She provides specific recommendations based on skin tone and age, covering everything from affordable drugstore finds to luxury splurges, focusing on hydration, staying power, and color accuracy.
I have tried hundreds, probably thousands of lipsticks
over my career as a makeup artist.
This search for the perfect lipstick
has been an obsession of mine for years.
And one of the questions that I get asked most often
in the comments section here is,
what lipstick are you wearing?
So I thought it was finally time
to put all of my favorites in one place.
I went through my entire lipstick collection
and curated the shades and formulas
that I not only use on my clients,
but that I personally reach for
and that you see me wearing again and again in my videos.
Let's start with the Makeup By Mario Super Satin Lipstick.
This is a classic creamy satin formula
with a nice soft sheen.
I think this is pretty close to being
the perfect lipstick formula for more mature lips.
It's hydrating and creamy enough
that it doesn't make the lips look dry
or emphasize all of those little lines,
but it's not so slippery
that it starts migrating outside the lip lines
or disappears five minutes after you put it on.
This one is in the shade Bronx Baby,
and it happens to be Mario's favorite shade in the collection
and it's also my personal favorite.
It's just one of those colors
that I reach for over and over again.
In fact, I actually used it in this video
and I got a lot of questions about it over there as well.
Now, if you have lighter skin
and you find that Bronx Baby is a little too saturated
or even just too warm for you,
check out the shade South Shore instead.
South Shore is a much cooler pink nude.
You can see that it doesn't really suit
my coloring quite as well,
but I've used this shade on so many of my lighter skin,
kind of cooler toned clients,
and it's honestly perfect.
This is my client Hazel wearing South Shore.
You can see in this video
how absolutely gorgeous it looks on her.
It actually looks a lot better on her than Bronx Baby.
So if you're a little deeper skin, go for Bronx Baby.
If you're a little bit lighter, go for South Shore.
Now, if you love that soft pink look
but want something a little more neutral,
this MAC lipstick in the shade Modesty
is such a beautiful option too.
This is also a creamy satin lipstick
with really good staying power.
It will last you all day long.
It stays on so, so well.
The shade Modesty is that quintessential soft pink.
It's almost like that pink you would imagine on a Barbie doll.
On my skin tone, if I'm being honest,
it can look a little too light on its own,
but that's actually a really easy fix.
If you ever put on a lipstick
and you feel like the color just isn't saturated enough
for your complexion,
try pairing it with a bit of a deeper lip liner.
That extra depth around the perimeter of the lips
adds back some definition
and it really helps to balance out lighter lipstick
against a darker skin tone.
If you have a lighter complexion than me, however,
this is one of those soft, pretty pinks
that you'll probably be able to wear beautifully
straight out of the tube.
Now let's move into a really affordable option
because you absolutely do not need to spend a ton of money
to get a beautiful lipstick.
And we all know that no one does it better
at the drugstore than L'Oreal.
This lipstick here is from the ColorRiche line.
It's in the shade Worth It.
One thing that I really like about L'Oreal
is that some of their most popular shades
actually span across different lipstick formulas.
So once you find a color that you love,
you can often find a version of it in the finish
or texture that works best for you.
Worth It is one of those iconic L'Oreal shades.
It's a beautiful, wearable, rosy pink
that gives the lips enough color
to bring some life into the face
without ever feeling like you're wearing
a really bold lipstick.
The ColorRiche formula is also really creamy
and comfortable with that very classic lipstick feel.
It gives you that little bit of sheen
that keeps the lips looking soft and healthy
rather than dry or flat.
Before I move into the nudes,
I wanna show you one transition shade
because I feel like this one fits perfectly
between our neutral pinks and our nudes.
This is Anastasia Beverly Hills in the shade Peach Amber.
And if you've ever left me a comment
asking me what lipstick I'm wearing,
there is a very good chance that it was this one.
I wear it all the time, including in this video.
I actually got so many questions
about this lipstick in that video
that it's what inspired me to make this video for you next.
Peach Amber is a deeper, warm peach.
But what I love about it
is that it never pulls over the orange.
It still has that beautiful nude quality to it.
And I can even see a hint of pink running through it,
which I think is what makes the color
just so incredibly wearable.
It's warm enough to bring life back into the face,
but it's still neutral enough
that it goes with almost any makeup look.
And on my coloring,
this is just one of those shades that works.
So if you have a medium skin tone like me,
I highly suggest checking this one out.
Now let's move into our nude shades.
These are still very neutral, very wearable,
but instead of pulling pink,
we're moving more into those beautiful brown undertones.
The first one I wanna show you
is Jones Road in the shade Nudist.
Now, I'm not gonna lie.
I am not the biggest Jones Road fan.
There are some products from the brand
that I absolutely love,
but then there are others
that I think are actually terrible.
But their classic lipsticks are fantastic.
Nudist is a cool-toned nude
with those beautiful brown undertones.
So if you love a true nude,
but you don't want anything that pulls pink or peach,
this is a great choice.
The next one is definitely more of a luxury splurge,
but I can't gatekeep it because it really is just that good.
I use it all the time in my videos.
And I never wanna tell you what it is
because you guys get mad at me
when big things are too expensive.
I'm gonna tell you.
