Ancient DNA found no bottleneck in the sixteen hundreds at all. Bayesian modelling of the whole radiocarbon record found resilience, not collapse. Three independent methods, same answer. What actually happened is documented and it is not ambiguous. Disease from repeated contact, then Peruvian slave raiders taking fifteen hundred people in eighteen sixty two, of whom fifteen came home carrying smallpox. By the eighteen seventies there were barely a hundred people left. And the statues walked, exactly as the oral tradition always said.
