The video captures a high-intensity \"100 speed\" workout focused on power, resistance training with socks, and race strategy to prepare the athletes for the championship season.
Practice and pancakes, what is up everyone?
I'm Coleman Hodges and I'm here in Charlottesville, Virginia
at Farm Bell Kitchen with the University of Virginia women.
We just went to a practice with the University of Virginia.
It is late December and they are in the thick of it.
They are doing, Todd told me this, 21 workouts in 14 days.
There's a lot of winter training going on.
Might be news to them.
I've got pancakes, look at these peaches and cream pancakes.
Farm Bell Kitchen shows out.
All right everyone, give me some input.
How was this Sunday morning workout for you?
Today we were with Jake.
Jake is MNI's primary coach.
We did racks and we mainly focused on just working
our power on our pull outs,
working specifically with our pull
and we did less kick today,
but it was more just power driven with the arms.
We ended with some 25s fast with socks.
So I'm excited to be working on these pull outs
and hopefully they get stronger for the end of the season.
I was in Todd's group today and normally I'm kind of all
over the place with which coach I train with.
So I was with Todd and we did 100 speed.
This morning I did breaststroke,
working on a lot of kick stroke count stuff
for hopefully a fast 100 breaststroke
towards the end of the championship season.
I was also with Todd this morning.
I'm only ever with Todd.
I did butterfly, but when we do 100 speed,
we always start with a little bit of an IM warmup.
So we did that, did a fast all out 100 IM.
The main set was basically 36, 25s with socks,
like majority either underwater kicking or swimming
and then ended the practice with a 75 all out,
which was kind of new and different.
It was good to be back doing some sprint fly.
Great, 13.1.
I just like 100 IMs.
I love it.
I think they hate it.
We do a ton, especially on stroke day.
So I just try to get everybody warmed up or whatever.
You know, we did 300 IMs earlier,
just kind of get them going.
And then I just like to,
I don't do like a max effort 100 IM all the time,
but I like to do it every once in a while,
just to, I like to see if they're getting better
at all the strokes, let them rip it.
And you know, and then it tires them out a little bit,
but it gets them ready for the speed set
that they're about to do.
Salty right now?
Are you salty?
If you want to get better,
I'm going to make you salty a lot.
That's my goal.
Salty Gretchen.
We want to turn Gretchen,
we want to turn the great Gretchen into Gretchen the Great.
It's a front end, 100 speed type workout.
A lot of resistance, 36, 25s,
three rounds of 12, 25s, all with socks.
Just working their 100 like strategy,
kick counts, breathing patterns, but maximum effort.
And then followed each round of 12, 25s up with one fast,
you know, swim without the resistance.
First round was just a 25, then a 50, then a 75.
And really just try to build strength, speed,
get them tired a little bit before the swim
without the, with the socks and see what they can do.
We kind of call it the no pace zone.
I don't like the word pace.
It's just race, just go.
Sometimes we'll do best average stuff,
but today it was more like just fly and die
and see if you can hang on.
Ready, go!
Jack, 14, four.
Greg's 13, one.
Max, 12, two.
11, one.
Boyle.
No.
Gretchen.
You scared of me or something, Gretchen?
She whipped, she whipped you again.
I didn't know what we were doing.
Ready, go!
Well, that's your own fault.
14, eight.
12, seven.
Kaylee, 12, four.
Spence, Claire.
Ready, go!
What happened to the music?
Jordy, turn the music on.
Did you kick out on that one?
Yeah.
You cheated.
I did 11 good.
11?
Greg's 13, one.
Max, Jack, 12, three.
11, oh.
Boyle.
Alex, 14, eight.
Ready, go!
Duff, Spence, 12, eight.
12, four, Claire.
Greg's 12, nine.
Ready, go!
Max, Jack, 12, fours.
10, eight, Boyle.
Good.
12, threes.
14, one.
Ready, go!
Hey, if you're gonna do that three strokes
without breathing there,
you're probably gonna need to throw in a two.
You need to breathe more is my point.
Like, go three strokes and then go two strokes.
And then go to fours.
Ready, go!
12, four.
Or maybe even like three, two, two, then fours.
All right, here we go!
You need to be in your kick counts,
your breathing patterns!
Flyers, try to hit your stroke counts!
Ready, go!
Max, 10, two.
Greg's nine, eight.
Kaylee, 10, two.
Nine, six, Claire.
Nine, six.
Good.
We'll go 30 back.
30 back.
Swim down the middle, first group.
Ready, go!
All right, on the bottom.
Second group!
Ready, go!
Max, two, seven.
Greg's two, four.
Nice.
There you go.
It's been a while since we've gone 22, Max.
Feelin' it!
Max feelin' herself!
Hey, now you gotta do that.
All right, here we go, on the top.
All right, here we go, third group.
Ready, go!
Duff, 23, seven.
Claire, 22, two.
Nice.
Hey!
Socks back on.
22, four.
Nice.
Yeah, I like it!
I mean, it could be we're adding a 25.
It could be we're doubling the distance.
That's what I thought.
We could be going back down.
It could be a pyramid.
All right, two 75s.
One easy, one max.
The goal here for Flying Breast,
we wanna see how close to your 50 time
you can be on the first 50.
So that 50 you went earlier,
I want you to swim this like it's a 50
and then be tough the last 25.
Freestylers, since you're going to a flip instead of a hand,
your goal is to see how close to like a half a second over.
So if you went 22-0,
you're trying to try a flip in 22-5
and then finish it, all right?
So you got two goals.
How fast can you go for a 75?
And how close to that 50 time can you get on the 50?
So we're gonna time your 50 and your 75.
You gotta go reckless.
You've got to be reckless.
Reckless abandon the first 50.
You can't be scared.
The first 50 is about being reckless.
The last 25 is about being relentless.
Be at peace with the pain.
Let's go!
Ready, go!
All right, on the top, next group.
Top.
Okay.
Max, 35-9.
Gretch, 34-9.
Max, you're out at 23-5.
Gretch, you're out at 22-4.
There you go, nice.
There you go.
All right, here we go!
That was right on, right?
You got two-four, that's good.
Good job.
Five!
Ready, go!
That's gotta be one of the fastest 75s
you've ever done, too.
That's good ----.
Nice job, guys.
What was that?
What was that 75?
What was it, 50?
Nice.
Kaylee, 37-9.
Claire, 35-2.
Kaylee, you're out in 24-7.
Claire, you're out in 22-9.
Nice.
Ready, go!
What'd you get?
34?
And a 35-0, 22-8 in the 50.
Nice.
Hey, that was great, guys.
Badass practice, that's good stuff.
