Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe Toyota GR GT is a limited-production, rear-wheel-drive supercar featuring a twin-turbo V8 engine. Debuting at Monterey Car Week, this gas-powered halo car emphasizes track performance and lightweight construction, aiming for a top speed of 200 mph with a starting price of approximately $200,000.
Toyota is certainly no stranger to doing high-performance supercars.
Take a look at iconic vehicles like the 2000 GT, Lexus LFA, and now this vehicle.
This is the Toyota GR GT, a rear-wheel-drive twin-turbo V8-powered supercar
that will be coming sometime next year in limited numbers.
And today, I'm at the Quail here at Monterey Car Week
because we're finally getting a chance to see this new vehicle in person.
So now that we're doing so, let's go ahead and take a detailed first look.
So when Toyota first revealed the GR GT alongside the LFA concept a few months ago in Japan,
I was pretty sad that I didn't get a chance to see that vehicle in person.
As you guys know, a lot of my audience is probably big fans of all the Japanese brands,
especially when it comes to supercars.
And this vehicle, when I first saw it online,
I was really impressed with the fact that Toyota was revealing something like this
alongside, of course, an all-new version of the LFA.
But unlike the LFA that we saw around the same time, which was fully electric,
this model is a gas-powered vehicle.
And underneath that hood, which I can't open today,
you're going to find a 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor.
Toyota is targeting around 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque
going to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic
that's kind of mounted at the rear axle.
They're claiming this model should be good for around 200 miles an hour.
And I'm estimating probably a zero to 60 time
in the low to under three-second range with the launch control feature.
But it's a powertrain, of course.
It's all new for Toyota.
And it has a lot in common, of course, with other vehicles in the segment.
If you're thinking like of a Mercedes AMG GT, for example,
that has also a 4-liter twin-turbo V8.
So it's kind of cool that Toyota is doing something like this
in a vehicle that looks as menacing as this vehicle does.
Now, first of all, take a look at the exterior styling.
This silver exterior is not something I would want to show it in,
but the headlights in this car are very low and wide.
It has, of course, this projector LED.
The arrow and openings that you see here are all functional, of course.
It has kind of like this interesting black portion
where it has like a mail slot look to the front fascia,
along with some functional openings at the lower end.
The front fascia itself is actually not as aggressive as I thought it was going to be.
The hood scoop there, I'm assuming, is also functional,
along with the heat extractor vent.
But overall, you really can see how wide and how long the front hood of this vehicle is.
And that's because it has to make space for that 4-liter V8 engine,
which again, the transmission is mounted at the rear.
That's all for weight distribution,
because Toyota is basically claiming a curb weight of this vehicle
of just under 4,000 pounds.
So kind of keep that in mind.
So there's a lot of people here, as you can see at the quail.
So we're going to have to move this way, probably,
to talk about the rest of the profile.
But if you want to look at the rest of the side profile of this vehicle,
this is actually a relatively long vehicle
with a 107.4-inch wheelbase and a 189.4-inch overall length.
This is actually a lot longer than I expected.
But really, what shocks me is how low and wide the vehicle is.
I also love the wheels on this vehicle.
You can see you've got a 20-inch wheel.
It's a staggered design.
It's a 265 width at the front, a 325 width at the rear.
Of course, standard carbon ceramic brakes with the blue-painted Brembo calipers, obviously.
These are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
So they're going to give you all the necessary grip that you need for those track days.
And of course, Toyota is probably going to put some kind of adjustable adaptive suspensions.
In fact, the entire body of this vehicle is made of aluminum.
It's Toyota's first time using an aluminum structure for the actual vehicle.
But there's also a couple of things here.
I'm noticing functional heat extractor vents here.
I actually think the way this looks is really cool.
This is all designed to channel air, you know,
past the vehicle to kind of help create the aerodynamics,
but also allow the air flow to pass through into some of these other openings.
So all are going to have to do with the functional cooling.
Because of that rear-mounted translax, of course,
it needs the functional cooling with this actual air vent over here.
I am surprised that this vehicle is not all-wheel drive.
And it's also not a plug-in hybrid.
But also keep in mind, Toyota wanted this to be still more of a high-performance track car.
And they didn't want to have too much weight,
which is probably why they didn't want to make this thing a plug-in hybrid.
Looking at the rear, you can see it looks like no other Toyota or Lexus vehicle.
It has like a tapered off rear end with this kind of functional rear spoiler at the back.
It basically has simple badging.
It just says GT back here and a GR badge.
There's not a single Toyota badge on this vehicle,
which is kind of shocking how they don't have that.
You can see the exhaust system.
It's a quad outlet exhaust.
It's kind of staggered.
This is a setup that we've seen Toyota put it on some other Lexus products,
like the Lexus LFA, for example.
And then you also have some functional heat extractor vents here.
