We had low expectations and no idea what to expect on our five flight segments that would eventually land us in New York, reuniting with part of our family. Our flights had been canceled once before (back in early June) and when told by the Delta agent (after over an hour of waiting on hold on the phone) the next available flight was late August, we BEGGED for anything earlier. The earliest "next" flight was three weeks later and she suggested we fly through Seattle because it was the most consistent flight coming out of China. We just wanted to get out. We didn't care that the flight path included 5 legs and almost 60 hours of travel time.
When 10 July arrived, we didn't believe we would ever get to New York on schedule. We were expecting delays, cancellations and issues. Most of our friends had nightmare stories to share and we were ready to capture our own version on video!
If you want to see our flight experience and how Covid has changed both international and domestic travel, then sit back and enjoy this video!
NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!

Making the final packing decisions. Almost ready to walk out the door.
Almost done. Almost there. Wow. Last time.
That's it. Passing off the keys.
Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.
We are in a DD on the way to the airport. And Justin is our DD driver. He's awesome.
He is really good. Thank you Tom and Charlotte.
Thank you Tom and Charlotte. Yeah. And Allyson and Grant.
It's been a crazy whirlwind 48 hours
But we have made it to the DD. Our bags are a little more stuffed than we thought they would be.
Tonight we are headed to Shanghai and we have to do an overnight in Shanghai.
And then tomorrow morning we fly from Shanghai to Seoul and then Seoul to Seattle.
Seattle to Detroit. Detroit to Rochester.
Oh my blonde dizzy head is spinning.
Our final trip to the airport. Even if we come back, this will not be our airport anymore.
We are having fun that we are taking off from the sailing city.
Games begin. Actually they've already begun.
I love these face masks man.
It's going to be a long time that we have these on our face.
Oh yeah. Okay let's do it babe.
Yeah you can totally smell the bleach. This is like empty.
How often do you get to see fruit offered at the airport? Isn't that awesome?
How do you feel today?
So when you get a meal, instead of getting napkins, paper napkins, you get plastic.
Plastic gloves.
Single use plastic.
The gloves serve as your utensil and as your napkin.
We would never want to get messy would we?
You eat your sandwich with gloves on.
I'm ready to go western.
I love Chinese food. I can't get enough of it.
I'm having some braised beef with spicy noodles and some carrots.
First leg.
Masks are really hot.
Bye bye Jinbao.
What are you doing sweetie?
I'm loading stuff up for storage so we don't have to kill ourselves.
I've literally never seen Shanghai airport this empty.
We just want to go to bed.
We do.
But we can't turn the lights off.
Because it's too complicated.
You cut off the lights up here and then all the switches in the air conditioning cuts off.
What are you doing sweetie?
Filling this up.
This is a health decoration form right here.
Decoration?
Decoration.
We didn't get much sleep last night did we?
No, but what we got I'm so thankful for.
We landed last night at 9.40 and only got to bed at 12.30 in the morning for a series of comedic events.
So we're a little tired this morning.
Yeah, on the bus yesterday the shuttle from the airport to the hotel was a late night shuttle and some really strange things happened.
They stopped at one of the terminals for like 20 minutes.
They stopped at another spot and it's like the guy was on the roof and he came back off and then got on the bus.
And one of the Chinese guys said stop the bus.
He got off in the middle of this road and walked to I don't know where.
And then two other guys got on the bus.
They weren't even at the airport.
And then at one point the bus driver just gets out of the bus and leaves.
And here we are on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere sitting in the bus and this guy's gone for like 15 minutes.
Who knows what happened.
He starts driving the bus and we finally get home.
Some not so kosher things, maybe some bribes happened, but it was a big delay and it was really confusing.
Good explanation Susan.
So we've been asked to go to the baggage check room.
Brown's getting his bag searched.
Back at the check-in counter.
It's been about 45 minutes so far just to get through this process.
Here we go.
We made it.
There are so few people here.
I've never seen the airport like this.
It's completely empty.
Okay well that was the longest check-in process we've ever gone through.
