of Motology Films, creating global content and feature films. Now leaving the city behind, he reflects on his love for the Australian outback, the nomadic lifestyle, and his deep pride in his national identity.
I don't think I'm your typical Aussie, but my story is 100% Australian.
Ten years ago I rolled up to Sydney with an old Holden Statesman.
I was just a dirt bike racer from Perth, looking to have a go on the East Coast.
I fumbled my way into journalism and began working as a test rider for magazines,
which funded my racing pursuits both nationally and internationally.
In time I appeared on the covers of the very magazines I used to read as a kid.
That was cool, but it ultimately developed my passion for photography.
I wanted to work on both sides of the lens, so I used my skills on a dirt bike
to bring cameras into the heart of competition, capturing the real essence of the sport I love.
Then the world of HD video arrived, and I could now turn pictures into film.
From there it was inevitable I'd start making my own films, riding alongside my mates,
some of whom are among the best riders in the world.
I've since started a YouTube channel, Hayrieman1,
through which people are watching my films worldwide every day.
From extreme enduro to epic adventures, it's become the platform of my small company, Motology Films.
Riding around the world, Motology Films has since released two feature-length productions,
Himalayan Hero and Moto Nomad,
movies I've made with nothing more than camera gear packed on dirt bikes.
So now what? I feel a new chapter has begun, and it's time to keep moving.
Time to take what I've learned and begin a fresh approach to filming.
Sydney's been good to me, it's chewed me up and spat me out a stronger, wiser and more capable person.
It really is a place of opportunity if you've got the guts to chase your dreams.
I have some great memories of this city, but it feels good to let the big smoke fade into the rear-view mirror.
In 40 years of life I've driven countless kilometres around Australia.
There's nothing like the passing terrain to soothe your soul and calm your mind,
even if you're viewing it from a screaming dirt bike.
I've also taken my partner in crime away from Sydney.
She's never experienced the real Australia,
so what better than a classic road trip to introduce her to our spectacular country.
I love outback Australia.
There's something special about a dirt road winding through the remoteness with not a soul in sight.
But just when you think you're all alone,
you'll stumble upon an oasis, a watering hole for weary nomads.
I've long been a nomad. It's a way of life only few understand.
So when we cross each other's path, it's good to share our stories.
Australians are quick to jump on a plane and take holidays in other countries.
Yet there's so many places here that will blow your mind.
And all we have to do is get in our car and drive there.
I'm not big on cars, never have been.
They're ultimately just a tool to transport my bike around.
But at the end of the day, there's not many cars that symbolise the essence of Australia like the Commodore wagon.
And as long as I'm holding an Australian passport, I'll drive a bloody Holden, mate.
We do adore our sunburnt country, lined with the best beaches on earth.
And while I love being in the ocean, I'm ---- scared of sharks.
So I play it safe and only ever go surfing in the sand.
I'm proud to say I'm 100% Australian made.
This beautiful country has been my sanctuary for writing and filmmaking.
The ultimate environment to combine art with motorsports.
And no matter where in the world Motology Films may take me, there's only one place that will ever be my home.