The taillights themselves have a really interesting light signature
where you have this full LED light bar.
These are the reverse lights.
These are the turn signals here.
And overall, I do think the car looks better at the front versus the rear.
But let me know in the comment section below
what you guys think of the actual exterior design.
It really has a mean presence to it.
And it definitely looks like it belongs here at the Quail
with all the other high-performance supercars.
But let's take a look at the interior
because a lot of you are probably curious to know
what something like this looks like on the inside.
Now, moving on to the interior of the Toyota GR GT.
They've asked me not to sit in this car, obviously,
because it's a very early pre-production prototype car.
But looking at this cabin,
it really doesn't look like any other Toyota vehicle that I've ever seen.
Remember, this is a halo supercar.
It's going to have a six-figure plus price tag to kind of show that.
And Toyota definitely went to Lexus here to get some of the materials.
First of all, you're going to look at the dash.
It's covered in this beautiful suede alcantara with the contrast red stitching.
It has a unique flat-bottom racing-style steering wheel, of course,
with lots of controls that you're going to find for the traction control.
For your drive mode selector, you have these metal paddle shifters.
A lot of the switchgear as well, I'm seeing,
has been lifted directly off the newer Lexus products.
In terms of technology, there's a fully digital 12.3-inch cluster here.
I don't know the size of that screen.
To me, it looks like a 12-inch display.
But it also has an interesting shape that I haven't seen before.
Technically, Lexus has a 14-inch display that we just saw in the new ES
that looks very similar to that.
You have these toggles, of course, to control the different
climate control functions, the audio functions.
This right here is the gear selector, obviously, for the 8-speed transmission.
You also have some additional actual hard buttons.
You can also raise the nose up, which is very important
when you have a really low supercar like this.
And then Toyota even managed to include a wireless phone charging pad,
although I'm surprised it's not actually like the Qi 2 wireless charging pad.
And then these seats.
These Recaro bucket seats are serious.
I mean, first of all, they're made of complete carbon fiber
in addition to having the suede Alcantara.
I'm not entirely sure if they're heated or ventilated.
Obviously not ventilated.
I don't see any kind of perforations.
But the seats themselves also appear to be manually adjustable.
But they have, obviously, the holes and cutouts
if you guys want to put a five-point racing harness.
I'm also noticing a Mark Levinson premium sound system in this vehicle.
So again, lots of features that are being taken from Lexus here.
And if you even look at the door panel materials,
the door handles appear to be lifted out of a Lexus LC500,
which is a great place to start.
It has really high-quality materials, switchgear,
even a really nice suede Alcantara on the roof panel.
So obviously, for the money that Toyota is going to be charging for this vehicle,
it's kind of good that they went to Lexus to give us an interior that feels luxurious.
But at the same time, it's still going to have most of the modern tech that you want.
And I'm really looking forward to eventually sitting in this vehicle
and hopefully driving one.
But you're going to have to wait probably until sometime late next year
because Toyota says that production of this vehicle is going to be extremely limited.
So we haven't seen a Toyota-branded supercar in the US
since the LFA was discontinued all the way back in 2012.
And I have to say, after seeing the GR GT in person,
this definitely has the kind of supercar presence that you're looking for,
especially when you're trying to spend this kind of money.
In fact, Toyota says this will be a limited availability model.
However, the biggest markets are going to be in the US and Japan
because Toyota says for the world,
they're going to build roughly 900 to 1,000 units a year.
However, the US will get about 300 of those units along with Japan.
And Toyota says that they are targeting a starting price of right around $200,000,
which is actually around $100,000 less than I was expecting it to be.
For a car that has nearly 650 horsepower, 8-speed transmission,
incredibly lightweight, supercar-like chassis, all-aluminum body, really nice interior.
Obviously, this model here, I don't have finalized pricing just yet,
but I imagine it has several options on it,
like those carbon bucket seats, for example,
the additional carbon that you could probably get on the roof.
There may even be a carbon fiber package.
This one also has carbon ceramic brakes, not entirely sure if that's standard.
But again, if you're looking to get your hands on this vehicle,
Toyota basically says you can order it starting in Q2 of next year,
and deliveries are going to begin sometime in November or December of next year.
And basically, they said the earlier models will be a 2027.
Afterwards, obviously, they're going to do a changeover to a 2028.
It's going to be available at select Lexus dealers.
They're saying around 100 Lexus dealers out of the 245 that they have across the globe.
So again, if you want to get your hand on this vehicle,
you're going to have to obviously put your name on a list
or at least have a really good connections with your local Lexus dealerships,
at least the ones that are participating.
But for a car that has 650 horsepower,
this much rarity, this much speed, this much performance for around $200,000,
I think that Toyota is going to have no problems selling this vehicle out.
But I hope you guys have enjoyed my full detailed overview on this brand new 2027 Toyota GR GT.