So this is the Gucci Satin Lipstick
in the shade Nina Light Pink,
which is very confusing
because there is absolutely nothing light pink
about this lipstick.
On me, this pulls much more brown.
It has a little bit of that peachy,
almost amber warmth that we saw
in the Anastasia Beverly Hills Peach Amber shade.
But I would absolutely put this in the nude category
rather than the pink categories.
But regardless of what Gucci wants to call it,
I love this lipstick.
It has very quickly become one of my most used shades.
The color is just incredibly flattering.
The satin finish makes the lips look smooth and healthy.
And it's one of those shades
that I can throw on with any makeup look
and it always, always works.
So is it expensive?
Yes.
Don't come after me in the comments.
I know it's expensive.
Do I wish I didn't love it quite this much?
Also, yes.
Now, if you're looking for something that really leans
into that coffee with milk territory
with none of the obvious pink or peach undertones,
have a look at the Merit Signature Lip
in the shade Split.
This formula feels a little different
from the other lipsticks I've shown you.
It's still a satin finish,
but it's not quite as opaque.
It has a little bit of that comfortable,
almost lip balm, sheer quality to it.
But it feels much more refined and polished on the lips
than an actual lip balm.
The shade itself is described as a warm neutral
and I completely agree with that.
It's a true coffee tone nude
without becoming too deep or too brown.
I can see this working on so many different complexions,
especially because that slightly more sheer formula
allows some of your natural lip color
to come through underneath, which can be very flattering.
Another phenomenal shade in this category
is the Sicily Lepidal Rouge in Beige Tahini.
I actually purchased this one online
because I heard so many amazing things about it.
And I was shocked to discover
that Sicily doesn't show their lipstick shades
on different skin tones on their website,
which makes it so hard to figure out
what the color is actually gonna look like on you.
And considering how much this lipstick costs,
like Sicily, come on, give us some model shots.
It's the least you can do for this price.
But thankfully, this ended up being a win
because the lipstick itself is absolutely beautiful.
The texture is pretty much perfect.
The shade is gorgeous.
And even the bullet feels extremely luxurious.
It's a beautiful lipstick.
The bullet is gorgeous.
So yes, I know it's expensive like the Gucci one.
Yes, I would like significantly more information
before spending this much money on a lipstick online.
But I have to be honest,
they did make a really good lipstick.
And if you try it, I doubt you will not like it.
Okay, we've done our soft pinks and our nudes.
So now let's completely change gears and move into our reds.
The first shade I wanna show you is a true blue-based red,
which are surprisingly difficult to find.
So many reds tend to pull either orange or pink,
but this one stays in that really classic true red category.
This is the Jones Road classic lip color again,
but it's in the shade ruby.
And to me, this is the quintessential 1950s red.
It's bold, glamorous, and incredibly timeless,
which is exactly why I love it just so, so much.
And because we already talked about this formula,
you know what you're getting here.
It's beautiful.
It's richly pigmented.
It's satin finish.
It gives you all the impact
of like a classic red lip, classic formula,
without any of that really dry, flat look
that other red lipsticks can have.
Like Mac Ruby Woo, another classic red, but so dry.
It's just so dry and uncomfortable to wear.
You're not gonna feel that with this one.
So if you're looking for an iconic old Hollywood red,
this is such a great option.
It's one of my favorite lipsticks right now.
Now, if you're looking for a warmer red,
check out the RMS Legendary Lip in the shade Ruby Moon.
I know how much you all love Rosemary Swift,
and this actually happens to be her favorite lipstick.
When we were together filming videos last year,
she wore this shade every single day,
and it looked incredible on her.
This is also the red that she used on me
in our collaboration video,
and you guys went crazy for that finished look.
But beyond the color,
there's another reason I wanted to include this
in the lineup.
If you struggle with lipstick bleeding
into the little lines around your mouth,
this formula is so, so good for that.
It's not dry, and it doesn't have that flat, matte finish
that can sometimes make mature lips look smaller.
But for whatever reason, once it's on,
it really does stay where you put it.
So if you want a warm, vibrant red,
but feathering is something you worry about,
Ruby Moon, definitely wanna check out.
Now, if you love that classic blue red from Jones Road,
but you want something a little deeper
and richer and slightly more matte,
then check out the Hung Van Goh Creamy Matte Lipstick
in New York Red.
Don't let the word matte in the description scare you,
because this is not the traditional
like super dry matte formula
that sucks every ounce of moisture out of your lips.
It still has a beautiful creaminess to it,
so you get that sophisticated matte finish
without making the lips look totally dry
and like shriveled up.
And because it's more matte base,
the staying power is incredible.
I can put this lipstick on,
and six hours later, I'm telling you,
it still looks perfect.
The color itself is also just glamor.
It screams glamor.
It's a deeper blue base red
that has that really dramatic red carpet quality to it.
He named it well, you know?
Thank you guys so much for watching.
You can now stop this video
and screenshot this chart that I made you
that summarizes all of this information
into a shopping guide.
Now, if you want me to make another video just like this,
but using only drugstore lipsticks,
let me know in the comments,
and I'll do that for you next.
Now, I know some of you miss me saying this,
so in this video, you're safe.