It took like an hour and 45 minutes.
Well we're finally at the other end man.
It's like 10 checkpoints.
There's four big bags of check all the way to Rochester.
I'm really excited about that.
Okay it's boarding time and we are in the Shanghai airport and they're boarding slowly.
Everybody's got a little extra space.
It's a really different experience.
Man I'm telling you I do not want to miss this flight because the next flight out of here is like in October.
They're boarding the plane from back to front and they're doing it row by row.
Which is not the normal way but just the new protocol.
Delta's been absolutely fantastic so far.
Really amazing customer service and safety conscious.
We've run into people who've had 15 flights canceled.
It's been crazy.
We've only had one flight canceled so far our way so this is great for us.
Hi good morning.
All American flight attendants it's so exciting.
They're welcoming us on board like brothers and sisters.
Like a family reunion of the Americans.
That's right.
Everyone's so relieved to get out.
They're opening up the travel kit.
What you got in there?
Hand cleaning towel, ear plugs, and a face mask.
That's all the essentials.
I guess they're not giving pillows any longer because of COVID.
Bye bye China.
Bye China.
The middle seat emptied the whole way through the plane.
Which makes an international flight really comfortable.
Yay another floor.
I love it.
Avion we feel important here.
Thank you.
There you go.
I'll give her two.
You're not giving it until she shoots a picture down here.
Best card.
South Korea.
Number two.
This is just a quick stop over to change out the crew.
Because the American crew is not allowed into China.
So they wait here in Seoul and the Chinese crew fly in and then they swap out.
Which is why we had to make an hour long stop here.
Why don't we take a look real quick outside at South Korea.
Because that's all we're going to get is a look.
Right?
That's right.
Hello South Korea.
We're out of China.
Amazingly you got out without a valid visa.
That's even more amazing.
I cannot believe that.
So I'm getting my visa checked on the way out.
And I've outstayed my visa by seven hours.
I mean because they cancelled all the flights in Beijing.
So we had to re-book for two weeks later.
But she had to call somebody special to come over and take a look at it.
And he said let it go.
No problems.
Doing all the things I'm not supposed to do.
I'm touching my nose.
Touching my face.
Moving my mask.
Picking my boogers.
You can tell we haven't had a lot of sleep lately.
Wow this is the best plane meal I've ever had.
We're here.
And that screaming baby is glad we're here too.
He's screaming with joy.
Still screaming.
Nine hours later.
No one's following instructions.
They asked us to remain seated until the person in front of us was gone.
Welcome to America.
Bye.
Thank you.
They're really controlling how quickly people walk through here.
Okay.
There you are.
You guys can go down to customs.
Alright thanks.
Welcome to America.
The airport is a little busier than it was a little while ago.
But it's still quite empty.
So four hours to Detroit.
And then a little over an hour, I think an hour and twenty minutes to Rochester.
So we're almost there.
Really tired.
Fourth leg beginning.
Heading to Detroit from Seattle.
Who am I?
Where I am?
What year it is?
I don't know.
Once again, no one listened to the announcements.
Which was not to get up until the row in front of you was completely gone.
Very exciting moment right now.
Oh, the light show.
I love this thing.
The light and sound tunnel.
We paid extra so that we could take these.
Let's do it.
Everything's closed in the airport.
Like a ghost town.
I would say 95% of people are wearing masks.
Maybe more.
Here we go.
Final leg.
Oh, okay.
There you go.
Alright.
Thank you.
Have a good evening.
Oh yeah.
Have fun.
We are having to take anything of video out of here.
Because this plane can't hold big suitcases.
We made it.
We did make it.
Thanks be to God that we got here relatively easy.
I mean, we could make a better video if there was a whole lot more drama.
But things worked very smoothly.
Yeah, no drama.
Shoot, there was even good food on the airline.
Good service.
Every other seat was empty.
Or better.
Yeah.
The planes were empty, which was really nice.
And the airport.
So, I mean, not that bad.
Now we have to get a jet lag.
Alright.
Wow, it all made it.
