AI GeneratedA peaceful glimpse into a day of homesteading, featuring the process of canning homemade ketchup from garden-grown tomatoes, a review of autumn-scented tallow skincare products, the arrival of twin calves, and essential late-summer garden maintenance, specifically deadheading dahlias to encourage new growth.
We have to water them on the other side.
See mommy, that's the orange zucchini. Oh yeah.
You mean this one? Yeah. Yeah, that is looking nice.
Wow, yeah, that's so pretty. The thing is, I'm not sure if this is right. Oh yeah, that's right,
we'll have to wash it. Let me just pick it like this. Yeah, look how big this is.
This is a tiny good tomato. Good. We'll have to wash it though, it's dirty.
Today I wanted to give you more of an unedited version of a day in our lives. Less music,
more just organic nature sounds that we are hearing in the garden. The birds have been
so beautiful this year, just singing and singing in the gardens, and just taking you along. We
will get to a little more talking a little bit later in the video, but I thought it would be
fun just to let you be a little fly on the wall here as we start off with, and I hope you enjoy
following along as we do something that I grew up watching my mom do, which is canning a lot of
ketchup for the year ahead. Whether you have this playing as you're going about doing your
housework, or if you're just sitting down needing a peaceful moment, I hope that this provides you
some inspiration and just a moment of calm in your day. I'm so grateful you're here.
It looks like today we will be making ketchup. We picked a lot of tomatoes in our garden,
so to start off with we need to wash all of the tomatoes and then we'll chop them up and blend
them. Let's take a couple minutes to talk about something that gets used pretty much every single
night in our home in one or two ways. The first being soaps. So I have talked about Titus 2
towel before. I know so many of you already love them, but they came out with their new autumn
scents, and these are so good. In fact, they're kind of focused around two different themes, one
of them being autumn cravings, and I have here a gift set so you can actually get these really
cute little gift sets, or you can also get these in the full size. These are the body butters. If
you have not tried, it's like a whipped tallow butter, and let me just get one of these open for
you because they are so incredibly smooth. I just love how easily they rub into your skin. The body
butters are our favorites for foot rubs. Oh, that smells so good. This is apple picking. Smells
almost like Hobby Lobby, but we got a little bit off track. So along with the body butters, there's
also new soap scrubs, and they come in the same flavors where you have one that's like the cozy
season trio, which has marshmallow, fireside, cozy season, and autumn and idle wild, and then for
autumn cravings, we have apple picking, espresso and mocha, and then pumpkin spice donuts. We have
some autumn scented wax melt if you prefer that over candles. We have a new facial scrub. I've
actually been using their facial scrub a lot. I like to do it after I do an oil sometimes to just
get a nice deep cleanse. This is what that looks like, and I have been very happy with that. In
fact, sometimes if I am like out of one of these soaps, which we ended up not even really talking
about, these are all tallow based soaps and what we use every night in the bathtub, but sometimes
if we run out of these, I'll just use the face soap, and that does a beautiful job as well.
Something new to Titus 2 that I'm really excited about is their whipped tallow and coffee eye
cream. This is supposed to really help with like puffiness under the eyes, and it actually has
advanced peptides in it as well, and that helps like improve with firmness around the eyes and
stuff like that. We've been so happy, honestly, with all of these products. They work so well.
They have such good ingredients, and if you're looking to stock up on any of these autumn
inspired scents, now is the time. They are live on the website, and you can use my code THISGOLDENHOUR
that will give you a free one of these full-sized soaps. And these, by the way,
last a long time. So I hope that helps you out, but now we better get running back to our ketchup.
So now we need to count how many quarts we have. Can you help me count? One, two, almost three.
Let's put this back on. All right, can you push that in there?
All right, high five. Good job. Okay, now let's measure these.
Four, four, five, five, seven.
We're at five plus a little, so now we're ready to juice some more in there, okay?
You know what you can do? Why don't we scoot you this side for now, and then you can put all this
in here for the chickens. Can you do that? We'll set this down while mommy cuts up some more tomatoes.
Well, that is a lot, but let's put the rest in there too.
Six, seven, eight.
Well, that is a lot of tomatoes. According to our math, this is all the tomato juice we can fit in
our big pot with all the other ingredients that we add for ketchup. So we have 41 quarts right now,
maybe a little bit more with what I have in the juicer. And obviously, we still have a good bit
of tomatoes left, so we'll have to take care of those. Maybe we'll turn those into salsa a different
day. For now, I think I'll just refrigerate them. Or if we start filling the pot and see that we
actually can fit more, we'll add more, but I'm pretty sure this is going to max our pot. So we're
going to add all the ingredients, and then that needs to cook down for two hours. So you're going to start
off with more than you'll finish with, but it makes such a delicious, flavorful, thick ketchup. I know
so many people, myself included, did not really enjoy homemade ketchup until this recipe, so
if you have excess tomatoes, you might want to give it a try.
Our ketchup has simmered for a couple hours now, and so it is looking delicious and thick, so we're
ready to add in. This is a mixture of cornstarch and water. We are just going to slowly pour that
in while we stir. You can see that is getting nice and thick, so we're ready to ladle it into jars.
These are twin little calves. They were just born
this morning. Oh my goodness, how cute. It's always exciting when there's twins. That's not
super common with calves, but just look at that little button nose. Hey, welcome to the world.
Well, it is time to get serious in the garden. We were gone for about 10 days. It's actually
about two weeks since I've been out here, and things are... Oh my goodness. I came out here
almost immediately after we got off the motorhome after the trip, and I didn't know whether to laugh
or cry because things have grown so much, which is really exciting, but so have the weeds. There's
some plants in the garden, and I tried not to show you too much of that. It looks so sad.
Some of the vines are not looking so good again, so I think I'll need to pull some of those,
but right now my focus is the dahlia patch. This is the time of year when the dahlias kind of
explode, and as you can see, that's what they've been doing, but most of them are spent, so we're
starting to get brown specks on them, and I need to go through and pull all of them. That's the
best thing you can do for dahlias, is to keep cutting them. I've got my bucket with me here.
I'm putting in the blooms that are at least nice-ish, and then the rest of them I'm just
pulling, and that way, normally about three-ish, three, four days after you do a thorough deadheading
like this, you'll be full of beautiful blooms again. Doing this consistently throughout the
summer will give you by far the most blooms, but clearly I'm behind on that. That is what we're
going to tackle next. And this is our little reward for the job. All the beautiful flowers that we can
enjoy in the house now. Well, thank you so much for joining me. I hope you were inspired, and I
will look forward to seeing you next time. Bye, friends!
