The Two Orcas That EMPTIED an Entire Coastline tells the extraordinary story of Port and Starboard, two male killer whales whose highly specialized hunting technique helped transform one of South Africa’s most famous great white shark strongholds.
In The Two Orcas That EMPTIED an Entire Coastline, we uncover how these orcas learned to flip great whites into tonic immobility, tear open the pectoral girdle, and extract the energy-rich liver with remarkable precision—sometimes in less than two minutes. As the attacks increased, great white sightings around Gansbaai and False Bay collapsed, while other shark species moved into the ecological space left behind and became targets themselves.
What began as an unusual feeding strategy evolved into something much larger.
Ultimately, The Two Orcas That EMPTIED an Entire Coastline reveals how the intelligence and adaptability of just two predators can send fear through an entire ecosystem—and remind us that even an apex predator’s throne is never permanent.

OctoLab examines the precise, strategic hunting behaviors of two specific killer whales observed off South Africa's coast. By targeting a unique physiological vulnerability in great white sharks, these orcas have triggered significant ecological shifts, altering the dynamics of local marine populations and forcing scientists to re-evaluate established predator-prey hierarchies within the ocean.
