The speaker shares a \"secret\" strategy for setting up 3D printers in Cura: instead of using manufacturer-specific profiles, which can be unreliable, he uses the Creality Ender 3 Pro profile as a universal baseline for almost all Cartesian-style printers to achieve consistent, high-quality results with minimal tweaking.
Welcome folks, TechNiverse here. You know I set up an awful lot of printers and I
have a confession to make. I don't always make a new profile based on the printer
that I'm printing with. Now I have tried in the past to go in and let's, I'll just
demonstrate it to you. So if I go to settings, printer, add printer. I'm gonna
add a non-network printer. My first issue experienced with this was with TiVo. So
the first time I got my TiVo Tarantula Pro and I went to install the TiVo. The
Pro model wasn't here, it was just the regular Tarantula. So I tried using that
profile and it was absolute garbage on the printer. It wasn't for the Pro and I
just, it wasn't meshing well no matter what I tweaked. Even though the settings
seem to be very similar, I couldn't get a good quality print out of the printer
now. So what I did is the same thing that I've been doing every time I set up a
profile since. So no matter what printer I'm using and this goes for my big
Anet's as well. I have some really large size printers. The thing that I will do
and this is my dirty little secret because this is the best starting point
I found. Look at all these profiles in here. These are all the brands, right? And
then they each have a couple different printers and stuff like that. Well, I
don't even bother looking through this list. What I do is I go right up here to
Creality 3D and I grab the Ender 3 Pro profile. Okay, so that's the profile that
I'm starting with for all of my printers. Don't care what printer it is, I'm
starting with the Ender 3 Pro profile. And the reason is because I can take
that printer, I can say I'm doing, I have a really, let's do the artillery. Let's
say I'm doing an artillery genius. I can change the name so it's set to that
printer. That way from this basic profile setting I can make a couple of minor
tweaks. Now there is an artillery genius profile in here and I haven't tried it.
The reason for that is because I get amazing prints off this machine using
the Ender 3 Pro profile. As with every other machine that I've tried it on, it
comes out pretty much flawless every time. That allows me to know that since
my basic print settings are fine and I know they're gonna come out generally
okay with a little bit of tweaking per machine, that gives me a great starting
point for basically comparing that with all of the other machines compared
together. Because they're using all of the same settings off the bat for those
initial prints and then say there's something that needs to be tweaked a
little bit on one printer and not the other, I can do that under its name. But
they are still all starting with that Creality Ender 3 profile. That is what I
base my profile that you find on my Ender 3 v2 download page on. So I'm using
the artillery. It's a little bit bigger than 220 so here I can change the size
and I would do that if I was gonna be using, I'm gonna do it here just to be
sure, but if I were to be doing a large anet or something like that or a larger
printer I would put the proper volume in there. I think one of the reasons that
this tends to work so well is because the Ender 3 start and end g-code are
pretty much spot-on. You get that nice little primer line, you get everything
set up, you're ready to go and it tends to work really well. I haven't had any
issues doing this. So like I said I can just hit next and it'll set me up with
the artillery genius. Now all these settings are based off the Ender 3 Pro
but they are pretty basic for any of these stand-up Cartesian style printers.
So I am in a good place to go ahead and print a model and I can actually show
you here. Let me make my picture a little bit bigger so you can see what I'm
showing you. So this here is a Benchy model. That's a pretty decent view of it.
This was printed on the artillery genius here using an Ender 3 profile. This was
one of the first prints I got off of the artillery genius and it came out really
really well. So I don't mess around too much with any of those other brands as
far as it goes for picking which profile to start with and that is because like I
said it may be my dirty little secret but it has worked really really well. Now
once I have gotten to this point where I've changed a few settings after my
initial prints and got it dialed in for that machine in particular such as
adjusting the retraction which on this machine is extremely short because it is
a direct drive machine. A few little minor tweaks like that and you're good
to go but the Ender 3 pro profile is always a good starting point as far as
your basic settings. You get a very basic layer height and line width and wall
thickness everything like that seems to be spot-on. Oftentimes I will go through
and change this to three lines for the wall because I don't want that infill
showing through and in order to do that I have to increase this to 0.12 and then
it'll calculate all that stuff so but yeah that's basically it's a great
starting point for any profile no matter what printer you're setting up. Now I
will list I have used this on my Mingda printer, my Anet, several of them at
least five of them, my TiVo Tarantula Pro, my Artillery Genius, I've used it on the
Focus 3d printer that I tested a couple weeks ago and that came out phenomenal
that's an amazing printer by the way definitely check that out. I've used it
on I know there's a couple more I can't think of them the only printer I
actually haven't used this successfully on and didn't even make the attempt was
the FL Sun Q5 but that's a Delta so like I said this is this is for Cartesian
style Ender 3 style open design printers and obviously if you have a different
size nozzle you're gonna want to make that adjustment as well as the
retraction adjustment but other than those two minor things since the nozzle
size doesn't change too much it's generally a standard 0.04 for
everybody for everything unless you order and put in a different one
or excuse me 0.4 unless you order and put in a different one so yeah
definitely try it out you're gonna get some really good results if you've been
having trouble dialing in a profile for your specific printer back up start a
new one using the Ender 3 Pro profile and just adjust that size don't change
the start and end g-code at all you should be getting better results right
off the bat than you did with your already adjusted profile for the
previous printer so I know this is kind of crazy okay and and it's nuts to me to
look at this list in the add printer list and I mean honestly if you were to
open 90% of these printers other than the build volume the actual settings are
gonna be relatively close to the same the only major difference in a lot of
these is like I said the retraction sometimes the speed so it's kind of
silly that there's so many and not just one base profile or profiles honestly
should be based off of your hardware each individual item and I think that's
one of the reasons that the Ender 3 profile works so well is because it's
very very base model of everything even on the Pro version and and it's easily
upped to the next level if you know what I mean by tweaking a setting or two
say you have a you decide to put an all metal hot end on there and your
temperatures are a little bit higher and things like that so you can do pretty
much all the mods that people do to an Ender 3 to any of these other printers
and honestly 90% of them are exactly the same V slot extrusion simple mechanics
simple electronics they basically are giving you as much bang as they can for
the buck while still trying to make a profit so there's no reason why you
can't use the same profile I mean oftentimes you'll see me getting ready
to print something and I won't even go out of my Ender 3 profile I'll just make
the adjustments I need so really really good thing to know really great place to
start as you can see it doesn't necessarily have to show up as an Ender
3 in your printer list you can you can set it to the name of whatever brand it
is but this is definitely what I recommend when setting up your printer
with Kira for the first time you're gonna have a lot less headaches and
you're gonna appreciate it a lot more because I'm telling you this is this is
key this is one of those things that I can throw any printer on here and get a
decent print as long as it's a Cartesian machine so that is a hell of a lot
better than some of the struggles you see trying to print with the profiles
that they already have because they have some wonky settings and some of them or
maybe the person who set it up machine wasn't exactly like your machine in this
case we know their machine wasn't like our machine somehow we still get a good
print so I've begun to rant I have gone off topic a little bit I hope you guys
found this video interesting I want you to go ahead and try what I suggested
regardless of what kind of Cartesian machine you have plug in the original
Ender 3 Pro profile give it a print with the settings as they are and then make a
minor adjustments and tell me that it isn't just as good or better than your
dedicated printer profile that you have already that's gonna be it for this one
